The Colorado College NUGGET 1974 •a ? m r - V :: - j ! IN submitting to the public the first annual issued by any class in Colorado College, a few introductory words seem fitting. The purpose of the class of 1901 in publishing this book is to give an impulse to the life of the College which shall inspire every future class to follow our example. We have chosen as a name, which we hope the successive volumes will bear, one which was, in our judgment, the best of many suggested by the student body; one appropriate to this region and to the locality, at the same time symbolic of the tiger colors, and expressive of the spirit which is characteristic of the College. We have tried to make this publication what a college annual should be — a record of the college life, representative of the students and containing a fair proportion of fun and fancy, yet not unmindful of the best literary standards. ft r :: , iV SO WE RESPECTFULLY SUBMIT to the students, the alumni, and the other friends of Colorado College, Volume I of THE PIKE ' S PEAK NUGGET. You may test it in the crucible of criticism, you may horde it away like a miser, or you may make it an ornament for your table and exhibit it freely to your friends. Our labor will be repaid if you find it true gold. THESE SENTIMENTS are not unlike those felt by the current staff seventy years later, and so we echo this INTRODUCTION with but minor emendations. SO WE RESPECTFULLY SUBMIT to the students, the alumni, and the other friends of Colorado College, Volume Seventy- Three of THE PIKE ' S PEAK NUGGET, the record of the year of the Centennial, 1974. ALTHOUGH COLORADO COLLEGE is strictly non-sectarian and independent of all ecclesiastical control, its early history shows the influence of the Congregational Church. THE FOUNDATION of Colorado College was first actively un- dertaken by the Congregational Association in 1873 due to a proposal of Reverend Edward P. Tenney, who realized the need for educational facilities under Christian auspices. The first ac- tive work of the association was prompted by Professor Thomas Haskell, who entered into the foundation with great earnestness and acted as financial agent during the establishment of the College. The College was officially approved at a meeting of The Congregational Conference in Denver on January 20, 1874, two years prior to the statehood of Colorado. Chief financial backer of the young college was General William Jackson Palmer, owner and builder of the Denver Rio Grande Railroad. The Reverend Jonathan Edwards was in charge of the opening of the college. IV = - T . -- ' ;.-r « ,  r3« ' -. SflfcS A? ON MAY 6, 1874, the association opened the first classes of Colorado College in the old Wanless Building (now the First National Bank Building) with an enrollment of Seventeen Students. The following September a two-room temporary building was erected opposite Acacia Park with the enrollment increased to forty students. For six years this building remained the home of Colorado College. By this time the Panic of 1873 and the grasshoppers of 1874 had completely paralyzed business and hopes. The cry of those who remain- ed in the territory was money for bread, and not money for colleges. President Dougherty went East at this time to appeal for financial assistance but after a most earnest effort reported that nothing could be done at that time in the way of assisting Colorado College financially, and with this report came his resignation. REVEREND EDWARD P. TENNEY was sent out from New England to investigate the reported possibilities of the College and upon his favorable report was elected President of the College, and he assumed his active duties in 1876. President Tenney ' s coming brought new life and hope to the college. President Tenney was an advocate of the highest standards of scholarship and was not satisfied with anything below the standards of Har- vard and Yale. He had, of course, the problem of finance. For the purpose of securing a large en- dowment fund without begging it, he entered upon a land scheme which, when viewed in light of pre- sent day business ventures, was exceedingly far- sighted and prospectively profitable. However, the venture ended in failure, and his office was vacated by the Trustees in 1884. His major con- tribution was the foundation of the present-day campus which began with the construction of Cutler Hall in 1877 and its occupation in January of 1880. The College was run by a faculty committee during the intervening years, and the future of the College was definitely in doubt. This bleak picture continued until 1888. THE ADMINISTRATION of William Frederick Slocum as President of Colorado College began in 1888 and would eventually span twenty-nine years, the longest to date. He was an able administrator, educator, and above all, builder. The endowment was enlarged by continued contributions from the East as well as from friends of the College who had come into wealth during the Cripple Creek Gold Strike of 1891. Many of the buildings of the modern era were constructed during Slocum ' s long ad- ministration — Hagerman Hall, a men ' s residence, Montgomery and Ticknor Halls, women ' s residences, Corburn Library, Perkins Fine Arts Hall, McGregor and Bemis Halls, and Cossitt Hall. Last, but hardly least, was the omnipresent Palmer Hall, which still stands today as the campus ' chief source of awe and legend. Yes, General Palmer ' s ageless contribution did block the proposed streetcar line of millionaire miner Winfield S. Stratton when its construction was begun in 1903. When this builder of the Colorado College presidency retired in 1917, Slocum left a valuable legacy. Colorado College had entered the Twentieth Century. M ' DURING THE YEARS between World War I and the seventy-fifth anniversary of the College in 1949, the campus saw four different Presidents— C. A. Duniway, C. C. Mierow, Thurston Davies, and William H. Gill. The college waxed and waned with enrollment depending upon several fac- tors—World War I, the ' Roaring Twenties ' , The Great Depression, World War II, and the Post-War Era. Notable among the new edifices constructed was the chapel donated by Eugene P. Shove during the Mierow ad- ministration and dedicated in 1931. This was the only major construction since the Slocum Era. During these years the College grew in prestige and stature, with continuing improvement in the campus endowment fund. Future President Lloyd Worner graduated from Colorado College in 1942. Construction of Slocum and Loomis dor- mitories concluded the Gill administration. r DR. LOUIS T. BENEZET succeeded Gill as President of the College in 1955, and the College began to build again under his capable administration. He was especially successful in gaining support from large foundations for the college. Among the con- tinuing benefactors of the college were the Ford Foundation, the Carnegie Foundation, the Boettcher Foundation, the Olin Founda- tion, and the El Pomar Foundation. The resulting additions to the physical plant were Rastall Center, the Fraternity Complex, Tutt Library, and Olin Hall of Science. NOT SINCE SLOCUM ' S ERA has the cam- pus undergone such physical changes. Since Dr. Lloyd E. Worner became the College ' s first alumnus President in 1963, eight new additions have been made to the growing campus— Honnen Ice Rink, Schlessman Pool, Boettcher Health Center, Mathias Hall, Armstrong Hall, El Pomar Center, and the new Arts Music Building. But steel and ce- ment have not been Worner ' s only tools for building. He has built the College ' s endow- ment to a new level of security, unknown to many similarly sized colleges in the educational world, notably the recent Packard Grant of $7 million and El Pomar Foundation ' s $1 million endowment. These are achievements which are unparalleled in the College ' s history. The celebrated Colorado College Plan has been another in- novation during the Worner presidency which is proving a great success. It is an ap- propriate honor that Dr. Lloyd E. Worner, who was present during the seventy-fifth an- niversary of the College in 1949 as a member of the History Department, should now preside over the Centennial Celebrations of 1974. 12  m. • •• 13 14 15 LEFT: Mrs. Russell Tutt, President Lloyd E. Worner has been associated with Colorado College since his days here as an undergraduate during the 1940 ' s. Since retur- ning to CC after his postgraduate studies, he has served in various capacities — professor of history, Dean, and finally President of the college. For his many outstanding con- tributions to Colorado College as a whole, and his financial and moral support of this book, we think it more than appropriate to DEDICATE THIS CENTENNIAL EDITION OF THE COLORADO COLLEGE NUGGET TO LLOYD E. WORNER, A FINE EDUCATOR AND A FINER MAN. 178 Photo index Adams, Debbie (4) 79 Agre, Louis Steven (2) 80,107,150 Ahem, Paul Benz (1) 55,91 Allen, Philip Brooks (1) 58,161 Allison, Charles Franklin (2) 55,157 Allured, Michael Earl (3) 56 Amsterdam, Phillip Lehr (1) 58 Anders, Alpha Jerome (2) 55,93,149 Anderson, Bruce Statham (4)89,101 Anderson, Peter Eric (4) 102,141 Anderson, Samuel Collins (2) 57 Anderson, Todd Fredrick (1) 20,57 Angell, Richard Lee (4) 55 Anthony, Paul Brooks (4) 56,150 Ardell, Gary Lynn (1) 55 Ardell, Jeffery Laurence (3) 55,157 Armour, Ross Wilton (2) 32,57 Atkins, Susan Diane (4) 168 Ayoola, Babalola Adebisi (4) 106 Ballew, Alice (1) 108,165 Balsam, Richard Aldo (4) 58 Banks, David James (1)20,77,108,149 Barker, Michael L. In fact, we have been planning it for nearly four years. There are many people who deserve recognition for help in its completion. Mr. John Fotenos, publisher representative, Mr. Joe Cupp, account executive, and Mr. John Klumb, salesmanager, and the hundreds of Walsworth employees of Marceline, Missouri, were indispensible in the publication of this special book. We thank them for their special interest in reestablishing a yearbook of traditional standards on the CC campus, and for their patience with certain editors. Without them these 2000 copies of the NUGGET would never have been printed. Printing was done on special premium regency paper in 8 point Optima Italic type. The in- troduction and advertising sections were printed with 12 point Melior type to enhance their nostalgic value. We are especially grateful for the support which we have from the administration of Colorado College. Mr. Brossman, Mr. Kilkenney, and Mr. Reid all deserve special thanks for their help in this undertaking. There can be no words to express our gratitude to President Lloyd Worner for his backing and confidence in this special project. We sincerely hope that it meets his expectations. WALSWORTH Marceline. Mo.. t ' .S.A 191 II 190 H ?■¥fftrri ■■■I 4f As these two photographs of The Colorado College Campus show, the college is ever- changing. In this the seventy third edition of the COLORADO COLLEGE NUGGET, we have tried to capture not only the historical background of the Centennial, but also the life of the college during this particular year. It turned out to be a more difficult project than one would have imagined. Individuals are the backbone of this college. For one hundred years they have been; for another one hundred years they will be. We have attempted to highlight as many different individuals, past and present, as possible within our physical limitations. We feel we have made substantial improvement over our most recent predecessors. During these years of the megaversity small liberal arts colleges such as Colorado College have been dying all across this country. In celebrating the 100th birthday of the College, we are in essence saying that we will not die. At the same time, collegiate yearbooks are dying all across this country. In celebrating this edi- tion of the COLORADO COLLEGE NUGGET we are in essence saying that we will not die. In $$Mk any case, we have provided proof that there is interest enough to warrant the publication of such a yearbook during this centennial year or any other year. We are providing a record of this college which is unavailable through any other source. Take time to examine the seventy-two earlier editions of the PIKE ' S PEAK NUGGET. They provide an intimate look at the growth and life of an important educational in- stitution through the eyes of the people who are closest to it. It is a valuable record. Examine the future editions of the NUGGET. This creative yearbook journalism should be con- tinued in order to provide a further record of this thriving establishment. The planners of CC ' s Bicentennial will relish this look back into the 20th Century and will be as intrigued as we were with the first edition of the book. This is a rare publication not only because it records the activities and people at a rare time in the life of Colorado College, but also because it is by printing — a limited edition. You are the proud owner of one book out of two thousand. Treasure it if for that reason alone. 31 •I I :: ::;:::L... : ;rr?: !ii -i- IU WAISWORTH Marceline, Mo., U.S.A.
