Please accept my personal congratulations to the Class of 1977 on their graduation from Colton-Pierrepont Central School. I can offer no better advice to you than that of the former Secretary General of the United Nations and former Nobel Peace prize winner, Dag Hammar- skjold (1905-1961). Never look down to test the ground before taking your next step: only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find his right road . In the ten years since most of you were in se- cond grade, the graduating class of 1967 has lived through one of the most dramatic and pro- nounced periods of rapid change in history. They graduated into the turmoil of war and war re- sistance; they witnessed the most shocking scand- als in government; they suffered the worst infla- tion, and simultaneous recession, in forty years; they experienced women's, civil rights, sexual, and religious revolutions! Change so constant and so intense that we must certainly expect more in your first ten years out of school. I can only wish you well in that coming tur- moil; and remind you of the one constant you must, in my opinion, rely on to see you through. That is mutual respect and a commitment to the democratic solution. Undoubtedly it is the longer road, perhaps the less efficient road, but it is the only way that grants to each of us our potential dignity as human beings. If your Amer- ica does not see that goal through, then all the effort will have been in vain. I believe you will not fail. Good luck to each of you and to our system in your hands. I recall when you were in fourth grade. You were growing taller and growing wiser. Now you probably already have stopped growing taller but you will continue to grow wiser-Live wisely and wel I.
