The beginning of the end. For dear old irosh class. ' If we ' d only been organized! September, 1940, will prove to be an important month in the history of Colorado College. National defense was the slogan of all and the forming of a campus guard was one of our first activities in behalf of National defense. Little did we dream, however, that within a month we would be compelled to register for a draft. Yes, just as we had returned to school, war had returned to permeate our thoughts and activities. Squads, right! [13]

Theta pledges are happy! Most of us think that school starts with rush week. It does, officially, but for some there is no summer vacation. Long before any of us returned there was much preliminary work to be done in the office. Finally, when we did get here we spent our time either rushing people off their feet or being rushed off ours. Little time to think during rush week until we knocked off long enough for the first all-school picnic, a tradition begun by Prexy Pat Fitzgerald. Registration closed this first hectic week of school. Pledge night brought happiness to many (both rushees and actives), as can be seen in the picture above. Soon, however, the freshmen began to find life a little harder. The frosh-soph fight was not only rough, but lost by them. And upper-classmen got their arms sore swinging in the weekly belt lines. Politics soon took their place on the campus — student elections. A new system apparently did away with combines. The return of an old and traditional group — the Growlers — brought with it the old and tradi- tional Tiger Spirit which was so important in all our football victories.
