Many anthropologists believe this single step to be the prime impetus in the development of mankind. We, at The Colorado College, can think of many things which are round - can you? Because you have left the definition of round nebulous (and probably purposely so), my reply shall be equally equivocal. As the wheel, roundness spans the course of humanity. Rather than spending burdonsome and worthless moments defining roundness I shall instead, in my discursive manner, illustrate the exigencies of round in its most diverse forms. From baseballs to meatballs, from wedding rings to bathtub rings (and those around-the-rosy), man, is continually bombarded with roundness — circles, rings, hoops (as in Cape of Good Hoop), bands, spheres (as in sphere of influence) and spirals (ie, the ever dreaded spiral meningitis). Roundness, and I intentionally shy from the rigid, unemotional, scientific definitions and embrace the more humanitarian notion, seems to permeate every aspect of mankind from the physical to the metaphysical, from the real to the supernatural, from the spoken to the very archetypal. Let us briefly consider those concepts and their verbiage, which are round in the purest form. For example, a round of applause (a brilliant performance does not elicit a sphere of applause, or a square, for that matter), a round of golf, a round of beef and (its contribution to the world of music) a singing round. Let us move to man himself. Here we find a most compelling round. What would one call a true Renaissance man or our all-American Boy Scout? The answer is obvious enough. We hail such individuals as well-rounded. Which reminds me of a rather curious anecdote. I knew a guy who ' s name happened to be Mel (which has nothing to do with the story) who was one of the top scouts, but he never got his Eagle Scout because he weighed, as I recall, well over 300 pounds and simply could not squeeze into a kayak. Sad, I know, but true. But the point here is that this corpulent scout, in his misunderstanding of the boy scout creed, offers us an example of well-rounded on both the metaphysical and the physical plane. But, well-rounded, in the physical sense, need not connote anything negative. Why, here, in sexist America, many gape, with chins-dropped and salavia-drooling, at pulchritudenous individuals and gawk, boy, now, she ' s really well-rounded. Quickly, I would like to turn to more conceptual notions of round. First, it is mandatory and quite apropos that I mention circles. Although I might address such fascinating notions as circles of awareness and circles of friends, I am concerned here with circles as they relate specifically to the world of academia. Two particular circles come to mind, which have proven crucial in understanding many aspects of intellectual and political life. I refer here to the oratorical devices of circular logic and circumlocutions. Certainly these notions are vital in understanding political rhetoric and in dealing with the psuedo-perspicacious world of cocktail parties (which I understand are essential to the world of academia). An ongoing debate exists between many historians and political scientists over the nature of history. Is it round, ie, is it circular? Are there established patterns, which dictate the movement of history? The dialectics viciously take stand against such ideas, and the Nietzscheites scream irrelevancy. From Kierkegaard to Kant the debate continues (and I need not delve here, for by definition, each is self-explanatory). Is there indeed a pattern, a circular flow of content-discontent, peace and war, reactionism-radicalism, etc; or does such an ordering represent an abuse of the historical continuum? And, if circular history exists, does this imply determinism, and if so, what of morality? (note heaviness, ve-de-de-de-de-de) As I sit here, my deep sense of humility will not allow me to answer any of these most perplexing (and quite fascinating) questions. This shall be the goal of the coming years of intellectual development. Your most interesting question is but one in a metaphysical spectrum of compelling dilemmas. My search, my quest, to derive some intellectual sense from this seeming intellectual chaos shall hopefully lead me to your door. Thank you. how ' s that for sententious prose? With an outstanding pledge class of 37 new girls, these young ladies had much on their hands with not only initiation but also learning new names. A totally new atmosphere appeared at the house, not only with all the new faces, but a freshly decorated interior and exterior. In the service world, the Thetas were busy both with their national philanthrophy and numerous local projects. Lots of concerned Thetas concentrated their time and energy in working with the Colorado Springs Day Nursery, Silver Key, and the Special Olympics. Carnation sales and Thanksgiving Day dinners also contributed to the service aspect of the house. Socially, the girls were kept pleasantly occupied with three excellent formals, an unusual Halloween costume party, an International Affair, a south of the Border Celebration, and a get-together with the CSU Thetas. And with all the new renovations, the lodge became a very popular spot to hang around. Summing up the year briefly: productive, extremely busy, and lots of funlThe outgoing senior class, as with the pledge class, is large and we will genuinely miss these graduates: Kathy Bartels, Judy Brown, Nancy Chaps, Susan Collie, Jenny Combs, Linda Crout, Kappy Demmin, Jane Hansen, Melissa Levinson, Marcia Mitchell, Suzie Moore, Laurie Phelps, Sandy Pierce, Sue Schulte, Mary Shifrin, Majorie Thompson, Deccie Francis, Laurie Suter, Maggie Williams, and Sherry Ives. The November formal with the CSU Kappas led into initiation activities and fraternity parties. At Christmas time they said goodbye to 3 seniors: Dee Dee Carlson, Diane McGinity, and Kathy Sweeney. Their new philanthropy project, the Ephriam House for Girls, generated much support from the chapter as Kappas entertained the girls at a play, roller skating, a movie, and Saturday afternoons at the house. Spring arrived with the annual Open House and a new, rowdy squad for their Softball team, Delaney ' s Bar and Grill. After Kite and Key, with the Thetas, and Special Olympics, the Kappas opened up their house for a fund raising event . . . the Kappa Kaberet which included a spaghetti dinner and a show. Senior Breakfast closed the year as the chapter honored the graduating actives; Sarah Anderson, Sarah Davis, Mary Gottenberg, Deidre Jo Fricke, Kerri Halberg, Julie Hancock, Katie King, Kathy McElderry, Robin McQuay, Cathy McLagan, Jill Meir, Jan Stephens, Karen Swan, Marilee Thompson, Lisa Weiske and Jennie Young E. Grossberg 1977-78 has been a great year for Delta Gammas! 29 new initiates have added much fun and excitement to our house. We kept busy socially with functions with fraternities, formal dances, invitational cocktail parties, mountain picnics, and F.A.C. ' s. We have strongly supported our philanthropy for the blind through hosting parties for the Deaf and Blind School children. We raised over $500 for Project Vision and sold melons at Flyday for the B.O.L.D. program. Our house has grown so close and individual friendships have deepened through our all house activities. Our Christmas Holiday dinner, house retreats to the mountains, ski weekends, Tuesday Evening Clubs, skit parties, a winning softball and Trivia team, class sneaks, watching the Super Bowl together ... we had pretty much fun, huh? Delta Gamma had a year of crazy and fun parties, close friendships, and chances to serve others. Yet there was still time left to study as Beta Delta Chapter of Delta Gamma won the Scholarship Award this year for our province! We are very proud of and will miss our graduating seniors: Deb Armstrong, Lori Bower, Mary Demmy, Brenna Gentry, Carol Gordon, Sharon Hill, Diane Huntsinger, Linda Johnson, Peri Kettler, Jan Long, Ahmoy Look, Peggy McKenna, Abbie Polleys, Mary Reisher, Enie Schantz, and Carolyn Silver. Thomsen This year Gamma Phi Beta had a full range of social and charitable activities. They raised more money than any other organization in the Dance for Muscular Distrophy and at Halloween they carved pumpkins and delivered them to cheer up the children at the Shoshone Home for the Mentally Retarded. The house also sponsored educational lectures for the whole campus. Dean McLeod spoke on the changing role of women and Michael Rogell presented an informative lecture on the workings of the stock market. Gamma Phi Beta has also been active socially this year. Besides the bi-annual formal dances, they had a ski weekend, a Screw Your Roommate Party, an Eskimo Party, a Senior Luau, A Suppressed Desires Party and a variety of Study Breaks. New additions to the house included 15 pledges and an exciting new house mom. Nine seniors were; Molly Batson, Jennie Bals, Jo Ann Schneider, Mary McNeely, Vickie Weitzes. And graduating last semester were: Taffy Bond, Lori Ranada, Gayle Stayton and Carol Stott. The Betas held several memoriable parties during the past year, among them the Space Gig and Wild West Party. However the Betas were also eager sponsors of the walkathon and helped to send their paperboy to Disneyland. Next year ' s president, Mike Boyleston, will have to work hard with a small but spirited class to make up for the graduation of Brad Bransky, Dave Buck, Tom Creigh, Ted Diamond, Tiger Hall, Jeff Houlton, Scott Muellich, Peter Oatman, Roger Pack, and Jim Treuttner. S. Grossberg Above (l-r) Lee Witcher, Dottie Hiersteiner Left Tim McNamara, Charcoal Broile S Grossberg SIGMA CHI With this year ' s commencement, Sigma Chi sends twenty members into the real world. Blessed by good fortune and a strong rush, the fraternity managed to initiate twenty three new members, the largest pledge class in chapter history. The 1977-78 academic year marked the continuation of many Sigma Chi traditions. The house staged formal dances in the Fall and Spring, and the beloved dreaded Christmas party at the end of block 4. Ms. Katie McCormack was crowned as this year ' s Sweetheart at the Sweetheart Dance. The Sigs also threw two all-campus parties, the proceeds from which were donated to the Wallace Village for minimally brain damaged young adults in Broomfield, Colorado. Sigma Chi was active in community service, sponsoring a South American foster child, volunteering help to Silver Key, a senior citizens service organization, and initiating a major house recycling program. Sigma Chi continued to be active in all facets of campus activity, including committee work, student government, work on publications, and athletics. The mighty Golden Swine, Sigma Chi ' s representative in intramural sports, captured campus championships in football, Softball, and volleyball. Sigma Chi ' s graduating this year are: Josh Blake, Charlie Chapin, Chris Davis, Dave Dietel, Ron Edmondson, Bill Eubank, Jay Hartwell, Scott Herrera, Doug Holmes, Jeff Kaes, Dave Kasper, Ralph Kisberg, Dave Margrave, Lowell Moore, Ed Motch, Bruce Reed, Steve Scherer, Rick Schultz, Tim Shupp, and Morley Thompson. Other social highlights included the Christmas Party, Valentines Day Party, Pledge Formal, and the 3rd International Mussy Fuss Tournament. In service to the community the Phi Delts spent a day at Frontier Boys ' Village during which they played sports with the boys and did some clean up work. The entire chapter participated in the Special Olympics and assisted in some major renovations at the Hope House for girls. After a fun and exciting year the Phi Delta ' s bid farewell to the seniors: Mike Brennan, Dick Capek, Dave Florsheim, Tom Gander, Jeff Indeck, Rick Kilbride, Dean Kurth, Brian Matayoshi, Jeff Miller, Bill Sheldon, Bob Shifflet, Ken Shroyer, Rob Watt. ► • i J. Starting out the school year with the 1st annual C.C. Mines all campus party on a sunny Saturday after the game. Other all campus parties included the 53rd annual post D.U. hockey game party and 42nd annual all campus mountain party up on the Rampart Range Road, as well as many sorority and theme parties. Kappa Sigma helped to raise over $500 for U.N.I.C.E.F. on Halloween. Kappa Sigma also took on a full year ' s committment with the West Colorado Boys Receiving Home, a home for parentless boys. Activities with the boys included movies, football and soccer games, hockey games, softball games, cross country skiing, and bowling. On campus, Kappa Sigma supported the Escort System throughout the year and Dialogue in the Spring. Internally the living room was redecorated with new furniture and lighting. Currently Kappa Sigma continues to grow after a very successful rush. PHI GAMMA DELTA S. Grossberg The 1978 edition of Phi Gamma Delta was as wild and crazy as ever! Purple garter, ski weekend and the infamous Fiji Island again highlighted over the year. Once again the Fijis proved to be the stalwarts not only in the classroom, but the varsity and intramural sports programs as well. Several Fijis were distinguished for their outstanding achievements in their areas.
