Benny Gumbates David Delmar Benny Gumbates, the fisherman, was truly a man of great strength and stature. The Atlantic Ocean was his fishing hole and his swimming pool. Occasionally, he would step over to the Great Lakes for a footbath. He started each day by swimming a few laps across the Atlantic. Just for recreation, he would rope a couple of whales, place a foot on each whale's back, and have an exciting chariot ride across the deep blue sea. He had caught and conquered many demons in the dark waters off the coast: squid, octopus, and ser- pents. The real challenge came when he ran into the great white shark Jowls.', Jowls had just attacked the steamship, Queen Mary, and was viciously ramming her bow with his snout. Stop that , roared Benny, in a voice that could be heard in Cleveland, Ohio. Make me, snarled the irate shark, as he made a giant tidal wave with his tail. Benny ignored the rushing water, and carefully picked up the steamship, and placed it in a safe part of the ocean. All the passengers cheered as Benny plucked Jow1s teeth from his enormous ugly mouth. That was the end of Jowls terrorizing the Atlantic for awhile. He flapped his tail one last ripple and swam to the floor of the ocean to grow a new set of teeth. My Brag Elayne Kriss My name is Ezekiel Clampet, Zeke for short. In the Kentucky wilderness where I live there are so many gol durn turkeys that there's not enough room for all of them to fly at once. Ican shoot all of their feathers clean off and shoot them back on again, I can. I can wrestle at least ten alligators at a time, mebbe twenty. After that, am I tired? No siree! When I'm done with them there 'gators, I run thirty miles to my cabin so fast I git there an hour before I started. Porcupine wrestling is my favorite. Why, I can wrestle with that old porcupine for hours on end and never get stuck with a quill. Q But jumpin' is the thing I do best. I reckon there ain't nobody in Greenmeadow County what can out- jump me. I can jump from one end of the county clear to th'other side. Yes siree, I reckon I can out- jump, outrun, outshoot, and outwrestle anybody in the whole of Greenmeadow County, Larkspur Coun- ty, Juniper County and any other durn place in this here world! THE WORLD OF THE KING Nicole Jean Sideris A long time ago, Lived a King in a castle. Rich and handsome Was he. A life any fuller No one could find, Not even across The wide sea. One day the enemy came to the gates And took all the people away But inside the castle, Which stored no hassle, The King decided to stay. All alone was he, For the servants had left, And the joker was gone, too Among his great wealth And much pampered health, The King was very blue. Oh, The wardrobe was fine, And the food was superb, And the cupboard was certainly not bare But, Woe, Thought the King, What good are these things If there's no one with whom To Share? 33

Black Frank Melissa Panich Black Frank was a very large farmer reaching 6 foot 4 inches. He had a long black bushy beard and piercing dark eyes. His monsterous hands had a mag- ical quality for setting broken bones. Although Black Frank had no medical back- ground, he would just come to small towns to sell his produce. After awhile people began to hear of his magical qualities and would be waiting for him anx- iously for help. Many stories have been told of how he would place his hands on the injured area and feel, twist, turn and bend until it had been fixed. One of Black Frank's most unusual events was when he healed a boy that had fallen off a cliff. The boy had to be carried home because he couldn't walk. They waited until Black Frank came to town. It was said that he took the boy by the neck and began twisting and manuvering him and that screams could be heard for miles around. When Black Frank was finished the boy was able to walk again. Black Frank would come and go just as mysteri- ously as his hands could repair broken bones, and improve sprained ligaments and muscles. Spring smells good, the fragrance of the new flowers mixed with the early morning dew. Spring also means summer is very close. The air is warm, school seems long, but the day drags on. The best part of spring is vacation, when it can be enjoyed fully. Heliotrope Jeanie Nairn You probably won't believe this story, but ...... I will tell it anyway. This story is about a hippo- potamus, whose name is Heliotrope. Well, Heliotrope likes to swim in the Gatun Lake. She swims around the lake and just has a good time. But Heliotrope's favorite place is at the School of the Americas in Panama. The cadets at the School of the Americas see Heliotrope everyday, and she looks so skinny that they have to give herhtheir leftover lunch. After lunch Heliotrope always takes a swim. So, Heliotrope went for a swim to the Gatun Locks. Heliotrope wanted to go through the locks to explore. So they charged her 3.50 to get through. Luckily she had some money with her. Heliotrope got part way through the locks, but then couldn't get the rest of herself through. She stayed there for 2 weeks. Everybody thought she'd be skinny enough to go through the locks but she wouldn't budge. So they called the most popular doctor in the whole world. The doctor gave Helio- trope some diet pills but that didn't work. By then 20 ships were waiting to get through the canal. One guy said, Let's get 5 truckloads of soap and slide her out. They tried but that didn't work either. Another guy said, Why don't we take Hercules , the biggest crane in Panama, and lift her out? They tried but she was so fat that she busted the crane. Then a man that used to sell balloons in Washington, D.C. pumped Heliotrope full of air, painted Good Year on her side, put a motor on her back and now she floats around Washington in the air, with a cage full of people underneath, sightseeing.

Golden were those days of yore, And that is what the fire bore. The wood once firm is now but dust. The coals below have turned to rust. Oh, how those days of yore do shine, Brighter and brighter with passing of time. I Erica Greenberg Yesterday it was supposed to rain, the weatherman had ordered it and like the fool I am, I didn't expect it. everything came crashing in down around me, f and the rains started and it turned to hail and left little red marks wherever the pellets hit my body. And I, like the fool I am, stood out in the freezing cold rain and let the drops absorb into my brain, and embraced the rain, tried to catch the very element that was succeeding in destroying my senses, and leaving in me nothing but a void, and I, like the fool I am, staunchly refused to acknowledge the seemingly obvious fact of my ruinization. 44 Speedy Joe J Speedy Joe was small, about 5'1l , and oey Hins they said that he was a kinda blacky with a little yella in 'im . But then, he was black but I don't know about the yellow. He played football like you've never seen. He was so fast that the quarterback would call the signals and Speedy would get the ball from the center before the quarterback could touch it. When Joe was born he had two older brothers who were in junior high school. The oldest, Anthony Brown, was a great basketball player who later went to U.C.L.A. Paul Brown, Anthony's younger brother was a great baseball player. He later went bn to lead the Oakland A's to the World Series. It seemed that Joe would have played football or become another Anthony or Paul. When Joe was four he gdt his first football. His father said, He would go out front, run over a coupla' trees, race a car up the street and flip the light switch in his room and hit the bjed before the switch clicked, to see if he still had it in 'im . When Joe was eight, he went out with his ad so he could teach him how to tackle, but instead ,oe ended up breaking his dad's leg. It seemed Joe alre dy knew how to tackle, he just didn't know he knfw. When Joe was sixteen, he played high school fooltball. His coach said, That little guy can do nothing wrong. He's great, you know, he's great! Spe Brownls name was known by every pro edy Joe scout in America and by just everybody in America.jHe made inter-scholastic superstar in high school and the school, to honor him, made a statue in his name. He got a scholarship to U.S.C. There he ran for tive thousand yards and won the Heisman Trophy four years straight. That's where he got thenami Speedy. Usually he ran around 'em but sometimes run over 'em, and thatls where practicing over trees came in handy. He was too sm e would running all to be named Tank, so they named him Speedy. He was drafted by Oakland and lived with his brother Paul. In the pro's, Joe would run a one. second hundred yard dash. Joe led the Oakland Raiders to ve super bowls and led them to the playoffs ten straig t times. It was said that Joe was running a kickoff back and was going too fast and propelled himself in mid air and was never seen again. My Mountain 1 Joanne Murphy My friend and I, we climed by mountain, And we did it with not a doubting. We almost got up to the top, until my friend began to drop, Here , I said, grab this map!
