JDAMJI ISANTI IM9 15 Tribal Days Add Splash Of Color To Campus Life 16 PAST TO PRESENT Next year will mark the Golden Anniversary of the University of Southern Colorado. It is appropriate to reflect on the post with o view to the future, to take stock of where we hove been and inventory our values of tomorrow. Southern Colorado Junior College wos o protege of the depression, conceived June, 1933; the first classes were conducted on the third floor of the Pueblo County Court House. Its beginning wos a sroremenr of foith and hope for the future. The first graduating class of 1935, consisted of 17 students, compared to 879 in 1983. Founders, E. T. Kelly ond Frank S. Hoog, Jr., moy be proud of their vision ond tenacity; their goals for educational opportunities for the youth of Southern Colorado hove been met o rhousond-fold. Graduates over the forty-eight years hove been faced with increasingly complex problems, none more challenging thon those which will be encountered in the present. Education is the proper ond necessory tool for dealing with change ond challenge. Each decode brought its own cliche of trouble. The thirties were the recovery years. Students were faced with bose problems of food ond shelter; feeding the fomily ond providing minimal necessities were the primary goals to be obtained through education. The forties were the war years, which required personol sacrifice for the good of our country. Mony groduotes joined the effort to protect home ond heorrh for democracy. Puffery ond dreams of prosperity marked the fifties. The ropid growth of commercialism, materialism ond technological debauchery served to spawn the protest, rebellion ond unrest which surfaced in the sixties. The graduates of the seventies received their degrees with uncertainty. Rebuffing old values, they turned into themselves in o search for meaning. They become the me generation which ruthlessly said if like it was , in on orgy of self-indulgence. It is clearly in the decode of the eighties, too early to moke o dear determination of the direction the youth will take. There ore signs, however, that this will be the healthiest of oil ages - the we generation. Never before hove humans been forced to moke value judgements for which no path hos been hewn. Science ond technology hove conspired to create moral dilemmos which will change the course of oil mankind. There is o new global awareness: society is coming to the realization rhot we ore oil citizens of the universe. A seemingly insignificant occurrence in the middle-eosr directly effects ond impacts on each of us. Now, it is possible for one person to affect o change, to voice on opinion which will be heord oround the world. Education is more imperative than ever. To voice on informed opinion requires o lorge scale understanding. Presently, it is not enough to be knowledgeable on local issues; it is necessory to hove the ability to assess situations on o universal plone. The informed must see post the nostalgic longing for isolotion to the vision of o unified world. Our world hos become one of interdependence. We must accept the responsibility for ourselves ond our fellowman. Graduates of the eighties must become the we generation, to become otherwise would be suicidal. Coryt I. Junior quarterback John Wristen led all the quarterbacks in the Notionol Colleglote Athletic Association in passing efficiency with a superb rating of 182.5. USC ended the 1983 seoson by losing in the first round of the Notional Association of Intercollegiate Athletic playoffs to Central State Oklahoma University, the eventual notionol champions. MEN'S INDOOR TRACK The indoor track teom ended the seoson with a 10-1 record, winning the Colorado School of Mines' Invitational twice ond finishing second in the Air Force Acodemy Invitational. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL USC's women's boskerboll team won a thrilling 84-77 overtime decision over the University of Denver. The Lady Indians won three of the final four games to post on 8-18 record. WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS The Lady Indians gymnosrics teom captured the RMAC chompionships for the third consecutive yeor.
