I 1 I % I I % $ $ ii ; ' $ $ l i Most of the students in our school regard Mr. .Bickell, principal here since- 1958 when the school first opened, with great awe and respect. However, not many think of him in any other oapacity, so, we thought that it would be only fitting to pay tribute to him in this 1962-63 edition of Maroon and Gold. Mr. Bickell was enrolled in public school in Red Deer, but completed his high school training at Central here in Calgary. He studied for his B.A. degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. After completing his courses there, Mr. Bickell went to Southern California where he reoeived his Master Degree in Scienoe and Education. Mr. Bickell has a commendable war record. He met disappointment in not being allowed to go overseas because the military staff valued his educational background and teaching ability in training new recruits. When the war ended Mr. Bickell had obtained the rank of major. Our principal has had a long teaching career. He began teaching when he was eighteen and has now been teaching forty years as of June 3rd. He has been a principal in Calgary since one year after the war and has been principal here at Colonel Irvine for six years. Besides his teaching career, Mr. Bickell, who has been married thirty-two years, has: raised a son David and a daughter, Bonnie. He- also conducted in-service-training for Public School Board teachers for three years, in the use of Audio-Visual Aids. The staff and students of Colonel Irvine would like to congratulate Mr. Bickell on his forty successful years of teaching and wish him many I % % W more in the future,

The 1963 Edition of the Maroon and Gold is Proudly Dedicated to Mr. L. KOPER Colonel Irvine ' s hardworking industrial arts instructor, Mr. Koper, has been at the school six years, since its ' beginning in 1957, and during that time has become a friend and advisor to every student with whom he has come in contact. Mr. Koper, able vice-principal of our school, is also the teacher sponsor of the Safety Patrol, a very necessary and worthwhile organization. Previously Mr. Koper has been in charge of school supplies, a large undertaking, and this year he was the co-ordinator of yearbook production, a position which he filled exceptionally well. To Mr. Koper we owe thanks for the many picture frames, showcases, trophies and other similar articles around the school. These were all constructed by boys in the shop under his capable supervision. We feel, as I am sure you do, that Colonel Irvine would be at a loss without Mr. Koper and to show our gratitude for his service, we proudly dedicate this year ' s Maroon and Gold to him. 4
