Benezet Colorado College is a place of almost unique variety and inter- est. As students, faculty, and administrators ' e seem to have come from all corners of the United States and even further. We bring to our campus a diversity of vie vpoints which makes this place a live, and sometimes hectic, college home. A college of such variegated dwellers is not easy to characterize. Many times I have heard it asked, What is our real College spirit? , as if to imply we may be lacking in this respect. On the contrary: when we look over the pages of a College year such as 1961-62 we find perhaps the best spirit of all for a college: a con- stant seeking in many directions for experiences and activities from which we learn something of the complexity of life itself. I hope the Class of 1962, reviewing the rich and animated life they have enjoyed at Colorado College, may feel a sense of pride and comradeship which will last throughout the years. . . . Louis T. For the second straight year injuries to key players before crucial games hurt C.C. ' s opportunities of having a more successful season. The absence of several interior linemen for the important Homecoming clash with Adams slowed down the Tiger attack in the game that decided the R.M.C. race. The loss of quarterback Eddie Kintz during the second half of the Mines game was keenly felt as the Tiger offense was not able to jell. The team had a winning season with an overall record of five wins, three losses, and one tie. Another high point was the fact that this year ' s squad was the first C.C. team to beat Colorado State College since 1952. The Tigers ended in a three way tie for second place vith a 2-2 record in conference competition. 139 First Rout: Art Warwick, Paul Kilbreath, Dan McGill, Ken Cairns, Norm Laurence, Gary Martin, Jacques Rivard, Jim Frolick, Pete Doyle. HOCKEY Captain Stan Moskal The C.C. icers had high hopes at the start of this year ' s hockey wars. Their reason for optimism was the return of seventeen letter- men. As it turned out, a very game, hustling crew of warriors finished the most dismal season on record. The Tigers never said die and kept up the hustle until the last whistle was blown. How- ever, hustle could not compensate for the lack of goals scored. There are many reasons why the Tiger team failed to click. First the Tigers lost the services of Paul Kilbreth and Gary Martin due to injury. The next tragedy was the loss of five key players due to grades. The team would like to thank the loyal fans who stuck by them during this disasterous season and they promise C.C. fans a better showing next season. Al- though part of this program was cut short because of extenuating circumstances the general idea was a success. The two games with Denver and the road trip to Minnesota gave the team a chance to play to- gether and to get them acquainted with some of the competition it will meet in varsity years. Coach Brennan felt the trip accomplished what it was meant for and was pleased with the split in games. 145 URKE BARRY ANTHONY CARL CAB f e ? BASKETBALL This year ' s basketball team met with bad luck from the start of the season until the last game. The black cat first crossed Coach Eastlack ' s path when six-seven cen- ter Steve Sabom was sidelined with a back injury. The big blow came at semesters when six players were declared scholas- tically ineligible including the top four sco rers and the top two rebounders. Few people gave the Tigers a chance for an- other victory after this loss but the Tigers stayed right in the title race until the last game. The final calamity occurred, again through the injury route, as a sprained ankle and a chipped bone limited the Ti- gers to eight men, including three fresh- men. The Tigers went into the final two game series needing one victory for the co- championship and two for the undisputed title. Hard luck was again a factor as the Tigers played well enough to win but dropped a 76-74 decision in the final game. As a result the cagers finished in a three- way tie for second with an 8-8 record in the conference. The makeshift squad ' s rec- ord is a fitting monument to the coaching ability of Red Eastlack and Jim Hanks. 148 Bill Burke taps in easy bucket. It has been a long arduous year filled vith trials, tribulations, deadlines, pictures, and copy. The success of all the work represented in this book is up to you. Colorado College IS a com- munity where we learn through many things, and the staff and I hope that this book is representative of some of the learning experiences which you have had this year. Through the efforts of a few (as is always the case) and capable people, this yearbook came into being. Bill Stafford, the omnipresent photogra- pher, tops the list of these people. It was only through his efforts that this book was possible at all, and as next year ' s editor wath all his experi- ence, Mr. Stafford should produce one of Colorado College ' s best yearbooks. Jane Grothaus, even after an accident with the paper cutter, willingly spent many hours organizing and typing the Cam- pus Life section. John Levis and Ned LawTcnce, though ery busy in other activities, industriously completed the Sports section. Betsy Crockett, who was one of the most efficient people on the staff, THE EDITOR Toni Larson scheduled the faculty pictures, typed copy and de- voted time to working on the other sections. The advertising section which was done by Kathy Clark, Bob Anton, and Rich Cholakian, hopefully will be as well received as last year ' s section. Owen Salisbury spent many hours indexing and typing names, and Stu Hovey did the cover design. Diane Johnston efficiently wrote the copy for Clubs and helped out in other areas where she was needed. Rod Peck handled all the business end of the year- book and spent considerable time in writing checks and sending out bills, as well as overseeing the sale of ads. Other people who helped with typing and iden- tifying and scheduling pictures were Sue Ballou, Sue Weisendanger, Margaret Kurasita, Kitty Tytler, Hadley Taylor, Kathy Berthrong, and Ellen Price. Yes, Colorado College is a community where we learn through experience and this yearbook has been one of those experiences for the staff and myself. ft! kMYER S YEARBOOK INC, 7 ..r-r ' :- ' . - iiwi fe ■w -r aisik- c .
