Property of Alumni Ministries Please do not remove. T fci tcon. ( ia 4 Pne tt ecUc itcoH Other schools have classes and bells and books and teachers, but no other school has Buck Hatch! He is a very special and beloved possession of Co- lumbia Bible College. The Rev. James M. Hatch came to the faculty of Columbia Bible College in the fall of 1947 having just received his Master of Arts degree at the Uni- versity of Chicago with a double major-psychology and social studies. If ques- tioned as to why he added social studies he would probably explain that his field of learning was so narrow - he knew nothing about everything, and that would be a typical Hatch remark. He would not mention that this was a difficult un- dertaking. Previously Mr. Hatch had graduated from Duke University where he had been a Pre-Med student, for he had planned to be a doctor. Then one night in his senior year he came to the end of himself and found the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. That changed everything for him then and forever. He entered CBC as a graduate student in 1936 and three years later re- ceived his Master of Theology. But that was not the most important thing that he received, for here he learned a secret of life, which he would ever after be sharing with others. He learned that Christ did not simply save him and leave him alone, but that He came to dwell within the trusting obedient heart in or- der that He might live out His life through him. He had been limping along in defeat but the moment he saw the truth of an indwelling Christ, he testified that he threw away his crutches and walked! Shortly after finishing his work at the Bible College he was married to a high school sweetheart and took a pastorate of four small churches in Mississ- ippi, where he remained for five years. Here his first two sons were born. Later a third and fourth were born to complete the male quartet. At CBC he has taught Anthropology, Educational Psychology, General and Advanced Psychology, Hermeneutics , Christ in the Old Testament, Prophets, and Epistles. During most of his years in Columbia he has held a pastorate as well. He has been the beloved advisor to more than one class and more and more he has given his time to the counselling of students. Because of his high regard for the married estate he has become the Marryin ' Sam of the Bible College. Somehow lovers feel more secure when Mr. Hatch has tied the knot. When the Junior Class of 1954 chose for the theme of their yearbook, Abid- ing in Christ, they decided that if thatwasthe theme of anyone ' s life and preaching it was of Mr. Hatch, their advisor. They can hear him yet leading their class prayer meeting with the chorus he had adapted: If you want joy, real joy, wonderful joy Let Jesus abide in your heart. And so because of his sweetness, his humilty, his counsel, his love, his scholar ship, his simplicity, his shyness, his diagrams, his grin, his message of exalting Christ we lovingly dedicate this book to BUCK HATCH! occi TtecfA ' P te cCcHt Dear Seniors : These years of association with you here at the Bible College have been a happy experience for many reasons, but above all others is the fact that you have been here in the will of God and for the will of God. In comparison to every other basis of association, this one alone is the secret of fellowship that is real and meaningful. To be in the perfect will of the Lord, and to be train- ing for whatever future service is in the will of the Lord — this has been the blessed opportunity that has been yours at Bible Col- lege. To be in the perfect will of the Lord, and to have some part in training you for the service of the Lord — this has been my joyous privilege these years. And now our Bible College association has come to an end, but not our fellowship. This will abide, regardless of where we are in coming years, so long as we individually abide in the Vine, and in His will. John 15 : 5 is a glorious theme for the Finial. It points back to the central truth that you have learned at CBC; and it points ahead, reminding you of the Lord ' s secret for all that is involved in your future life and service. Jesus never fails — abide in Him. Hudson Taylor gave us the heart of this verse when he said, In all your work for Jesus, be sure that you work with Jesus. The Bible College without Jesus would be nothing; Jesus without the Bible College is still everything. Yours in His sufficiency. Jjo- - . 1 atH t tnu e Odette. cLttcC h ' pat c t G. Tlecu €UPtfiu Site The 300 acres of rolling land is on the edge of Colum- bia, extending from highway 215 to the Broad River. One of the highest sections of the land overlooks the restful river and presents a breathless view. The smooth lake , surrounded by woods which is controlled by a dam and spillway , adds to the grandeur of the property and affords a wonderful place for prayer and meditation. You would have to see the property for yourself to fully appreciate the beauty and potentiality of this God-given tract of land. The map at the left, pre- pared by Bob Gray, shows the property (dotted area within circle) and its relationship to the city of Columbia and high- ways passing through Colum- bia. She was a quiet, unassuming woman, with sterling Christian qualities and many lives were saddened by her leaving. «c THe KO UcuH ' Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord works do follow them. their Rev. 14:13 MRS. GUY TARRANT Although unknown to most of the students, Mrs. Guy Tarrant ' s life has been invaluable in the work of the Bible College. She went to be with the Lord on October 21, 1953, after sixty full years of living for Jesus . She was a member of the small prayer group of devoted women, who, with Dr. McQuilken, were the human instruments in the founding of C.B.C. She served as a member of the Board of C.B.C. from its beginning. She was active also in the leadership of Ben Lippen School and Conference, serving as hostess at the conference for a number of years. She gave much to all three institutions in time and prayer support. By faith they would commit themselves to buy a plane for pioneer work in New Guinea at a cost of $5,000. The order for the plane must be given by April 8. Impetus behind this unusual un- dertaking was the martyrdom of two CBC missionaries, Walter Erikson and Ed Tritt earlier that fall. Students had been shocked by the news and stirred to action. Not all could take their places, but all could give to the further- ing of the gospel in that land. PRESIDENT Harry Goldmann VICE-PRESIDENT Chandapilla SECRETARY Ruth Donadon TREASURER Bonnie Johnson ADVISER Dr. Paul CuUey Students were joined by the fac- ulty in earnest believing prayer. There was much searching of hearts to see what the Lord want- ed each one to do. The sacrifi- cial work and prayer and giving was crowned by success, for on April 8, not only was the money for the plane in hand but an add- itional $Z,000 had been given to provide the plane with floats. Right now CBC ' s Memorial plane is flying missionaries and sup- plies into the dark interior of New Guinea in order that men there may also hear the Gospel. 41 G Mailing Men ' s Christian Service Dean of Women f? i . n Hostess M M Dean of Men Mr. Eugene Lye, Instructor c iJJ | 4ii«Lj : I need Thy presence ev ' ry passing hour, what but Thy Ambassador Choir 4 rf- frcfrr f r i jii Iff I f If i if i TfCu c Mr. William Supplee, Music Director race can foil the temptei ' ,% ... wer? Mr. Herbert Eidson ADVISOR Mr. Hehl ' t en i ifi ou ' ( TtotccecC that our Finial is a bit smaller this year than in previous years and that there is a mysterious absence of ads in the rear section. We felt sure that you would like to know why. Gathering ads in the past has been a most laborious job and, even though other colleges do use this method for financing their annuals , we felt that it was bordering on soliciting , which is against our Bible College policy. Could we trust God to show us another way? We found that by cutting down here and there we could have a nice Finial and still not have to use an Ad section. Do you like the change as much as we do?
