There are many ways and places to hangout and hang loose during lunch. From the fast food franchises on Valley, to the brownbaggers in the cafeteria, students scarf down their lunches so they will have time to relax before the beginning of fifth period. Activities at lunch vary from the homecoming powderpuff games to eating sandaes from the bottom side up! Slaves were bought and sold, music was played, and coronations played a major part in the festivities during lunchtime. But the best lunch for most people is one with no homework. From skiing on the slopes to getting ready to dive to the bottom of the sea. Collect ing puppets IS fun. or getting away from all the city problems by going backpack ing. A year ago. Steve Faulk got his first guitar. He took lessons for three months but then stopped for a while. This summer, unable to afford gas money to the beach. Steve began play- ing his guitar again. Some days he played for four or five hours and would get very upset if he couldn ' t play at least an hour. Steve says he wants to learn to play the cello ne t and maybe some day I ' ll conduct a symphony or- chestra . The making of a clown by Mary Hodges Freshman brings cloth lo lilc Hobb Shively has been making puppets since he was nine. His lirst puppet was a mouse. He has performed lor a work shop at UCR. Also, he ' s performed a church service and did a show lor a day care center. He makes all his own puppets, and his favorite one is rep pentunl. Jay Nichols was introduced to backpacking when he was in 9th grade. His older brother gave him his pack, and he ' s been collecting other gear ever since. Jay has hiked in the San Gorgonio Mountains, Running Springs, Big Bear, and Arrowhead. His goal is to find a place in the mountains where he can be alone and where nobody has ever been before. Trina Filar do and David Milleson placed 7th out of 41 teams in Regional Championships at Bakersfield last year. She has won a gold medal in dance, which is the highest proficiency test one can take. They plan to skate in Regionals again this year in July. They have won several trophies in the three years they ' ve been skating. SOU ' i WEST PACIFIC .PtONSHIPS Mary Hodges is a clown. Mary became interested in clowning after a friend of her brother told her about it. For the fourth year in a row, Mary will be making people laugh at the Great Ail-American Youth Circus. The Circus does Mall shows, parades, charity benefits, and much more. Mary says she likes clowning because it gives me a chance to do crazy things. With make-up on Mary does things she wouldn ' t dream of without it. I love to make people laugh. When you make someone else happy, make them forget their troubles for even just a moment, it ' s the greatest feeling a person could have. = --- ' -- . J Math And Business Class Working Hard As we enter the decade of the 80 ' s we get a better lock at the electronic world thai lies ahead of us. The calculator and computer have been around for nearly 30 years, but the improvements in technology in the recent years have been so great that our life styles nearly revolve around a mechanical world. Many critics claim that students do not put forth the effort to excel! in studies as they did before computers arrived. But a series of studies have shown that computers are an asset to both business and home lifestyles. With each passing year new ideas come in mechanics. Society must learn to adapt to this changing enviroment and for those who do not they will be left behind to watch the others go forth opening new doors for man kind. An example might be an old-style patterned s y eater i orn iMth a matching narrow skirl slit on the side or in the middle and pointed high heeled shoes. Another popular fashion of today is the western look. Tight-fitting straight leg leans and a button-up shirt with a wrap around belt to match, complemented by low-cut boots and sometimes even a cowboy hat to top it all off. The dressier fashions for special days or e ,ening wear include baggy pleated pants with tight ankles, a lacy blouse and contrasting thick belt, and possibly a blazer to complete the ensemble. Also worn are two-piece suits and skirt sets with a contrasting blouse and boots or high heel shoes. New Coach Brings New Ideas Following the trend of our past teams, this year ' s experienced a season of few victories. Although the season had its low points a few events took place which brightened up the season. The team was headed by a new coach, Mr. Bill Gaddy. Coach Gaddy brough new ideas and techniques with him. This being his first year here, his ideas suggestions, and strategies were on a trial and error basis. For the first time in several years the Ken Hubbs trophy was not retained from the San Bernardino Cardinals. Although Colton Guard, John Williams makes an un- successful attempt to secure the ball from Poly. the Yellowjackets tried their best during the game to keep the score as close as possible, they couldn t escape their fate of losing in the final quarters; 78-81. A new tradition was added to the varsity squad. On the day of home games varsity members would put on their best dress pants and shirts, and in most cases accent them with a pair of Adidas or Nike sneakers. At the beginning of the season, hopes were dampened due to rain and poor track conditions, but as the season progressed the clouds and rain diminished and the spirit of the team shone through. Track is different from other sports because there is no split between varsity and j.v. Without the split it seems to build team morale and members work for a joint cause. This year, a new auxiliary unit was added to the already large Yellow Jacket Entertainment Corps. This unit, the Rifles, was started when supporters saw that rifle competition was becoming a prominent part of reviews. The Rifles, along with the flags, are under the instruction of Jon Emery. Although the Rifles are the smallest unit in the Corps, they are a proud part of the family. The Elags, Letters, and Rifles join the entire band at reviews and half-time competitions where they compete with other such units. At the Chaffey College Competition, the Elags tied for first place with Pasadena. Often seen in their yellow T- shirts, the Corps is an important part of the C.H.S. spirit. The Honors Chorale and Chamber Singers displayed these elements in various productions throughout the year. The large events for the Honors Chorale are the Christmas Supper Theatre and the end of the year Musical Variety Show. Individual talent as well as group participation makes these productions unique. Year round performances keep the Chamber Singers on their toes. Many of the groups and organizations within the community have the show choir entertam at gatherings throughout the year. Going to Hawaii was the main goal of the I9S0 Chamber Singers. It seems that earning the way to Hawaii to represent Colton at festivals there made the choir a team. Often, the closeness of the group seems to be hard to find, but it is always there. The choir brings smiles to all faces. Entertaining is what they re all about. Roxanne Berch. Marlt Messenger. ' Cheerleading is not all the bounce and glitter that it portrays. Not only is stamina needed, but hard work and skill are also required. It used to be that they would vote for the squad members that they wanted, but now the girls audition before judges. Training for cheerleaders runs throughout the year while they continue to perfect and create new cheers. Cheerleading is one of the best ways of sparking enthusiasm in the student body at pep assemblies. Competition is a highlight for the cheerleading squads. It enables the girls to display their talents and compete for various awards ranging from team judging to the judging of individuals. The 1980 Songleaders. front: Donna Espin- osa. Council Makes Positive Progress The Year of Revolution seems to be the theme of the 1980 Associated Student Body. Positive progress Is their goal, and nothing gets In the way when something needs to be done. The A.S.B. Council has lead the Student Body into areas it has never seen before. Many new activities have been held for the first time this year. The Winter Ball, an A.S.B. sponsored dance, was just one of the hope- to be traditions started with the class of ' SO. Ideas from every end of the campus are voiced In meetings of the House of Representatives and the I.C.C. Student feedback plays an important part In evaluating the new ideas. Student spirit this year has risen to unbelleveable heights. Obvious signs of the Yellowjacket spirit was found In the stands at football games as well as lunchtime contests and Homecoming competitions. In this course, students are given the opportunity to help with the backstage aspects of the productions held in Whitmer Auditorium. The only prerequisites for this crew are a strong desire and a full commitment, for the students must be willing to sacrifice many hours of after school time and often weekends. Positive attitudes are also needed to make each production of top quality. Stagecraft is usually associated with building sets. However, there is much more to this course than hammering nails-. Lighting, sound, costuming, make- up, and prop crews are eaually important in a major production. In their blacks ' , as their performance attire is called, they blend in with the atmosphere to perform their duties. The technical departments of the theatre are indisposable in all productions, and though they are not seen, deserve just as much applause as the performers. Stage Crew members pose for a group shot. This was the beginning of an eventful year for Girls ' League. An important part of being in Girls ' League is preparing for the February dance. Money raising activites for this event include bake sales, Valentine ' s Day flower sales and aluminum can drives. The Girls ' League Homecoming float is another major event of this group. This year, Girls ' League was one of the two clubs who entered a float in the Homecoming parade. Yogi Buzzes into the Land of Oz was their theme. ' J First Book Of A New Decade The new decade has brought many hectic days to the 1980 publications staff. Various unexpected incidents have helped to make this year almost impossible. The Publications room was robbed and vandalized early in the year, causing unneeded setbacks in the production of the book. Principal, Roll in Grider, worked with the School Board to replace some of the stolen equipment as quickly as possible so that production could resume. Certain positive changes throughout the year have proven to be good for everyone. This years Crimson and Gold is the first C.H.S. yearbook to have color senior portraits and added color pages. Other improvements which helped the staff were an improved dark room and a new business phone. Advisor: Mr. LaPlante, Senior Editor, Todd Brinker. Junior Editor-, Rene Villars, Sopho- more Editor. Song , which is known by these students who share each other ' s cultures and countries. Each student who travels is sponsored by the community chapter and the student chapter of the school which they attend. The student chapter of the American Field Service saw a very low year this year as participation has been declining for the past few years as the club replaced advisors. This year, it has fallen into the hands of Mr. Bridges. The students we have are willing to work.::, he points out. We II see how things go. On January 25th. the club sponsored a Field Pay. Foreign and domestic students sponsored by local communities were invited to come view our campus and its works. The students who came were from such countries as Peru. France. Brasil. and West Germany. They toured the classes and events of the day, and spread the A.F.S. spirit. . . A.F.S. is love. A.F.S. is brotherhood. , the song continues. The first meeting sparked interest in the large crowd that showed up at the first meeting. A few dropped out after that, but the remaining students were quite active. The club President. Martha Dale, led the meetings on Thursday lunches m Mr. Pure ' s room. Many new ideas such as a haunted house and community clean-ups were discussed. Many of these were not leasable, but will hopefully be realized in the future. The Key Club did, however, have a rather successful blood drive which brought many donors who gave their life fluid for the San Bernardino County Blood Bank. I kill during he 1980 Better Year For Faculty sga!Bim mwss!SRm.m M(ss¥j: rr-- ' i The 1980 C.H.S. faculty was faced with many adjustments. They seemed to adapt very well, to both the staff changes as well as the administrative ones. As a result of Prop. 13 many teachers on our staff were given new assigments. Teachers who had been teaching in certain departments for several years were moved to another department where they had to instruct students m subjects that they had little or no experience in teaching. The basic schedule of classes also went through many changes and teachers had to accommadate lesson plans for longer classes and shorter periods of time for the finals. Our new principal seemed to be the most noticeable change on the campus. It was necessary for the faculty to adapt to the new and different ideas and expections of principal Grider. Along with a new principal C.H.S. recieved six new outstanding faculty members who have all contributed to making our faculty one of the best around. ira3MRBiBrH.WT«ffi-j!i«awiW[ «?nrer7,w::- As kve enter the dazzling da n of the SO ' s. we are proud to have as one of our leaders a man who has helped many of us to find what helping people and ourselves is. He has been a Boy Scout leader for J5 years as well as being involved in baseball, having acted as president of the Colton Pony League. He has also coached boys Basketball at Colton Junior High and C.H.S.. and IS presently coach of Colton High ' s girls Junior Varsity basketball team. His involvement with such activities led him to be the recreation coordinator for the City of Colton. As a teacher he has taught all levels of education from elementary to high school. Here in the Colton Joint Unified School District he established the Ride Along program for his students. He was responsible for establishing the paramedic program here in the city of Colton. As a member of the City Council he is helping our community with his ideas and influence. It is with pride and pleasure that we dedicate the 1980 Crimson and Gold Yearbook to Mr. Hayes Mr. Hayes at A.S.B. meeting with Jay Vil- lars. Susan Rendell and Becky Glovack. Their efforts to maintain a high standard of living for our students have helped keep Coll on High School sparkling. Many of our service people have been with us for many years, guiding the quality of work within their de partments. Their work is hardly no ticed. however, because it is done so well. If we look, we see clean lawns, a well kept football field, painted walls, tasty food, and well kept bussing schedules. These are the marks of a great staff which has kept our campus and school up to par. J.l iT ' VJiWH Dusk Settles On Class Of Eighty As the Dawn of a Decade begins, dusk settles on the class of eighty. It is a temporary pause though, and after a reflection of this last year each student will go on with his or her life. Many will go to college, others trade schools, and others will get jobs. Each student, looking for happiness, will carry with them memories of friends, teachers, and all the faces around campus. Nobody knows what the future will hold for them, but maybe in the dreams of some student are the solutions to the worlds problems. Hopefully every person graduating will shine through life with pride from Colton High. Dusk settles on the California desert. @(il@i Come and join In song together Shout with might and main.
