Sponsored by the Junior Class of 1939 (Dedication It is the desire of the Class of 1940 to honor those who are going before them, to acknowledge the Christian standard they have maintained, and to commemorate the bond of love which exists between them. McQuilikin c Uhe (President ' s Greeting to His Graduates You have a real distinction in being the first graduating class to appear in The Finial. The significance of that name suggests the mes- sage I should like to leave with you. All of your teachers, in a measure, would enter into Paul ' s desire expressed in Colossians 1:28, Whom we proclaim, admonishing every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ. How glorious it is to know that Christ has a plan for each of your lives. He will perfect that which concerneth you. For the present, your great heritage is Christ in you, the hope of glory (Col. 1 : 27), the hope of being conformed to thfe image of Christ. My prayer for you is that your aim may ever be to lay hold of that for which Christ has laid hold of you. One other word. You were not linked with one another in the Bible College fellowship as a temporary thing. You will be strengthened, and you will strengthen others, if you continue to share in the life and labors of each other and in the united testimony of Columbia Bible Col- lege with its purpose To Know Him and to Make Him Known. Kunath = ftmat c Uhe Finial High above the sidewalks of Hampton Street, crowning each of the twin towers of Columbia Bible College, are the bud- like finials which inspired the name of this volume. Being familiar and unique to the daily passerby as they stand out boldly with Heaven as a background, they symbolize the work and testimony ' of our Alma Mater which, like a finial, lifts the observing eye and holds it for more than a casual glance. The finial, as a crowning adornment, was thought an appropriate symbol for such a volume as this is meant to be. Gathering under one cover the pictorial memoirs of the school year and preserving .them perhaps for decades beyond the hasty scrutiny of commencement days, it will, in the esteem of every Bible College alumnus, have earned its title, The Finial. Rom. 15:20 (Graduated in January, 1939) TO KNOW ■HIM= 16 Farewell The Lord shall be thy confidence. It is with confidence placed in our all-powerful Lord that this Class of ' 39 embarks from Columbia Bible College to be strong and do ex- ploits. Four years of preparation here at school have opened our eyes to one essential: that we must now, if never before, lift anchor and as individuals move under His Power. As we leave our Alma Mater we recall many things for which we may give thanks. Chief among these is an experience of the purpose expressed in the school motto, To Know Him and to Make Him Known. We have seen a vision of The Seven Hundred Million who have never rightly heard the Gospel. And how shall they hear unless we first hear the command to go and exercise the privilege of carrying it out? As we go, He goes before, and it is of His grace that we have our confidence in Him. To us as members of the Bible College family, farewell means at most only a temporary separation, and not that in spirit. We shall always be united in our prayers. We go forward knowing our great responsibility in remembering one another before the Throne of Grace. We are confident that we too shall be so remembered, and together we place our confidence in the Lord. The Class of ' 39 SENIOR CLASS POEM Lord, make us soldiers — give us Fortitude. For us the fight allows no interlude. For us are weapons, armor, life, renewed. O Lord our Confidence now make us strong; O Lord our Confidence give us a song — A song the whole world hears Before the Sun appears. Lord make us soldiers — as the foe is met. For us thru flame and flood the march is set. For us the journey holds no stark regret. The Lord our Confidence will make us strong; The Lord our Confidence will give His song, Before the battle clears, Until the Sun appears. Lord make us soldiers — shunning not the Hard. For us are wounds — we shall not win unscarred. For us no Death can leave our spirits marred. The Lord our Confidence doth make us strong; The Lord our Confidence doth give the song, Unmuffled by our fears Until the Sun appears. Lord make us soldiers — as the crisis grows For us the Captain ' s final signal blows. For us is Dawn — the Eastern heaven glows! The Lord our Confidence has made us strong; The Lord our Confidence fulfilled the song, E ' en while the Morning nears, And as the Sun appears. — Sanna M. League of Evangelical Students ERNEST LUBKEMANN, president RUTH RICHARDSON, vice-president FRANCIS FLURER, treasurer DOROTHY TIDD, secretary (not in picture) The League of Evangelical Students is a national organization with over fifty active chapters in the colleges and universities of the United States. Its purpose is to establish an evangelical testimony in a college world which is so permeated with anti-Christian teaching. The Co- lumbia Bible College branch aims to support the national organization in prayer, in deputation work, and in other ways. m TO-KNOW-HIM= 32 Student Foreign Missions Fellowship LEWIS BATES, president EPPIE ADAMS, secretary DEMING GEROW, vice-president In the fall of 1936 the Student Association affiliated itself with the then newly-formed national organization of the Student Foreign Mis- sions Fellowship, forming a local chapter. At the present time it is one of fourteen such chapters in the United States. This, its third and greatest year, finds the local chapter with 85 members, each of whom are preparing definitely for foreign missionary service. The purpose of this organization is three-fold: to promote the mis- sionary interest on the campus; to study and pray concerning the needs and work on the mission fields of the world; and to present the mission- ary message to churches and colleges in the vicinity. 33 - Toy.ut ■V ' V« ' .
