Pike and an expedi- tion sent by President Thomas -leffersoni to explore the upper Mississippi region of the Louisiana Purchase. In l8l9 Major S. H. Long led a party to the top of the mountain and for the first time saw the distant peaks and the vast sweep of plains visible from its summit. ln latter years Pikes Peaks fame was established by the westward moving pioneers in their slogans Pikes Peak or Bust. Some reached their goal and some turned back eastward admitting Busted by Gosh, but to the disappointed as well as to the success- ful the mountain remained a symbol of strength K 'Today, The Peak is accessible on horseback, by cog-railroad or by the highway ascending to 14,1 I0 feet from Colorado Springs which rests at its foot. 5 Each year visitors to the region, residents of the area and Colorado College students rediscover the beauty, magnificence and grandeur of Pikes Peak.
