The win against Marina allowed Colton to go to Anahiem Stadium to play St. Paul for the 4-A Champion- ship. Two of the smallest schools In the 4-A division played for the honors. St. Paul won the battle in front of over 29,000 spectators. If anything, Colton 1981-82 foot- ball proved that a small team from a not so much publlzed league, can be good enough to make to the cham- pionship game. With nineteen years of teaching history and government and eight years of counseling behind him, Sheldahl feels that his years at Col- ton High were very rewarding. Satisfaction, the feeling of ac- complishing something, and work- ing with young people have been some of the rewards, said Shel- dahl. While attending U.S.C, Sheldahl attained a B.A., and M.A. in political science. Sheldahl tried sales for a while, but then turned his atten- tions to teaching for which many are grateful. He then switched to counseling where he fulfilled his goal by working and guiding stu- dents through their education. I ' d like to retire while still in good health, said Sheldahl. I want to keep busy, but not be tied down from 8 to 5. - f . uqua uring the year, Mrs. Jen- ice Fuqua left her post as Official Records and Data Processing Clerk and moved to the Last Frontier. In other words Anchor- age, Alaska was her destination. Be fore she left, Mrs. Fuqua ex- pressed her thoughts and exper- iences with working at Colton High for over five years. I really enjoyed working with the kids, said Fuqua. I hope I find a similar job in Alas- ka. Fuqua foresaw that the big move to Alaska will be a very new and challenging experience. 185 Campus Services Pete Castro Custodian Tom Leon Jesus Evangelista Dean Myers Charles Sleckman Sal Torres Security Security Head Custodian Custodian Groundsman Wanda Barnes Bus Driver Amparo Campa Bus Driver Pam Davison Vickie Dean Mildred Dickenson Connie Duron Bus Driver Bus Driver Bus Driver Bus Driver Alice Gonzales Bus Driver Amos Kent Carmen Lozolla Liz Mann Trans. A real brain who runs from class to class to be sure not to get a tardy slip. Since all rules are meant to be broken, Kenny Chavez shatters the clear-cut im- age portrayed by a valedictorian. Always a sharp contemporary dresser and clean- cut, the 1982 valedicitorian discloses I may carry around a lot of books: yet I ' m not a bookworm, I Just don ' t use my lock- er. I don ' t even like science or mathemat- ics, but I can still get A ' s because I force myself to do well. I don ' t consider myself the smartest person in this school, I Just have better grades. Since grammar school, his mother was always telling him he was going to be valedictorian. His parents stressed grades over sports and other activities. It ' s more important now because it opens more doors after you finish high school. When I was a little kid I ' d hear stories about going to college: You ' d get a free ride, you didn ' t need money, and you ' d be successful. It isn ' t as easy as that, as he ' s found. Especially in such prominent universities as Harvard. UC Davis. Stanford. Notre Dame, and UCR. all of which he ' s applied to. His preference Is Stanford University In r orthern California. He plans to major in political science or public service if he on to a UC system. Philosophizing on life, the honor stu- dent suggests to experience life, to live for noe. while also preparing for the fu- ture. Seniorities, that dreaded social dis- ease, sometimes has taken its toll on Cha- vez. He admitted while pondering, Sometimes I lay in bed thinking about the four more years of schooling and harder work. However, he faithfully grinded, and earned his 4.0 grade point average.(GPA). Not only did he accumulate a perfect GPA. but actively participated in various extra-curricular activities which include cross country, track. Citizenship Commit- tee, ASB Council. California Scholarship Federation, and Pepper Bough Co-Editor. Additionally, Chavez amassed a num- ber of awards and honors: September 1982 student of the month. Liberal Arts plaque winner in the Bank of America Contest, National Society of Distin- guished High School Students, Honor roll, and student winner in many write-off. Journalism, speech and essay competi- tions. Designating Journalism as his best sub- ject in high school: The Pepper Bough Co- Editor modestly revealed. I like to be recognized for my effort in things such as competitions, but not draw attention to myself. If there is ever time to spare in a vale- dictorian ' s life, it is time spent reading. Relating a portion of his inner self, the compassionate young man divulged. I like to read books about people who over- come misfortunes, people who rise from being poor or handicapped. I like the hero not to be big and macho, but to be human . to have faults — someone I can relate to. With a possible twist. Chavez himself has hopes of becoming his own hero, in a sense. I think I could do better for my- self. He has set some high goals to ac- complish in the future: go to a prestigious four-year college, go to a prestigious law school, and become rich. Why so determined to be rich? I want to be successful: the (money and success) go hand in hand. Unfortu- nately in this society, it measures a man ' s success in dollars and cents. Competing with ones peers ofter can egg on one to trying harder himself: but. Chavez said that he does not com- pete with his classmates, only himself. With every new course comes the chal- lenge to defeat It. He wants to be the victor over the class and the teacher. Proudly he acknowledged. I ' ve never lost a battle yet, since Junior High. In thirty years time, people change a great deal: yet the conscientious scholar sees himself in the year 2012, not as an old man, but one with wisdom, one who can contribute to the community in many different ways. Times change and so do people, but the good things and people continue forward. 210 alitkWian f you want something good on life you must work on it. This is quite a fitting life philos- ophy for a high school saluta- torian. Obtaining salutatorian sta- tus can easily be described as a good accomplishment in life and can be sure that it takes hard work. Sara Andon. 1982 salutatorian, claims that this is her philosophy in life - to work hard for something that is good in life, that you want. Early in years the brown-haired, brown- eyed honor student trained herself to learn. One must develop the ability to discipline himself over a period of time. It doesn ' t come over night. Possessing the discipline not to quit, she pushed herself to accumulate her 3.93 grade point average. The only class she received a B in was Algebra II because she can excel in mathematics that are based on geometric rather than algebraic concepts. Along with personal satisfaction. she disclosed, being salutatorian has the advan- tage of getting accepted to better colleges with probable scholarships. Unsure, as of yet, of her exact college des- tination, she has definite stakes set on at- tending a university. I worked this hard to get the grades I have, I should be able to take that step forward. Although she is undecided on where to continue her education, she has several fields of interest which include music, art. astronomy, and psychology. Even before getting into high school, An- don was very active in extra curricular events such as the American Legion Essay Contest which she placed third in the nation. During her four-year term here, the ex- tremely active student participated in an abundance of school activities: Marching and Concert Band, Woodwind and flute quintets, Renaissance Trio, Chamber Singers treasur- er. Supper Theatre instramental accompian- ist, cast and orchestra member in all four major musicals. ASB secretary, sophomore class representative, swim team letter per- son. Girls ' League, California Scholarship Federation vice president and secretary, and Girls ' State Citizen, only to name a few. With all these activities to take up so much time, a person would be a fool to gamble on saying she could not possible have time for hobbies. Yet more talent flows from within her. She oil paints, pencil scetches. experi- ments with astronomy, writes music, and plays five instruments including the flute, pi- ano, trumpet, mello phone, and guitar which she self-taught herself to play. An observable confidant (yet not conceit- ed) and poised young lady. Andon speaks highly of her whole family who encourage her to progress to high peaks. But she points out. I like to model my personality after my sister because she is the rrtost kind and un- selfish person I have ever met. Even though there is quite an age differ- ence between herself and her brother. 24, and sister. 28. the unity in her family is quite apparent. I ' m pretty lucky. Though the age gap is a hindering factor in the closeness of my family, that doesn ' t mean that we love each other any less. After four years of exhausting the Yellow Jacket premises. There is not much she claims she would like to change except for the I don ' t care attitude that she has en- countered in many of the organizations she has been involved in. Tiring the ol ' cliche. It ' s a nice place to visit, but I wouldn ' t want to live there. An- don departs Colton High School with good memories. In retrospect, she hails her school. Colton High has given me the opportunity to utilize my talents in a positive manner. It has an active fine arts department and a good athle- tic program opposed to some schools that are unfortunately dwindling in some of those areas. Taking a generous portion of her thoughts pertaining to school, she continues. The teachers I have encountered have been ex- tremely caring and helpful as in regards to my scholastic and personal well being. 211 Senior Index Mlthmle Admmm: Mmrcblns Band. GAA, CSF, J.V. These awards are not based only on scho- lastic merit, but speaking ability, quickness, and overall personality. These awards also give students the incentive to reach towards their goals and compete with others in numerous contests. In most cases, such as the Bank of America A wards, these competitions require weeks of preparation before deci- sions are made. This includes in- tense research and practice if one is determined to be recognized for their particular talents. These stu- dents are greatly commended for their contributions and distin- guished representation of the class of 1982.
