Colonial Hills Christian School is blessed with a man who is a master at this special art. He accepts students — with all their problems and promise — and helps them to find God's purpose in their lives. This man cares what happens to every student, whether they be elementary or high school. He extends fair and equal treatment to all. As President of our School Board, his actions have won him the love and respect of all. He exercises his authority with gentleness and consideration. He is present at many athletic events supporting the team. When spiritual needs arise, he is there to counsel and pray with individual students. It is easy to see why he is loved by the entire student body. His life's verse is I Peter 7. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried w ith fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. By observing his life and his impact on our lives, we understand how the trial of his faith results in praise, honor, and glory to our Lord Jesus Christ. We praise and thank God for sending us a man whose faith has been tried and found strong. You can see the love of God through him. He has a never ending smile that gives us students a feeling of love and accept- ance. Your graciousness, gentleness, and consideration have been felt by every student, thus we dedicate the 1980 Encounter to you: 8 PASTOR OLLIE GOAD 9 JW-' _ Civil Engineer — Even as the architect of a bridge is the civil engineer, the architect of the student's education is his teacher. The civil engineer draws a blueprint from which a bridge is built. Through the planning of a teacher, the student learns skills which will later make him a useful member of society. 10 School Board Have you ever wondered just who is in charge of making the rules and approving major activities of the school? Well, it is a group of men who are all from Colonial Hills Baptist Church. They are responsible for helping the school administration decide on what is best for the school. And this popular group of men is more commonly known as the Board. 12 Our Favorite Prince-A-Pal The 1979-80 school year brought many changes, one of which was a new principal. Dr. Samuel Warren. Dr. Warren was born in Jacksonville, Fla. He graduated from Hampden Dubose in Florida and attended Houghton College in New York. He received his Bachelor’s of Art and Master's of Art from State University of New York at Albany. From there he went to Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. Dr. Warren is married and has six children, all who attend Colonial Hills. Dr. Warren has brought with him many new ideas and principles which are helping to better our school. We all have come to know and respect this cheery man who is in fact — OUR FAVORITE PRINCE-A-PAL! 13 First row: Mr. Barber. Mrs. Barber. Mrs. Beck. Mr. Calhoun. Second row: Mr. Caskey. It seemed that we had to face more than most other graduating seniors. We were confronted with life shaping decisions. COLLEGE — we were not really sure if we wanted to go and if we did. where? MARRIAGE — did we want to get married? If so. when and how did this affect college plans. Suddenly our whole future had come face to face with us and we were now responsible for it. No longer would our parents and teachers be there to tell us what to do and how to do it. We now had attained the long awaited independence and there was much more to it than we had ever imagined. Those decisions had to be made at a time when our international affairs were in much turmoil: the holding of American citizens in Iran, the invasion of Afghanistan by Russia, confusion concerning the summer Olympics in Moscow: all these events had us wondering what state our nation would be in when we were finally able to pursue our future and our goals. 1980 was also an election year: who would be our next president: Carter. Reagan. Kennedy. Bush, or Baker? Many of the issues the candidates were talking about affected us. the new generation, more than our elders: E.R.A.. the draft, inflation and energy to mention the obvious. It was up to us to see we had a hand in our future. We had grown up in the shadow of Watergate. We learned not to take people at face value. The future of our country was in our hands. We wanted to know all about the person we would elect to run our nation. But through all our decisions we still had our friends, teachers, and parents to help us through. Yet most of all. we knew we would always have God to rely on and be there, not only when we needed help, but each and every moment of our lives. — Cindi Inglett Joel Thomas Marilyn Warren Mary Beth Tilghman Sherri West Darold Toney Susan White Dan Waller Debbie Wright 54 Rams to the Polls Who would you vote for in the Presidential election? a) Reagan 64% b) Ford 13% c) Asimov 8% d) Carter 5% Joel Timothy Thomas Rom. 13:1-7 Basketball 9.11. Our returning players included: Claude Brown, a third year player, who started last year as guard: Jeff Doris, a guard; Troy Patterson, a guard: and Philip Boalch, a forward. Our new hopefuls included: Hal Calhoun, who came to us from Old National as our point guard; Robert Aldridge, a forward; Jay Pin- holster, a guard; Mike Hamby, a forward; Walter Vaughn, a forward; Jeff Pierce, a guard; Chris Bogan, a guard; and Todd Calhoun, a guard. These twelve individuals had to work as a team and learn that each one had a responsibility to themselves and to the other players. They had to learn that an effective, well balanced team had players who would do their share of shooting, dribbling, passing, rebounding, and defending and that as a team they could win. We had trouble in this area in the early part of the season. The problem was not completely resolved: there were some who needed to shoot more, perfect their dribbling, rebound more intensely, but there was some improvement and that was what we were after. We ended our season with ten wins and ten losses. Many of us had goals for this year, some of which were reached and others ended only in dreams. So now we wait for next year and learn by our mistakes. Most of the team will be back next year and perhaps a few of these dreams will materialize. To all the players this is my last comment: Total concentration and strong willed determination will produce a winner; size will not. To all the fans: Thank you for your support this season. Coach’s Comments The JV Girls started off the season at a very slow pace, but after playing two games we started playing very well. The JV Girls played six Region games with three wins and three losses. We placed second in our Region. I feel that the reason we played better the last part of the season was because of the spirit and knowledge we gained during the season. I thoroughly enjoyed coaching this group of superb athletes. The squad was made up of four seniors, three of them returning from last season, three juniors, and five sophomores. Only three had any varsity experience. Our hopes were built on the potential of our new team members. As practice began, excitement was high and the potential to be a fine team was there. Our season opened with a big victory over Marietta 56-50. Three more rapid wins caused us to lose sight of our inexpe- rience and lack of team unity. For the next several weeks, after playing only average ball, the coaches and team real- ized that there was a lot of hard work ahead. Briefly in early January, there were several more resound- ing victories and hopes were ignited for the playoffs. The end of January brought many close, heartstopping losses. Our tournament aspirations never materialized and the Rams had to rest on their efforts and look toward next year. Coach Caskey Coach Kinsey Varsity Girls Basketball Three Is Beautiful! Their season began with an encouraging victory over the Marietta Eagles. The defeats suffered were all within a few points, however the victories were smashing as well as rewarding. Each player was outstanding in her own special wray; combining five special talents and placing them on the court, the Lady Rams excelled with teamwork that led the girls into the Region tournaments. Struggling through the championship game with Athens, the girls real- ized that much work needed to be done before moving on to the State tournaments. Placing sec- ond in Regions, the Lady Rams had to play Mt. Vernon, the first place team of the southern region. Slowly but surely the team built enough steam to play good ball the second half of the game, but not good enough to claim a victory. Defeating Clayton in the consolation game resulted in the girls placing third in state. With hard work and determination, the Lady Rams can again look forward to a winning season next year. Coming off a 1-7 record in 1978. the Rams knew better days were in order. With two coaches to start this season and 22 young men working under the hot August sun. the season began. Squad, almost evenly balanced, with Sophomores. Juniors, and Seniors, drilled hard and often on the field and in the classroom. New players at new positions kept the team busy and making adjustments almost daily. Both coaches and players were dedicated to paying the price it would take to be winners. An injury free season would have made our season less complicated; but injuries struck in the very first game. As the season progressed, the toll mounted. At one time there were six starting players sidelined. The Rams were truly tested as men and they did well to hold together. The season started with a tie and then a victory. From there we went on to three wins and four losses to end up 4-4-1 for the year. There was no cham- pionship for us but the effort and learning was evident. A .500 season is vastly superior to a 1-7 record no matter how you look at it. Praise God from whom all blessings flow. The season was His. The Rams played to the Lord. We thank Him for all He did in us and through us. Praise His Wonderful Name. Rams Opponents Gilead 6 6 Forest Park 32 0 Mt. Handing a strong Mt. Vernon team a 2-0 defeat, the girls stunned the G.C.A.A. confer- ence teams with their explosive ability. The league teams soon began to realize that the Lady Rams meant business. Excitement mounted as the girls plucked the Athens Eagles in two quick games. The thrill of it all came when the Stone Mountain Crusaders trembled under the mighty blow of the Lady Rams. Through hard work, much determina- tion, and teamwork, the girls became the 1979 State Volleyball Champs. Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell in unity” Psalms 133:1. Special thanks go to Mrs. Kreimann for her patience in offi- ciating and also to the JV Cheerleaders for their support. Softball Almost — But Not Quite! The Lady Rams fought hard hut they just quite did not make it. The season ended with an 8-2 record. With the complete team returning. CHCS is looking for a superior team during the 1980 season. The Homecoming theme was Across the Years With Christ. The individual themes were: “Maturing Across the Years” — Seniors, Achieving Across the Years — Juniors, “Excelling Across the Years” Sophomores, and Expanding Across the Years” — Freshmen. The Sophomore float won first place with the Freshman float running a close second. The climax of the evening was the crowning of the 1980 Homecoming Queen, Debbie Stroup, by last year’s Homecoming Queen, Christine Frangoudakis. The half-time activities also included the presentation of some of our past Homecoming Queens, and a selection of songs by our band and chorus. Then, the game was continued with the Colonial Hills Rams shutting out the Lake City Suns. 101 Love Makes the World Go Round Once again the Senior High Valen- line Banquet was held at the Holiday Inn South. The theme was “Love Makes the World Go Round. Our queen and king for this year were Jill Shelley and Scott Mayson. The Son- light Singers entertained with songs and gave their testimonies. Thank you, Sophomore Class, it was a won- derful banquet! Queen: [ill Shelley. King: Scott Mayson 104 Thanksgiving Program 106 In past years, the kindergarten through the third grades have given us true to life and meaningful Thanksgiving programs and this year was no exception. The program consisted of skits, poems, and songs. This program really showed how much we have to thank God for and was a blessing to us all. 107 Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Miss Pennington produced a wonderful Christmas pro- gram this year, assisted by the students from the fourth grade through the sixth grade. This program centered around a small star named Twinkle, who was chosen by God to shine over Bethlehem on the night of the birth of Christ. Through this program we learned that even though we seem small and have little abilities, we can do God's work if we simply rely on him instead of on our own power. 108 High School Chorus Chorus Officers: Miss Pennington. Lonny Britt. Beth Pritch- ett. Candy Talton. Teefie Bullard. Tracy Murdock. The Chorus this year was an exciting experience for all its members. Not only was it larger, but the parts were more balanced. Through the leadership of Miss Barbara Pennington, the Chorus grew to be a respected organiza- tion in our school. A person looking at one of the school newspapers this year could never discern all the confusion behind the scenes. The Ram- page staff went through several changes this year. These included adding a permanent Elementary Paper to their other publication and gaining a new advisor. Although this is Mrs. Talton’s first year working on the paper, she and her staff have done a very good job of publishing the school newspapers on time. All should thank the staff for their hard work. Left to right: Sonya Rominger. Caroline Bueckert. Mrs. Talton. Debbie Wright. Row 1: Jim Shrider — sports editor photogra- pher. Many new materials are constantly being added to the present collections to provideas much information and enjoyment to the students as possible. The artistic talents of many students are shown as they participate in the new Art Club. Mr. Heiple assists them as they use their talent to help the Ram- page and the Encounter, and as they send their work to the Fine Arts Festival. Who knows? Maybe we will end up with another Michelangelo. 127 Political Affairs Club Many new and exciting things have happened at CHCS this year, one of them being the formation of the Political Affairs Club (PAC). The members of PAC meet with their sponsor, Mr. Art Vandenburg, to dis- cuss the current happenings in our government. Although they can not solve the world's problems, they are learning that they need to show some concern and take part in our nation's government by voting and by writing to their Congressman. Guidance Counselor Mrs. Jackie Kreimann This year Colonial Hills has added to their staff a new position called a guidance counselor. The talented person that received this job has been at Colonial Hills for many years. Our counselor is Mrs. Jackie Kreimann. She helps everyone in many ways, from choosing which classes to take to instructing whole classes on different fundraising ideas. New students require her assistance and so does the administration. Mrs. Kreimann helps the Seniors to under- stand their SAT and ACT scores and advises them on col- lege. Students are not the only ones that need Mrs. Kreim- ann, even the teachers need her tender loving care. Thank you, Mrs. Kreimann, for a job well done! 129 130 We Got It Together 131 As a result of many laborious hours spent with tedious and frenzied moments, the staff of this pub- lication would like to dedicate this page to the acknowledgement of those who aided their assistance to this book. He was barely 11 years old when he was ushered into eternity. He accepted Christ when he was 8 years old. His third grade teacher. Mrs. Chupp, led him to the Lord. When asked how he knew he had been saved, he readily responded, Jesus told me so, meaning in His Word. Matt was a popular member of the fifth grade class. Thi boys and girls enjoyed his friendly manner and cheerfi disposition. His keen sense of humor was a source enjoyment when the class needed a break from scho work. He was also a good student. He was a normal active boy. His interest in sporti outstanding, and he learned good sportsmanship ei life. He was always fair in games he participated in. Occasionally, somebody will say. Chris loved the Lord, the Bible, people, and sports. We remember his enthusiasm in the kickball games. Most of all we remember Chris being saved in Chapel, and how he would often read the Bible instead of a library book. His life was a real testimony and blessing to our Fourth Grade Class. j ’• ' i jw ?.
