Property of Alximni Ministries Please do not remove. THE JUNIOR CLASS PRESENTS THE 7 4 mutual o ' P cf e COLUMBIA BIBLE COLLEGE COLUMBIA. SOUTH CAROLINA But thanks be unto God. who always leadeth us in triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest through us the savor of His knowledge in every place. Corinthians 2:14 ( ul-GMC). . . . the signature and the signature verse, the man and the man ' s message; these are inseparable. We have had the pri ilege of knowing in our lifetune a five-crown Christian . . . one to whom to live w as Christ. All of his abilities and virtues were most perfecth balanced and blended together to make him a prince among men. ' It is to him and to his faithful companion that we dedicate this book. The young missionar and his wife saw God close the door to the foreign fields when the boat on which the were scheduled to sail sank in the ew York harbor. God was soon to reveal that He had a different plan for making manifest through (them) the sa or of His knowledge in every place. Like Jesus. Dr. McQuilkin began training others for the work of God; and through them the good news of Salvation and ictory is reaching every continent of the sphere. Think of those davs when he taught us. There was a big smile on his face as he entered the classroom. We joined him as he began singing Sin Shall . ot Have Dominion Over ou. And for fift -one minutes we listened as he expounded to us the message of ictorv in Romans 6. How our hearts were thrilled to hear him sav. Oh. young people, don ' t you get the reality of this truth? How greatly enriched will be our lives of ser ice and devotion because we have recei ed the message of the indwelling Christ from our father in the faith . . . Christ liveth in me. Christ liveth in me. Oh. what a salvation this. That Christ liveth in me. ' ' In future decades we shall be able to see that yesterday, today, and forever his message of perpetual jo ' in victory is the same — YIELD and TRUST. To those who are continuing this vork of faith, the promise is. AS I was with Moses, SO I will be with thee. ' Dr. McQuilkin was always looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ. One day in the consumma- tion of time and the manifestation of this faith, Mrs. McQuilkin and her five children will be reunited with one whose love they shared; and we will rejoice to bow with them before the Throne and give glory to the Lamb of Redemption and ictory forever and ever! It was a man of faith who founded Columbia Bible College. For a quarter of a century. Dr. McQuilkin trusted God each month for all the allowances of the Bible College. During that time he saw an evening Bible class, which met in a hotel room, grow into a Bible College of 400 students and a million dollar campus. Faith, mighty faith, the promise sees And looks to God alone; Laughs at impossibilities And cries, ' It shall be done! ' On October 1, 1943, a definite goal of faith was reached when the last payment on the men ' s campus was made. Then again on Thanksgiving Day, 1950, upon the announcement that the remainder of the $250,000 needed for the new dormitory building had been supplied, the Bible College auditorium was swelled with the praises of the Bible Col- lege family as they sang forth the glad proclamation. (Hebrews 12:2 I, our class year verse, was kept in niind in all of our class gatherings. We had a great expectation from Him as we left on Senior Day, with hearts gladdened by the verse given to us by the Junior class: The path of the righteous is as the dawning light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day (Proverbs 4:18). In our times of fun and feasting together, in our periods of personal meditation, and in the closing testimony service, the Lord met us in a very new way. The welcome song sung by the Juniors on our return added to the warmth of our hearts: Humas agapomen be our words, too. And may His constant blessing be on you; For here is wondrous victory — Victory in Christ our Lord. It is hard to leave the school and the people whom we love very much. We are unable to express fully the deep appreciation that we have for the faculty, staff, board, and fellow students of our beloved Alma Mater for all that they have meant to us. ' ce uxnA We have known the presence of the Lord tliis year in an even greater way than ever before. It was our first social of the year. Several had led in the closing prayer of our devotional period when suddenly a new realization of the greatness of the Lord ' s grace shined upon us. An unexpected revival brought conviction of sin to our hearts, prayers of confession to our lips, and tears of sorrow and rejoicing to our eyes. The love and joy that was experienced that night became ours for the whole year. His strength was ours as we carried out the responsibilities of the Finial and the Junior-Senior Banquet. The unity He gave us sparkled as we sneaked along the trail of the Seniors; and the praver days and class-meetings became new turning points in our lives. But still we are confident that the best year is yet to be expe- rienced. ' Mv soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him (Psalm 62:5). Mr. Wenzel Class Adviser Keep looking up! That ' s the way we felt, as we reviewed our first year of Bible College. How wonderful it was to see how the Lord had met us and taught us so nianv things! Some of the lessons had been learned ' ' the hard way. but all were precious to our hearts as were the memories of learning together. Our class project has been a monthly prayer letter to the twent fellow students who did not return to our class this year. The Lord las abundantly rewarded us with encouraging answers from them elling of God ' s blessing. We prayed for these students each week, bringing their requests ' with joy before the Lord and rejoicing in the knowledge that they were doing the same for us. We praise the Lord for the revival He has brought into our own hearts, for wonderful fruitfulness in Christian service, for the faith- fulness of our class officers and for the priceless guidance of our class advisor. We look forward with expectant hearts to two more glorious years here of being led in triumph by Christ. Hardly had classes commenced before we all began to realize afresh the enormity of the task before us: that of mastering the Word of God and coming to a clear inte- grated view of the Christian Revelation in this year within the Atomic Age. As we attended chapel and participated in our special grad retreats, we began to apprehend the glorious Life of Victory that our Lord has purposed us to live. Fun at grad retreat. Dave Thomas Vice-President Marjorie Loomis Treasurer Sc iooC The horizons of our outlook on Christian Service were broadened, not only through our individual assignments in and around Columbia, but also through seeking to labor on behalf of the needy souls living at the Aiken trailer camps and the Catawba Indian Reservation. How often we were quickened to serve more effectively through using more faithfully the weapon of all power. This year has truly been a year of vision. The Lord, in His infinite wisdom, saw fit to take him to heaven. He drowned at Gull Lake. Michigan, on July 13. 1952. May the homegoing of this friend challenge us to redeem every moment of our short lives. Psalm 116:15 In September of 1952, Walter Erikson, a graduate of the Columbia Bible College, and Edward Tritt, a former student, jour- neyed into the interior of Netherlands New Guinea to lay the plans for future missionary work among the unreached tribal peoples. They did not know then that they were to be the first martyrs in the history of the Bible College. On November 10, 1952, a cable from the governor of Nether- lands New Guinea bore the news: Deeply regret announced death by violence of mis- sionaries Erikson and Tritt. Mutilated bodies found 17 October in river Ainim near village Maoepas ... To what purpose is this waste? Hear the answer from the mar- tyrs ' graves: ... for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but refuse, that I may gain Christ. Two grains of wheat have died! And through many newly challenged lives, they will bring forth much fruit. Walter Erikson Edward Tritt 44 45 Katherine Erikson, Sec. Virginia Foley, Treas. Having the earnest desire to make the Lord Jesus Christ known to all the world, the students of CB.C. join together each Saturday evening to quicken their missionary interest through considering the needs of the regions beyond. Following these regular missionary pro- grams, the students divide into small groups to intercede for the particular needs of the vari- ous fields, and on behalf of the almost 400 CB.C. alumni who have gone to the foreign field. The national organization of F.M.F. was organized in 1937 by college students meeting at Ben Lippen Conference and at Keswick Conference. Students at CB.C. had an important part in initiating this movement, and the F.M.F. chapter at CB.C has made a substantial contribution both to the cause of missions on our campus and to the growth and influence of the national organization. Barbara Boyer. Secretary Marilyn Jones, Treasurer 48 Sam Brown, Regional Chairman Irene Payne, Regional Secretary In 1950 this organization joined the lnter- arsitv Christian Fellowship and toda is the foreign missionary arm of this aggressive student organization on the campuses of Amer- ica ' s schools. Membership in the F.M.F. is twofold. There are active members who purpose to go to the foreign mission field, believing it to be God ' s will for their lives: and there are associate members who are burdened for missions, but who are still seeking specific guidance relati e to their future service. The name Philo- biblonian means lo er of books; and the purpose of the society was to introd uce the members to the great masters in literature, to acquaint them with the art of public speaking, and to school them in parliamen- tary procedure. Exactly twenty years later, in 1952. the Philo- biblonian Society stepped down and the Phi Alpha Society took its place. The fall semester found the CeBeCean facing a critical period in its history, that of being shelved for a time. And, as in the Christian life the Lord begins to work only after the individual is willing to be nothing, so in the work of the CeBeCean much prayer and planning were given to the problem, and from this evolved a complete face-lifting for the paper. Not only was the original layout changed, but there was an earnest desire to have the content such that it would meet the highest standards of the Bible College. The continual growth of the Bible College is reflected in the growth of its annual. From t he small, 43-page, paper-backed edition of 1939. the Finial has grown to the present large, 108-page book with a stiff -back, embossed cover. However, its purpose is still the same — to present a permanent pictorial record of the activities and student life of Columbia Bible College. This year we, as the Finial staff, have learned what it is to constantly look to God for wisdom, strength, and guidance. We trust that this book of memories of the school year 1952-53 will be the means of pointing many to God and Heaven and Light. Coaching the ad salesmen Our messenger boys Dorothy Gibbs. Secretary; Paul Gilchrist, Vice- President; Bill Selkirk, President. Sometimes the life of a missionary depends upon sending a message to a doctor or nurse quickly. If simple radio communication is available, days and weeks of waiting for a message can be saved. In 1949, when they realized this, thirteen people, including Dr. Culley, Mr. Fetner, five girls and six fellows, met together to form the first Radio Club of C.B.C. They drew up a constitution and applied to the F.C.C. for a station license. The F.C.C. issued a license with the station call letters W4PKD. In order to operate this ham station, one must have an amateur license. To obtain a license one must know enough theory and have enough practice to enable him to construct and operate his own sta- tion and must have the ability to send the Interna- tional Morse Code at a rate of thirteen words per minute. This knowledge and practice is offered to Bible College students in a class on Radio Com- munications. At present there are two active licensed operators of W4PKD, and two persons with license pending, and transmitters that operate on two of the amateur bands. Construction has been started on transmitters to operate on two other bands. Under the right at- mospheric conditions, especially with the new an- tennae atop the new dormitory building, this short- wave equipment is able to reach any place in the world.
