COLTONIAN STAFF Our class has been the first one in years to have a trip by which to remember our Senior year. At Easter time, we enjoyed an exciting and eventful trip to New York City—a trip that will linger long in the memories of all of us. Now, that our career in high school is drawing to a close, it is not without a pang of regret that we think of leaving our familiar high school life and classmates. Of course, though, we are all looking forward with anticipation to our commencement exercises, which—while they mean the end as far as high school for us goes—mean for the most part the beginning of our start out in the world. The class of '1 7 senses keenly at this time the verity of the statement that The moving finger writes, and having writ moves on. ;)4 k CLASS HISTORY We, the class of 1 1 7» have almost reached the last stretch of high school life. We are nearing the parting of the way, where we, as individ- uals, must embark upon the road of our choice-wheth r it be to go on to higher schools or to start our career in the business world at the present time. Our class, which entered Colton High School in 19ii3, was the first to start its high school career as Freshmen in our temporary school abode- the town hall-but, we, a comparitively quiet class with nineteen members (of course this does not mean that we stayed quiet indefinitely) entered with ambitious ideas. At our first meeting, we elected as class officials: President- Shirley Leary; Vice-President-Janice Gotham; Secretary-Treasurer-Anne Hayes; and Class Advisor-Miss Cunti. Our class, being anxious to participate in school activities, took part in Glee Club, band, basket-ball, and other extracurricular activities 1 During the year, Clarence Fifield and Buddy 01mstead joined us and then took leave again; Richard Green also left us during the year. The enjoyment of the school year was concluded by a less pleasant event for some, namely, our Freshman examinations, but, after all, why let them dampen our spirits with such a very promising summer vacation immediately following. In the fall of 1Uh, we returned to school-now a class of seventeen I During the summer, June Clothier,Richard Smith, and Richard Tucker left us and Margaret LaVine was transferred to Potsdam,but to make up for these absences, we had received three new members-June James, Margaret McCarthy, and David Thomas. As Sophomores, we selected for our class officers: President- Margaret McCarthy; Vice-President-Neil Swift; and Secretary-Treasurer- June James! Miss Goggin was our class advisor. That year we attempted, and succeeded, at the first social activity of our high school career- a Hallowe'en party. During the year, Winona Shatraw entered the class and David Thomas left. At the close of the year, June James was trans- ferred to Potsdam. The next year found us an ambitious Junior Class of fifteen members as Winona Shatraw had left us. As class officials, Donal Austin was chosen as President; Anne Hayes as Vice- President; Paul Sanford as Secretary; Bernice Gorman as Treasurer and Mr. Butler as Advisor. Paul- ine Chase joined us during the year, being transferred from Madrid. Our main social events of the year were a sport dance in November and part interest in a Junior-Senior Ball in June (We cooperated with the Seniors in presenting a very successful ball.) This, of course, was of the most marked events of the year. Our class rings, which we had ordered during the year, reached us during summer vacation. At last, the fall of '1 6 rolled around finding us, at this time, on the top round of our high school life—that is, in the position of Seniors. Our class election returns were as follows!; President- Paul Sanford; Vice-President- George Swift; Secretary- Neil Swift; Treasurer- Anne Hayes; and Class Advisor- Mr. Butler. Our Senior play— Sulphur and Molasses —a sport dance and our yearbook have kept us quite occupied throughout the year, but have been a means of raising our class treasury's sum.

CLASS PROPHECY As we all know, our future is written in the stars. A few clever astrologers with their powerful telescopes seek the inevitable. One stormy night, our Senior Class, prompted by a de- sire to know where they would be and what they would be do- ing ten years from now, visited one of these astrologers. It was an old man who hobbled out to meet us and invited us to ascend his Tower. There he focused his telescope to see just ten years ahead, and after searching the sky with his .telescope for a moment he exclaimed 'I see it - your class - but what a change! What is this? McCarthy Dancing Academy and Margaret is the chief instructor in charge.' ' Now I'll turn the telescope to Hollywood, to see what I can among the movie stars. There's Paul Sandford, playing Clark Gable roles, and his favorite leading lady is Bernice Gorman. • But What of Leota Moore? Oh, she's a dean in a girl's College, and does she lecture those poor girls ' ' What can this be? Why it's a schoolhouse, and here ft one of the members of the class, Anne Hayes, head of the Social Studies Department.' ' Shirley Leary is head band instructor at the new Col- ton Pierrepont Central School.' ' I see Clyde Severance as foreman of a very nrosperoue milk route in a nearby town.' ' Janice Gotham still has the habit of giggling,though she controls herself as she teaches her Clarinet lessons to the young people of Colton.' ' Oh, boy! a basketball game! One of the players is hurt. Why it's George Swift, the coach, who comes to the rescue.' ' Ellen Tucker.is a private secretary of a big iron and steel executive.' ' I see Donald Austin as a traveling salesman of a large firm. He is selling mudguards for soup-spoons and blisterless hoe-handles,' ' I see Neil Swift as a properous farmer and banker in the much enlarged village of South Colton.' ' Emogene Sylvester is now engaged as a hair-dresser and a lecturer on beauty methods. ' Robert Sullivan is a very successful medical doctor in Potsdam.' ' Joyce Hogle is now a very capable female politician and is in the State Assembly. She is going to campaign for a seat in the National House of Representatives. ' Pauline Chase is a governess, teaching a couple of idle rich children.' ' Bernice Gorman, in her scare time, is busy writing to her old class mates, giving them the News on Hollywood.I Well, that seems to be all. The astrologer tuhned away from the telescope and said, Goodbye, and good luck and congratulations on your successful futures. There was a chorus of Goodbyes and Thank yous, as we hurried away to our various tasks. MARGARET MCCARTHY
