COLORADO COLLEGE LIBRARY COLORADO SPRINGS. COLORADO ' ix ' - m fflOTEW! ■ THE PRESIDENT Since 1955 when Dr. Louis T. Benezet came to CC as president, the campus has gained nationwide recognition. The multimillion dollar building program introduced just a short time ago by Dr. Benezet is well on its way to becoming a reality. Some of the achievements of Colorado College under Dr. Benezet are the naming of CC as one of the fifty outstanding small colleges in the country by Time magazine, and the invitation by General Electric to participate in the College Bowl and the resulting scholarships by GE. Locally, Dr. Benezet has been elected chairman of the Community Chest, and one of the local radio sta- tions designated a Sunday last fall as Dr. Louis T. Benezet Day. Dr. Benezet enthusiastically and gratefully accepts a science building from the Olin Foundation late in the spring of I960. The years that you are living in college are full of new emphasis upon the seriousness of learn- ing. College students today are being bom- barded with more books, more scientific de- vices, more highly trained and better paid pro- fessors, more lectures, symposiums, and other intellectual sideshows than ever before. It can- not help but make learning seem more impor- tant. Yet when we have completed the process of infusing college education with greater au- thority, shall we also have produced warm hu- man beings with a desire to live and work to- gether? The College yearbook is one of the elements in a college experience that ought to help you remember the human side of education. For despite all the important lessons, you will recall your professors, fellow-students and the events of your College life either as a sort of statistical background or else as warm, flesh-and-blood memories of four years ' that helped shape your life. I think it is important that we remember our College days in this way. Here then will be your Nugget; take it with you in your many- moves throughout life and let it help you remember. . . . Louis T. Benezet President and Mrs. Benezet enjoy the company of Gerry Carle, Athletic Director, at a hockey game. DEAN BUSINESS MANAGER VICE-PRESIDENT Lloyd E. Worner Robert W. Broughton Robert W. ' ' - ' • :; ' _ ' ■■-. - l ' y After two weeks of practice, the CC football team, includ- ing ten junior college transfers, started out their I960 season by meeting highly touted Washburn University of Topeka, Kanas. For the second year in a row we beat them by the margin of a field goal. The next two games the Tigers easily overpowered their opponents, St. Mary ' s of the Plains and Ft. Hays. Disaster followed thereafter. In the traditional rivalry with Colorado Mines, the Tigers had a couple of bad breaks that cost them the game. The following week against Colorado State again bad luck struck. Untimely penalties cost CC a victory and to make matters worse, top ground gainer Pete Pleasant suf- fered a broken ankle. The string of bad luck reached its peak at Idaho State. On the opening kickoff Scott Tippin suffered a broken back which just gave an indication of the things to come. Idaho State could do no wrong and CC could do no right as the score showed only too well. The following week was Homecoming and Coach Carle had to face Western State with a sadly depleted sguad. The spirit of Homecoming, however, was instilled into the team and they turned in a terrific defensive show against Western State in a snowstorm to take the win, cheered on by the staunchest, coldest fans a team could ever have. Adams State beat CC in a rugged game with the Tigers fighting all the way. In the final game against highly favored New Mexico Highlands, the Tigers went into the final five minutes trailing 34-12. In those minutes the Tigers staged a tremendous rally only to have it fall short by two points. The CC football team wishes to thank the student body for its fine support. When playing football under Coach Carle and his staff, there is a lot learned out on the field besides football. It takes a great coach to bring a team back from a 77-8 loss and fire them up for another game, but he did. For this and the things he taught us, we thank him. Coach Frasca ' s sophomore dominated team closed the 1960-61 Hockey season with five wins and twenty defeats. A combination of injury and scholastic trouble was a strong contributing factor to Tiger defeats. De- fenseless C.C. goalies, Norm Lawrence and Pete Doyle faced an average of 40 shots on goal a game while the Beng ' e offense shot less and scored less the four goals a game. With the loss of only three graduating seniors — Boychuk, Gee, and Goodacre — Tiger potential will for next season be high. 131 Tiger defense forms againsf Denver. ROCKY MT. CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS The Tigers this year wrapped up the first conference championship since 1945. This was the result of unselfish teamwork and a tremendous amount of desire on the part of the players. Perhaps there were other teams in the conference wit h as good or possibly better material but lacking in the unity so essential for success in the game of Basketball. This feeling of unity was, I feel, the strongest ingredient of our team this year. The support our team received this year was very gratifying and we of the team are very grateful for this backing by our student body. I hope this spirit will prevail through- out all Colorado College athletics and possibly carry the team next year to another cham- pionship. Our shutters have been clicked 2000 times, 96 ounces of rubber cement have been smeared, and $ I 1 ,000 have been spent. We shall probably never really know to what ex- tent we have succeeded in giving to CC the year- book that was conceived of at this time last year. This NUGGET wou ' d never have been possible in any form without the dedicated effort of the small efficient staff. The work of our photogra- pher, Bill Stafford, merits particular commenda- tion. Margaret Kurashita ' s long hours in the phone booth got the book out on time. Rod Peck ' s bur- den was indeed heavy and well carried. The job of the organizations fell to Isabel Williams and with it the identification of over I 000 people, well done. This year ' s second in command, Anne Wil- son, proved invaluable as she gained another year ' s experience. Beyond the staff the advice of the Publications Board and the patience of Mr. Jones is greatly appreciated. To Stewart ' s Photos tireless hours behind the enlargers and developing tanks we are indebted. To all these people and many more we the stu- dents of Colorado College owe our thanks. The production of a yearbook is an experience which affords deep satisfaction. I hope that the student body as a whole will hold some of this satisfaction in reviewing 1960-61 through the pages of this NUGGET. . . .
