GERMAN To help the 145 students taking German, the department ' s assistant, Peter von Puttkamer, who is an exchange student from Germany, uses a tape recorder. All German professors here were either born in Germany or have studied extensively there. Dr. Brandt, Mrs. Elstun, and Mrs. Feyock. HISTORY Faculty in the history department are carrying out a revised program for the history majors. More independent reading, theses for outstanding senior majors, reading courses, and a language reguire- ment are the new goals. Mr. Volan, Dr. Hockman, Mr. Rudoff, Mrs. Satt, Dr. Geiger, Dr. Gilbert, Dr. Carter. MATHEMATICS Dr. E. J. Miles, CC Carnegie Visiting Profes- sor of Mathematics, came in I 957 after forty-three years at Yale. He stepped into his place as founder of a dynasty, which includes Thomas Rawles and Joseph Leech, who both studied under him. Dr. Miles, Dr. Hansman, Dr. Rusch, Dr. Rawles, and Dr. Leech.

ENGLISH Miss Amanda Ellis of the English department is now a writer in residence at CC. She has had a number of books published, as have other mem- bers of the department. In the fall of I960 she had a play produced on TV, and will soon have another shown. Mr. Racey and Mr. Van Becker are new members of the department. Dr. Racey, Mr. Ormes, Dr. Knapp, Dr. Ross, Mr. McCue, Mrs. Hershey, Mr.. Krutzke, and Mrs. Monroe. In the French department, Dr. Boyce has done a rather reverse teaching stint. Instead of the teaching of French to Americans, he taught Eng- lish to Parisians in 1956-57. Mr. Miller, Mr. Von Puttkamer, Mrs. Secrist, Dr. Boyce, and Mr. Madruga. GEOLOGY Renovation of many of the geology classrooms brought better eguipment to the students. A con- vention of the National Geographical Society of America, which 4,000 geologists attended, was held in Denver in the fall. Advanced geology stu- dents were invited to attend. Mr. Lewis, Mr. Osborne, visiting lecturer, Dr. Pearl Fischer, and Dr. Grose. Dr.

ROTC The ROTC department at CC is working to- ward two goals — to commission a minimum of twenty-fiv e cadets in the U. S. Army Reserve each year and to give military training to all freshman and sophomore men during their basic course. Sfc. Petre, Sfc. Penton, Mr. Lang, M Sgt. Wadkins, Maj. Johnson, Capt. Pistone, M Sgt. Seymour, Mrs. L. A. Barefield, Col. Decker. MUSIC The music department has purchased a rather unusual instrument — a harpsichord. It is one of the largest in this area, and was made in Germany. It is approximately ten years old. Mr. Jenkins, Dr. Seay, Mr. Gamer, Dr. Lanner, Mr. Aus- tin, Dr. Juhas. PHILOSOPHY Enrollment in the philosophy courses has jumped considerably in the past few years, showing that the student is willing to be encouraged to think. Dr. Gray has recently published a book, The War- riors. Dr. Maue, Miss Cauvel, Dr. Gray, Rev. Jepson.
