Scijtenvc cetty TTtic aeC 0onfctt It is with mixed feelings of regret and hope that I bid farewell to the class of 1969. I feel that in this complicated, fast moving so- ciety of ours you have been cheated on the carefreeness that rightfully belongs to youth. You have seen our great country turn to violence in its streets, to the murder of its leaders and to the wanton sacrifice of life in an unnecessary war. You have seen one nation practically wiped out by starvation and another denied the right to a free government. You have seen other young, rebellious against authority and tradition, waste themselves by the use of drugs and degrade themselves by the loss of moral principles. You the graduates of 1969 have a com- mitment. Whether you go on to higher education, enter the armed forces or go to work immediately upon graduation you can do your little part in healing this sick world. Technology, science, nuclear weapons are not the answer. People all over the world want the same things that you do - love, understand- ing, security. These you can give by compas- sion and concern for the needs of others, not by indifference and apathy. My hopes for you can be expressed in the words of Helen Keller: “Youth may be headstrong, but it will advance its allotted length. Through the ages in the battle with the powers of evil - with poverty, misery, ignorance, war, ugliness, and slavery - youth has steadily turned on the enemy. That is why I never turn away from the new generation impatiently because of its knowingness. Through it alone shall salvation come.”
