TRIUMPH ThroughThe 40th YEAR 1963 COLUMBIA BIBLE COLLEGE Columbia, South Carolina These forty years the Lord thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing. (Deut. 2:7) 923 TRIUMPH Dr. Robert C. McQuilkin: Founder and President. The old chapel . PAST . . . Columbia Bible School was established in 1923 with an enrollment of eight students. Only God knew the trials and triumphs which lay ahead and His choice for its first president was a man upon whom He had long had His hand. From 1923 to 1952 Dr. Robert C. McQuilkin, through God ' s grace a man always in triumph , was the president of Columbia Bible Col- lege. He watched CBC grow through prayer into a Bi- ble College with its own campus in the heart of Co- lumbia, and he looked forward through faith to com- ing days of expansion and greater miracles than these. Dr. McQuilkin challenged the students ten years ago with this conclusion to a message on He- brews 11: Young people, go out and write a faith chapter of your own. Faculty Chapel message: Past. Present Classroom. . . . and PRESENT The present purpose for the existence of Columbia Bible College is the same purpose which prompted its establishment forty years ago: to train young people to know Him and to make Him known. CBC has developed and grown only because the Lord has en- abled its leaders to keep their eyes on this single goal. Through its interdenominational position, CBC has sought to contribute unity to the Church of Jesus Christ without compromising with or condoning any positions or beliefs which are dishonoring to Him. Since the fall of 1960, CBC has been operating on its new campus, six miles from Columbia. This year the Alumni Association took as its Thanksgiving Prayer Goal$100, 000 toward the construction of the McQuil- kin Memorial Administration building. An identical $100,000 goal for Thanksgiving, 1963, has already been set. Though many buildings which are urgently needed have not yet been constructed, that which we see so far reminds us daily that it is a miracle cam- pus, a triumphal exhibit of God ' s abundant provision. Dr. G. Allen Fleece: President New Dormitories Shortess Chapel: The Student Body TRIUMPH ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT in SPIRITUAL LIFE While desiring to maintain a high scholastic level in accordance with standard college requirements, CBC continues to recognize the paramount importance of spiritual preparation and the necessity of placing young Christians in a training environment in which they will yield to the molding of God ' s will. Accred- ited by the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges and recognized by the United States Office of Educa- tion, CBC has as the center of its curriculum the Word of God, offering at least sixteen Bible courses. To supplement the Christian ' s training, courses in edu- cation, religious education, music, missions, theol- ogy, foreign language, and many liberal arts are of- fered, with degrees of Biblical Education given. The Graduate School of Missions provides training on a graduate level leading to a degree of Master of Arts in Biblical Education or Bachelor of Divinity. Devotional Life Studying and sharing From one generation to another: TRIUMPH State fair booth: annual witness to thousands in CHRISTIAN SERVICE Christian service, engaged in weekly by every CBC student, is presently our most ob- vious way of Making Him Known. Those who are the Lord ' s long to tell others of Him, and CS assignments are designed to provide excellent opportunities for just that. Many methods and materials are used, but the mes- sage is always the same: Christ died to pardon sinners and free them from sin for a life of triumph! Open air van: training ground as well as harvest field. Colored Bible Club Freshman choir: one of many music ministries. TRIUMPH in SOCIAL and ATHLETIC In a balanced and Christ-centered social life-the polish which finishes the construction of the complete man of God - profitable, lasting friendships are made. Part of knowing Him is learning to recognize and respect Him in others; and the first step in making Him known is showing forth His love toward fellow Christians. In all that ye do in word or in deed, do all to the glory of God. This is living in TRIUMPH! Roommates i — I — | — ] — r-i — | — | — r Class Social DEVELOPMENT Close competition and keen enthusiasm character- ize CBC sports participation. Numerous sports (foot- ball, baseball, soccer, basketball, volleyball, tennis weight-lifting, and many individual sports) provide energy outlets, relaxation, and body conditioning for all. In the midst of a world of books, the athletic courts and fields aid in teaching a truth which each growing Christian must realize: The Lord for the body and the body for the Lord, that in all things He might have the pre-eminence. BRIGGS 1874 - 1962 Since August 17, 196Z, our Miss Briggs has been present with her beloved Savior. Connected with the Bible College as an extension worker since 1926, Miss Briggs gave herself to prayer, witness, and love that she might reach the lost for Christ. Her life, one of constant giving, she has thus summarized, It has been all grace, grace, grace. One who lived in triumph here now lives in the constant presence of the Triumphant One. DEDICATION Mr. Frank Sells is a man with a radiant personality, a booming voice, and an obvious love for Jesus Christ. He graduated from CBC in 1932 and from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1935. After a year in the pastorate, he returned to CBC in 1936 to teach Bible. In August, 1942, Mr. Sells, most eligible bachelor of CBC, married Miss Amanda Dosser. For 27 years Mr. Sells has preached Christ to the students, exhorting, counseling, and befriending. None of the hundreds he has taught will for- get this man who demonstrated in humble straight-forwardness the life of the wanting to do and the doing of his good pleasure. Mr. Sells, we thank God for giving you to us for these years and wait with anticipation for every future ministry the Lord may have for us through you, whether teaching or writing. Under the combined operation of men ' s and women ' s Christian Service departments, students participate in nearly thirty distinct fields of minis- try in an effort not only to trainthem- selves for future service, but in a present concentrated outreach to glorify the Lord through seeing souls accept Christ and grow in His grace. From the campus base the two directors, Miss Strauss and Mr. Petty, see students go out to take part in Bible Clubs, hospital visitation, church work, public school teaching, open air meetings, and a variety of other service opportunitites . Wheth- er in the Freshman Choir or on the Catawba Indian Reservation, CBC students continue to learn of Christ and serve Him who always leadeth us in triumph. MISS STRAUSS Director, Women ' s Christian Service Solo at Spanish Service Bible Club for children ' AM? MUSIC Ambassador Choir MUSIC DEPARTMENT: Convinced that music is essential to normal Christian life and growth, CBC offers many channels through which the Lord ' s new song can be expressed. For many years the Ambassador Choir (pictured above) has represented Jesus Christ and CBC and has held concerts all over the United States, from Vermont to Texas, from Florida to Illinois. The Freshman Choir and Spanish Choir complete the choral groups which represent the Christian Ser- vice department. Other choral groups which are assembled during the year as volunteer efforts are the Messiah Choir, and varying other seasonal cantata groups. Individual music development is stressed as a basic need in Christ- ian work today. Much opportunity, throughout the Southeast, as well as locally and on campus., is afforded for solo, instrumental, and small group music service opportunities. Trumpet Trio Ambassador Quartet MR. Steering Committee KNOW HIM AND ' O MAKE HIM Guest Speaker FMF objectives implicate each of 1) Every student recognizing and responding to the truth that every Christian has a personal responsibility in God ' s world missionary program. 2) Every student realistically facing the possibility that God wants him to serve on the ne- glected foreign fields. 3) Every student properly pre- pared, whether staying at home or going abroad, to serve God for foreign missions . Through weekly prayer groups and missionary programs, students are able to begin active participation in God ' s missionary program. The simple purpose of FMF is expressed in its motto: The Lord Jesus Christ unto the uttermost. 1.
