“
V a e ct , c C €L t C Our country’s surging economy and high standard of living are un- surpassed globally. Yet America is far from a stage of perfection; she is blemished by many social problems. We feel that a problem exists today because of contemporary man’s reluctance to become involved in his society’s problems, his reluctance not only to detect and expose these problems but also to suggest possible alternatives and work for their ac- complishment. Modern Day Dissenters are failing because they simply do not go far enough. They detect and expose the problem and leave it at that. For their voices to be heard and recognized, possible solutions to their grievances should be offered simultaneously. Vociferous protests and acts of violence are not what we deem necessary, we need people who care and have the courage to become truly “involved.” We need people who care about the problems of our disillusioned youth, of the Black People, of the poverty-stricken, of the senile and the handicapped. We need people who not merely care, but physically in- volve themselves with the solution of these problems. The class of Nine-teen Hundred Sixty-nine wishes to dedicate the Coltonian - to quote Spanky and our Gang - to those who “give a damn about their fellow man.” 2 yj’tEs-zncc President DAVID RIEHL Treasurer PEGGY WEEGAR Vice President PAT DUPREY ELAINE NORMAN JOANNE SMITH Secretary DALE LINCOLN 5 RONNIE DURANT RUTH FISH £ DENNIS MOUSAW 1 ■ 8 SANDY COLE KATHY HELMAR JUDY FOUNTAIN CALISTA WATSON DAWN MOORE CORBITT I -i MRS. VALENTINE Scijtenvc cetty TTtic aeC 0onfctt It is with mixed feelings of regret and hope that I bid farewell to the class of 1969. I feel that in this complicated, fast moving so- ciety of ours you have been cheated on the carefreeness that rightfully belongs to youth. You have seen our great country turn to violence in its streets, to the murder of its leaders and to the wanton sacrifice of life in an unnecessary war. You have seen one nation practically wiped out by starvation and another denied the right to a free government. You have seen other young, rebellious against authority and tradition, waste themselves by the use of drugs and degrade themselves by the loss of moral principles. You the graduates of 1969 have a com- mitment. Whether you go on to higher education, enter the armed forces or go to work immediately upon graduation you can do your little part in healing this sick world. Technology, science, nuclear weapons are not the answer. People all over the world want the same things that you do - love, understand- ing, security. These you can give by compas- sion and concern for the needs of others, not by indifference and apathy. My hopes for you can be expressed in the words of Helen Keller: “Youth may be headstrong, but it will advance its allotted length. Through the ages in the battle with the powers of evil - with poverty, misery, ignorance, war, ugliness, and slavery - youth has steadily turned on the enemy. That is why I never turn away from the new generation impatiently because of its knowingness. Through it alone shall salvation come.” £cCcccatio i SEATED, L.
