SUPERVISING PRINCIPAL MICHAEL H. CORBITT You, the class of 1970, have just emerged from the most unusual decade in our history. While we were building castles in the air with the success of our moon explorations, the very foundations of our democracy were crumbling. A small percentage of students, concerned over the increasing complexity of the American way of life, the war in Viet-Nam, the violation of the rights of minority groups, and the so called “Establishment,” in an attempt to reshape society to their liking began to sew the seeds of revolution. These could have been worthy causes, but picked up by the herd they multiplied out of all proportion. Today as graduates you are inheriting a country plagued by riots, strikes, government scandals, immorality, crime and drugs. The decade of the Seventies belongs to each of you. Be an individual. Don’t join the herd. Your children have a right to a good, clean and beautiful America and it is up to you to prevent a small group of radicals from tampering with their heritage. Remember that every right that we have carries along with it certain duties and no good citizen is exempt from doing his share. Henry David Thoreau has written: “If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps he hears a different drummer.” Listen to your drummer and be a good citizen. “However mean your life is, meet it and live it.”
