P R i N C M ' E P s A s L A .S G E You have launched out on the voyage of life. So far, the ports have not been many, but you have begun to know the feel of the helm that guides your ship. Occasionally, there have been rough waters, but that has only prepared you for the journey still ahead. Desire gives momentum to the ship of life and without a rudder or pilot you could barge along with the multitudes until you become a wreck upon some blunder in life. But you are given a conscience that will guide you past the shoals and rocks into that Hnal haven of safety. 'Tix flu' sw' of flu' soul Tlnaf zfm'irl1'x YOUR goal A1141 :mf flu' mlm or the sfrifvf' Seniors, you have set out from another port, looking forward to your life's work. May your goal ever be, to anchor in heaven. As the voyage through life proceeds, find joy in service to your fellow men, and don't forget that the Hnal port can only be reached by being piloted by the Master Mariner. A. R. TUCKER, Principal. D E D I C 2341... , A ' T' f' ,ga-we-f-'iwh QL W' T A I O N To our mothers .md fathers who have saeriiiced for us that we may attend n Christian sehoolg who have deprived themselves that We might have the privileges that were never afforded them at our ageg and who have made it possible for us to come in contact with the higher ideals of life, we dedicate this annual of 1958. It is only a small acknowledgment of our appreciation for all that they have done. Mere words can never express our gratitude for the great debt we owe them. Our chance for sueeess fell heavily upon them during the tender years of our life, and now, they have more than fulfilled their duty. Their part is done, and the long years of loving care are past, but Within each of our hearts is a shrine wherein we keep the emblem of our parents' love enshrined. Throughout the years to eome, all that we are, or ever hope to be, We owe to those dearest to us-OUR PARENTS. Tx x. More fun! More work! About two hours in the morning is taken up in greeting the happy OJ faces of the students who have unexcused absences. The hour before mail goes out is spent in writing letters that just have to go in the ten-thirty mail. So-up until chapel time every one is kept plenty busy. After dinner there are the absences, letters, bakery slips, time slips, labor and cash books, and personal charges to be written up, and a dozen and one other things to do. Yes, it is work, but what is the difference? It really is fun! ANNIE SMITH. K O V I K L L L U A B C A D R I P E E M A M I y C I I I T I . A Kovilla Klub Yes, the Kevilla Klub is one of the best organized clubs at Columbia, and this year it was under the direction of our president, Eldon Zirkleg vice president, Doris Stearnsq CI.u'nmne Belongin, SCCl'CI.ll'y-ll'CLISUI'Cl'Q and Francis Dahl, assistant secretary- treasurer. Every other Monday evening we meet in the chapel of our new administration building for .1 varied program of music, readings, .ind games. During the p.ist year we have Ind many good times together that we will remember for years to come. One of the happiest memories will be the Hard Time party when we entertained the Amieitia and the Carpe Diem clubs. Games were played, a program rendered. and refreshments served. Wheim you come to Columbia next yC.lI', if you want to belong to the liveliest, and most friendly club in the school. then join us, the Kovillas. I'IAZIfl. XVATERS. Carpe Diem Club The Carpe Diem, or the girls' dormitory club of Columbia, has been organized to promote good fellowship, friendship, culture, and refinement among the girls. Each Tuesday evening, following devotional services, the club is called to order by the president. First, business is discussed, plans for social affairs submitted, and then, an interesting program or entertainment completes the hour. Some of the club's out-door activities will long be remembered,-especially the treasure hunt, where, at the end of the trail, we were rewarded with refreshments and a marshmallow roast. One of the most important activities of this year was the Carpe Diem program presented to the village. The money obtained was used to improve the girls' parlor. Put your talents in a suit case, come join us, and enjoy the good times We are planning for next year. BETTY HUBBARD. -G++ Amicitia Club Every student of the boys' dormitory is a member of the Amicitia club. The president and his staff plan a program for every Tuesday evening. Among its many activities is the entertaining of the Carpe Diem Club, waffle feeds, and early morning breakfasts. Each evening after supper the boys put aside the cares of the day and gather in the parlor for worship. Here under the guidance of Mr. Hempel, the preceptor, they turn their thoughts to higher idealsg for the greatest purpose of dormitory life is to strengthen the Christian character of the young men who are soon to become leaders at home and in the mission Fields. You really should plan to be here next year and enjoy the Christian fellowship and good times while obtaining your education. JOHN DILLON. GR ADE SCHOOL Slmlmzf Iimly Ph M. v. ow.-.Vi-t Pi K. Each enrolled student is a member of the A. S. C. A. and is encouraged to participate in its many and varied extra-curricular functions. I-Iere's a hearty welcome to join us next year! FORREST BIGGER. A. S. C. A. Presiderzl, '58-'.59. M. V. SOCIETY Every Sabbath afternoon at three-thirty you will see a happy group of young people going to the Chapel for one of the most inspirational services of the week, the Missionary Volunteer Society meeting. The object of these meetings is to give oppor- tunity for each student to become a leader in spiritual work. ALICE SLADE. MINISTERIAL AND PRAYER BAND The ministerial and prayer bands have a very definite part in the religious life of the school. The prayer bands meet on Wednesdays and the ministerial band meets Friday evenings. Every Sabbath our members assist with the services at the various churches in this district, thus they receive valuable training. MARLOWE SCHAFFNER. K I T C H E N D I N R I O N O G M THIZ KITCHEN The kitchen is very important to all of us at Columbia. Besides the good meals we enjoy three times a day, it provides work for most of the girls. Mrs. Hempel, our matron, is full of fun and we have many good times during our work period. We're always busy, but visit us some time!! ELLEN THONIAS. ooo I DINING ROOM w I1CI1 we come to Columbia our first thought is the dining room. This is .1 cheery room with its many tables where we enjoy tasty, wholesome meals served in good old family-style. Here, too, is where we enjoy many pleasing social contacts, and learn table etiquette. VIVIAN SUNIJERLAND. 440 BAKERY The Academy Bakery is a center of lively interest four days each week when breads and pastries are prepared for various places of distribution. There are three bakery routes. This gives opportunity for several boys to work considerable of their way through school, as well as an opportunity to learn a trade and receive credit for .1 vocation.
