, Mondays N. Sideris Wake up, said the mother in a tone very mild. Wah? stammered the sleepy-headed child. Another day ofjoy and funf' A Said the mother to her son. Oh, Mother, how can you be so cruel? That's no way to talk of school! At the bus stop, the mother smiled At her tussle-headed child. The sight of the bus coming near Did nothing to increase his cheer. She said to him, Have a fun day,', H And he replied, On a Monday? LOST HONESTY Michelle Cohen The earth turns round and round, As do the hands of the clock, And the cycles of life. Man was born with honesty, He labored in the fields and fallow, As handsome and tall as his harvests, He was a beautiful being to behold. Man grew and grew, And fashioned weapons for a battle, Took on the duties of a knight, And fought bitterly with each other. Still some men were righteous, And pleaded with the others to stop, But the men kept on, Destroying themselves. In the next turn of life, Honesty in its entirety was forgotten One honest man - one honest man was left, Until he, too, fell. . HAIKU Vikki Goodrich GREAT EXPECTATIONS a book of deceitfulness melts the hearts of all. Jason Snow Gina DeSimone Jason Snow was an unusually large Forest Ranger. In the winter he traveled through Michigan helping settlers get through the snow. Sometimes the snow got up to six feet, but being ten feet tall it didn't bother ole Jason Snow. When Jason got hungry he'd reach up into a tree for ten or eleven squirrels. Sometimes he'd wrestle a bear. One winter there was a long snowstrom and by the time it ended the snow was up to Jason's shoulders. Jason packed up his bags and set out to help snow- bound travelers. He noticed a drift of snow near the edge ofa cliff so he started digging up a covered wagon. Finally he had dug out the whole wagon and out jumped a dog. The dog jumped on Jason forcing him to step off of the cliff. Jason and the dog rolled down the cliff gathering snow as they rolled along. Towards the bottom of the cliff all you could see was a gigantic snowball. That was the last anybody ever saw of Jason Snow, or the dog. ? -'N Galaxy The stars twinkled merrily to their mentor, the moon, in a never-ending dance of stately constellations and whirling comets ..... Round and round ..... More and more ..... till the sky was hidden behind a luminous blanket of cold light. Tired ..... the stars and moon retire, hiding from the peeping rays of the sun on the horizon, pink, orange, blending, leaping in silent joy of life to the now frosty ground ...... Warming it .... beginning the new day. ' Dora Edelson 47

School Anna Blitzstein School is something the county sends you to. School is somewhere where you learn a lot. School is somewhere where you have a mid-morning break. Budtifonly takes ten minutes everyday. School is somewhere you do compositions. School is somewhere where you hold a position. School is somewhere where work is hard. And I sent Mr. Wray a Hannukah card. Lee's Courgars are the best. They are better than the rest. When there is a fire atlSCh001, Some are scared and some are cool. Miss Balmer is tall but Mr. Nuzacci is small. School ties you up just like a shell. Ihave to go now cause there goes the bell. Eddie Lattner HAIKU Fireflies in the night A silent journey by light So small yet so bright. My Country Nicki Sideris Youthful child of Europe, Like an acorn turned to tree, The United States of America, All those things are we. Though not always so united And not always filled with glee, We're here because our ancestors Wanted to be free. Freedom from injustice And the chains of tyranny Were what our brave forefathers Did so wish to flee. Of what our country means, Very few can agree. Even I'm not very sure Of what my country means to me. When Ihear those patriotic speeches, I turn green like the sea. Yet without my blessed country, I know not where I would be. 46 Ben Roberts Kim Barr Way up north in Alaska around the early l900's, there lived a prospector who was looking for gold. His name was Ben Roberts. Every morning he went up to a nearby lake to get some breakfast. He'd just hook his axe under the edge of ice, give one or two tug and a whole cover of ice would come off in his harid Then Ben would reach into the lake, take out a lo of 'd fish, and replace the top. Ben was neat and he dr like to leave things lying around. Ss S. n't He'd cook the fish, then he would go out to look for gold. One time, on top of a hill, he discoverfld a whole bunch of gold. Some of the chucks were soj big that even Ben couldn't carry them. He decided to roll them down the mountain to his house at the bottom. He fetched the biggest one and heaved it out over the edge. But he heaved a little too hard cause the bould- er just sailed through the air never once touching the ground. Ben noted it was going south, so he raced down to the United States and sure enough, he saw that boulder commin' straight for him. Ben dodged it and it sank almost a mile into the ground and rolled a long way before it stopped. That's how we got Grand Canyon. I Another time, when Ben was out, he started t a chill, and wished that he had a nice fur jacketflvith the get him. Suddenly a polar bear jumped out and tried to eat Ben. Ben grabbed that polar bear by his shoulders and gave a hard yank. The bear's soft white skin came off in his hands. Ben wrapped it around himself and said, Sorry'b011'fthat Mr. Bear, and he chuckl ed. The bear just said, Ahh, forget it, it was too hot anyway. So Ben went home and went to bed. I Western Gunslinger 1 Michelle C hen If I could be a western gunslinger I would be Jesse James. Even though he deceived the law, he was also humorous, kind, and wise. Jesse James liked to help people, as he helped the widow by giving her money to pay her rent. Later he got the money back by robbing the rent collector. Wouldn't it be fun to help people and lose nothing? Jesse James apprecihted jokes, and so do I. Ilike to invent practical jokes a nd the like, though I don't play them as often as Jesse James did. . He finally met a woman who was twice as big as he was and also weighted twice as much as he did. Her name was Hilda. She told Jake that if he could lift more than she could, she would marry him, but if she lifted more, Jake would have to be her servant. Jake quickly agreed and tried to think of something they could lift. They started out. at Macy's Depart- ment Store. They had no trouble lifting it. They had lifted everything in New York City before a police- man saw them. He arrested them for vandalizing property. After they were caught, they spent several months in jail.
