Through his efforts and inspira¬ tion, he has helped us to develop our character and to accept the responsibilities of adulthood. He has continually shown patience and understanding in the devel¬ opment and growth of our school --Colonial Heights High. W)e Dedicate OmniSus ’62 3o . . . Mr. Reade and Mrs. Grubbs, to whom we express our appreciation for the guidance given our class. We also dedicate our annual to our sponsor,Mrs.Maxine Grubbs. Through her help in both our jun¬ ior and senior years we have ac¬ quired the desire and the ability to work together as a class and not as individuals. Her encour¬ agement has helped us to gain a sense of responsibility toward our school, community, and fel¬ low students. This excellent yearbook is another milestone in the history of Colonial Heights High School. It is concrete evidence of your ability to achieve the goal you set five years ago, and it ill¬ ustrates what canbeaccomplished when students and faculty members work to¬ gether. This is a volume that you will treasure for many years, and in the distant future, it will bring you many happy memories of your school days when you glimpse the pictures of the many friends you had among both students and faculty. May your ability to accomplish the goal you have set continue when you go out into the world. My sincere wishes for your success and happiness go with you. Senior Class History When the present Senior Class started school, the majority of us began together. Thirty-seven members of the original class have remained together since the first grade;through the years, some members have been transferred to this school. There are now eighty-seven members of the first graduating class at Colonial Heights High School. 20 Senior Class The teachers who began these pupils on their school careers were Miss Jean Pritchet, who is now Mrs. Jean Williams; Miss Joy Dishman, who is now Mrs. Joy John¬ son; and Mrs. Ethel McGhee. Our first principal was Miss Flora M. Hill, whom we will always rememb er. Henry Hamilton Barbour Arthur John Barnes James Keith Beazley Jimmy Lester Bell Andrea Cris Berkley Floyd Carson Bishop Joseph Austin Blanks Diana Leigh Boisseau 21 We spent five memorable years at what is now Flora M. Hill Elementary School. In the sixth grade we became members of the student body of what was then the new Colonial Heights Elemen¬ tary School, which was destined to become our beloved Colonial Heights High School. At that time our principal was Mr. W. W. Reade, and our assistant principal was Mr. M. P. Alley. Now we have the same principal, but we have a new assistant principal, Mr. J. D. Smith. Norman Douglas Britt Carol Esther Bryant Wallace Ben Bunker Wayne Franklin Burton Joe Bailey Bush Bettie Jeanne Carter Charles Mason C arter Betty Sue Childress 22 Judith Gail Clark Carol Craft Suzanne Cecilia Crumpler Pauline Lavana Dimirack Sidney Ricks Cook Iva Lee Crocker Mary Ann Davis Katherine Frances Eley The first year our class was in this school, there was a large group above us; however, fate stepped in and some members of this group went to Petersburg High School, whereas other mem¬ bers went to Thomas Dale High School. Thus we became the group that eventually would be the first graduating class. Senior Class 23 John William Elko Sandra Anne Emory Thomas Shelton Florence Karen Ann Frank Danny Terane Frymire Johnnie Dale Furman Katherine Inglis Goodwyn Phyllis Jean Greenwell At first many of us were resentful because we were not allowed to attend Petersburg or Thomas Dale High Schools. Attending one of these schools was to us a sign of growing-up, and being sixth graders we were very anxious to be considered mature. At the time we did not realize what a wonderful opportunity had been given to us. Since we were the highest class, we were the first in every¬ thing; we have set tne goals and standards for this school. 24 Senior Class Finally we began to accept the fact that we would all go to Colonial Heights High School until graduation, and we began to work to make our school one of which we can be proud. As we began to work and to mature, changes were made. We began to change classes for the first time, to have athletic events, to have a band, and to have dances and parties at school. But more im¬ portant than all of these things, we began to realize how lucky we were to be members of the first graduating class at Colonial Heights High School. Donald Randolf Grimes Linda Gayle Harris Donald Richard Harris Bruce Wayne Hirn Melvin Hershell Hall Rose Mary Harris James Vernon Henderson Robert Gresham Howlett 25 Senior Class Through the years the first graduating class has experienced many memorable events. Being the highest class all the way through school, we have been the first in everything; and we have paved the way for other potential seniors. Being the first in everything has been a unique experience; it has been fun--but it has required much co-operation and organization. William Alexander Lucie Ann Gregory Maroney Emma Ruth Norton Martha Diane Lunsford Anthony Joseph Michalek Jr. Roger Nugent Mary Lena Overton Ernest Edward Ozmore 26 Martha Ellen James Janet Louis Lancaster Keith LaVern Lee Clarence Alton Lee Diana Dean Lemke Richard Edmond Levy Thomas Melvin Lewis Bobby Lee Lindsev In the spring during our sophomore year, we made a very im¬ portant decision and asked Mrs. Maxine Grubbs to become our sponsor; and--to our good fortune--she accepted. She, surely, has been the inspiration of our class, and has helped us in every possible way. We then began to organize ana to elect our class officers. They were: Doris Marie Smith, president; Ben Bunker, vice-president; Charlotte Stoss, secretary; Iva Lee Crocker, treasurer; and Martha Ann Tench, Mary Ann Davis, and Charles Carter were elected members of the executive board. These people served as the governing body of our class until the spring of our junior year. JONES MEMOR aL LLkAi.y During our junior year we passed many important milestones: we selected our class rings; started our yearbook, Omnibus 61 : started the Miss Colonial Heights Pageant ; had our first ring dance--and many other things. Patricia Anne Paschall Michelle Lacy Pollard Janice Marie Pond William Jennings Porter Melvin Harry Rager Sandra Paige Rosemond Diana McLean Ruxton Carolyn Marie Saunders 28 Pauline Mae Sheffield Doris Marie Smith Charles Eddie Slaughter Harry Fritz Smith Thomas Edward Spain Kenneth Lee Spilker James Lollies Spicer Charlotte Marie Anne Stoss Now at last after years of work we have reached our senior year, and we still have Mrs. Maxine Grubbs as our sponsor. Our class officers are: Carol Bryant, president; Jimmy Spicer, vice- president; Janet Lancaster, secretary; Iva Lee Crocker, treas¬ urer; with Judy Clark, Ben Bunker, June Tomlin, and Ernie Oz- more as members of the executive board. Senior Class 29 As our class has grown, so has our school. We now have teams in all high school sports, various clubs to meet the interests of all, a great band, spirited cheerleaders and majorettes, and many other important accomplishments all of which the present Senior Class has helped to organize. But more important than all of these things, we have a good education which will help to make us the kind of poeple our school will be proud to have as their alumni. Bonnie Lee Tatum Meredith Lucille Tatum Martha Ann Tench Alfred Sterling Thomas Marian Clarie Titmus Thomas Gordon Vaughan June Kathleen Tomlin Peggy Ann Ward 30 Kenneth Dean Wawner Donald Evan Wells David Allen Williams Barbara Jean Wells Richard James Wiederman John Bruce Woodruff Darrell Lonnie Wyatt Erick Ealk Yarchin Thus we, the first graduating class at Colonial Heights High School, have led the way in every area. We have worked hard, and we have much to show for our efforts. We have left behind to our school a tradition for all the classes coming after us to live up to and follow. We leave with many treasured experiences and high goals for our future. Senior Class 31 junior Class off icers President . . . Vice-President Treasurer. . . Secretary . . .
