Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Matthew 11:28,29. Learn of My Love that is changeless amid change. Learn of My Faithfulness, my Thanksgiving Goal faithfulness. Learn of My Strength to move souls as well as earth. Learn of My Wisdom, that obeys without understanding. Learn of My Grace, that makes a desk a place not of confinement, but of communion. Learn of My Meekness, that invites you and enables you to learn of Me. U. - — Min i 11 HI II I II ipJ jf - ■:-- Shortess Chapel. 1960-61 YEAR VERSE: there they dwelt with the king for his work. I Chronicles 4:23 A morning chapel period. DEDICATION What is the meaning of true greatness? Is it one ' s being in a place where all will see and praise, where all will recognize and honor? Not so shall it be among you: but whosoever would become great among you shall be your minister; and whosoever would be first among you shall be your servant: even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. (Matt. 20:26-28, A.S.V.) Miss Dowdle and Miss Wolf have long been our ministers here at C.B.C., and it is with joy that we dedicate this yearbook to them. This year of our move to the new campus has been one of the great impossibilities for them, perhaps as much as for anyone. Yet, laboring under crowded conditions, with an unusual number of students to feed, they have faithfully and fully provided for that need which, if not met, would cause Columbia Bible College to close its doors. For all that you have done and for all that you will do in the future, dear friends, we take this opportunity to say ' thank you. ' The greatest single miracle for the opening day was the serving of the meal on time in the dining room. Miss Petty THE NEW CAMPUS We who have lived here at Columbia Bible College for the better part of the past nine months have been privileged to behold the very beginning of a brand new chapter in the history of the school, and to see an open display of the power of God. He has revealed His mighty arm to us; He has done exceeding abundantly above all that we asked or thought; He has, indeed, rewarded faith with sight! Surely the new campus is a monument to His faithfulness and a training ground for ours. And as we gaze upon His great provision, what do we see? We see three hundred and forty acres of South Carolina ' s rolling hills, complete with river, lake, pine trees, and electric power poles, altogether a botanist ' s paradise. We see a majestic gray water tower, graciously built for our use by the city of Columbia in return for the small tract of land from which it rises. We see twelve million fewer tons of hard packed earth, and in its place eight stately brick structures, a green gable-roofed edifice, and a sixteen-room bungalow boasting twelve pianos and a vibraharp. CW| ' - Water Tower. ' The House of Eleven Gables. v. c- ; We see a kitchen and dining-room which, on September 19, I960, had an unpainted floor, a scant two-weeks-old roof supported by Oregon imported beams, no cooks, no clean pots and pans, no gas, no water, and incomplete electrical fixtures. At 6:00 P.M., September 20, three hundred tired students had their first meal of the year. They were served and satisfied! We see a library in the basement of Dorm 4, which is very compact and quiet (except when there ' s a class in the adjacent Room 7, which is most of the time), and which sur- prisingly holds more than two-thirds of all the old library ' s volumes. We see the added features of an extension telephone on each dormitory floor, a lavatory in each room, and fluorescent lights on each ceiling. We see five tennis courts, two basketball courts, and two handball courts- -places where the body is schooled, even as the mind is trained in the classroom. We see the remarkable phenomenon of green grass growing out of a mixture of clay, gravel, and very little dirt. Fortunately, however, one thing failed to materialize. On September 11, 1960, the whole progress of con- struction on the campus, and consequently our coming here for the Fall semester, threatened to be stunted for weeks, perhaps even months, by the approach of a great mass of heavy rains and powerful winds, to which the Weather Bureau gave the name Hurricane Donna. Heading straight for Columbia, she unexpectedly veered from course, skirted the territory, and left us with little more than harmless showers. Work continued under the bless- ing of dry weather. Not until September 27, the day after newly laid macadam walks assured the students of keeping reasonably dry feet, did the weather break, and drench the campus with a downpour of rain. Yes, we have seen the mighty acts of God. We cannot but conclude that this is His work, not man ' s. But may it also be said of us that we have not only seen His works, in what He has done so far on our wonderful new campus, but also that we have learned of His ways. THE NEW CAMPUS I THE OLD ♦ ♦ ♦ Mills Building. Formerly a men ' s dormitory on the old campus, this stately structure was designed by Robert Mills, the first American trained architect. According to a Washington agency, it is the only building of historical significance in Columbia. GIVES WAY . . . ♦ ♦ ♦ TO THE NEW Dear Seniors: I could not wish for you any greater blessing than that of a life-long response to the gracious invita- tion of the Lord Jesus when He said, Learn of me. Our greatest joy is to see you enter into this life- long response during your student days. To the degree you have done so you have found the purpose for which God brought you to C.B.C. To the degree you continue to learn of Him you will fulfill the purpose of God for your entire life. You have realized by now the great difference between learning of Him and merely learning about Him. To learn of Him is the transforming secret. We learn of Him only as we take His yoke. He is eternally yoked to the Will of God. There you will always find Him. Take my yoke . . . learn of me . . . and ye shall find rest. In that rest, always yours. f€e G. Allen Fleece 10 ADMINISTRATION These are the chalk artists of the classroom, the toilers at desk and file, and the warriors of the secret place, all bondservants of the Lord Jesus. Through them the Spirit has breathed upon the four corners of the earth, and from them now we learn of Him. 11 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dr. T. Stanley Soltau, Chairman Mr. Paul Alderman, Jr. Mr. F. C. STUDENT Mr. Raymond Shepherd, adviser. Each student at CBC is a member of the Student Association. In the spring of each year the Association elects a president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer for the following year. These officers, and a representative from each of the Student organizations in the school, make up the Student Council. The president ' s responsibilities are three -fold: (1) to appoint chairmen of the Student Activities Committee, the Social Com- mittee, the Music Committee, the Program Committee, and other committees as the need arises; (2) to officiate at all of the business meetings of the Student Association and the Student Council and carry on all the transactions of the Association; and (3) to act as the major student representative to the faculty. The constitution of the Association gives its purpose as follows: The purpose of this association shall be to promote the fellowship and spiritual life of the students, to stimulate and direct the various activities, and to co-operate with the Board and Faculty in all that may concern the welfare of the college and service of the Lord. Dormitory Councils Music Committee ASSOCIATION Student Council Meeting 55 FOREIGN MISSIONS FELLOWSHIP Dave Fleece President Dr. Paul Culley Adviser The Lord Jesus Christ unto the Uttermost is the motto of the National Student Foreign Missions Fellowship. This organization was begun in 1936 by students who desired to obey the command of Christ and be His witnesses unto the uttermost part of the earth. Led by an increasing awareness both of the failure of the Church to fulfill Christ ' s command and of the tremendous responsibility which still lies upon all God ' s people to complete the missionary purpose of the Lord, the members of this group sought to promote missionary interest on their campuses. The organization grew, and in 1947 be- came the missionary arm of Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship. Since then it has spread to many colleges and Bible Institutes through- out America. F.M.F. at the Bible College is a local chapter of the National S.F.M.F. Through weekly Saturday night meetings and prayer groups, it endeavors to present to the students a clear picture of the needs of mission fields all over the world. By this means each student is given an opportunity to enter into God ' s missionary purpose right now, and to prepare himself further for actual missionary service. In addition to the Saturday night meetings and prayer groups, each year for the past eight years a missionary project has been adopted, in which some specific need from the field is set as a goal for the Lord to supply through our C.B.C. chapter. Each year the Lord has met the complete need and each goal has been reached. Through this, valuable lessens of prayer, faith, and giving are learned. This year ' s project is a total goal of $11,000 -$8,000 for the building of a dining room for the Caribbean Bible Center of the Latin America Mission, and $3,000 for print shop equipment for the Vocation Training Project of the North Africa Mission. 56 A Saturday Night Prayer Group The Southeastern Regional F.M.F. Conferences, held at Toccoa, Georgia, each fall and spring, are another means of presenting missionary challenge and instruction to students from schools throughout the Southeast. These Conferences also serve to show clearly that only through a yielded life can the Lord Jesus be taken unto the utter- most. Dr. T. Thomas Petty The Christian Service Department is as old as the Bible College itself. Begun in 1923 as an integral part of the training which the school was intended to offer, it has increased in size every year until now its two divisions, men ' s and women ' s, have branched out into all of the areas listed in the following pages. Under the capable direction of Rev. Thomas Petty and Miss Dorothy Strauss, the department ' s main objective is to get classroom learning out of the theoretical and into the practical. To this end each student is given at least one assignment a week, for which he is personally responsible in preparation and in actual performance. Thus, every student is given an opportunity to put into practice the part of the school ' s motto which says: ... to make Him known. The students are urged to use the material they receive in classes for this purpose. The Women ' s Christian Service Department has a rotation method which enables each girl, insofar as possible, to have experience in each of the various types of service opportunities available. Both departments also have Christian service practicum groups in which students with the same type of assignment meet with their director in order to discuss the solutions to specific problems encountered in their assignments. Also, in these groups are taught general principles which will enable every student to be better equipped to fulfill his Christian Service responsi- bilities. Thus, the department has been used of the Lord in a two-fold ministry: the training of young men and women for full-time Christian work in the future and the reaching of many lost souls with the message of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. They meet bi-weekly in their own club room, room nine on the old campus, which they themselves have renovated. Under the direction of Mrs. Frizelle Hill, their beloved adviser, programs are presented which help to instruct them in the effec- tive organizing of Christian homes and in the importance of their own lives in relation to their husbands and children. The programs also include in- teresting features relating to the history and present life of the Bible Col- lege and serve, altogether, to provide for the wives ' amusement, teaching, and many challenges. Mrs. Hill Adviser 61 MUSIC DEPARTMENT - , Miss Charlotte Watson, Mr. William Supplee, Mr. Newell Ferris, and Mr. William Hoyt. The Music Department at the Bible College is unique in this respect: its purpose is not to give specialized training to a few greatly talented students, but rather to ground every student in the funda- mentals of music, and then to offer additional and more specialized training to those who desire it. To this end every student in the Bible College is required to have four credit hours of basic music theory, or its equivalent, for graduation. Beyond this, such courses as song leading, choral conducting, music appreciation, harmony, and hymnology are offered. A special music course is also available for gradu- ate students. In addition to the formal classes of instruction, most of which are taught by Mr. G. William Supplee, the Director of the Department, the students are urged to take advantage of available private vocal and instrumental instruction. Mr. William Hoyt teaches hymnology, song leading and private voice and works with small vocal ensembles; Miss Charlotte Watson teaches private piano; organ lessons are taught by Mr. Newell Ferris; and lessons in brass instruments and guitar are given by Mr. Romeyn Westervelt and Miss Lydia Heim, respectively. In all of the courses an attempt is made to adapt the instruction to the specific needs of Christian workers, so that, after the student has been trained by the Music Department, his talents, individually or in an ensemble, may be used very practically in Christian Service assignments. Thus the department plays a very integral part in the whole of the Bible College training. 62 1 1 WELCOME, MR. Members are carefully selected from each of the various classes at the beginning of each school year. The sixty -six -voice mixed choir is under the leadership of Mr. G. William Supplee, Di- rector of Music, and is accompanied at the piano by Miss Charlotte Watson. Each year the choir travels in many parts of the country represent- ing the Lord Jesus Christ and the school. At Christmas time the choir traveled nearly two-thousand miles, singing twenty-three concerts in North Carolina, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan. Dur- ing the month of June, the choir will conduct a tour through the New England area and Canada. The purpose of the choir is to sing for the glory of God. In this one word is found a summary of all that God is and of all that characterizes God in His dealings with men. As the choir sings it is their prayer that God might be glorified in the lives of those that hear the Words of Life. Choir Cabinet M W HNKNO.
