Now Opey wasn't that different from anybody else who lived in Shmitesville, he was the average size of everybody else, 11 feet 3 inches tall, and he was the average weight of everybody else, 2600 pounds, but the only difference between him and all of the other Shmitonians is that his feet were just so enor- mous that you wouldn't believe me if I told you how large they were. Well, I might as well tell you. They were seven feet long from sole to nail and each foot weighed 650 pounds. After years of pondering he finally decided how he would put his huge feet to use. The next morning he went out to the fishing store and bought twenty of the largest fishing nets the man had to sell. He tied the fishing nets between his toes and went out to the ocean. He sat on the pier and dipped his feet in the water. After a couple of min- utes he pulled his foot up quick out of the water. He looked down at his feet and then at the net. He had discovered what he had hoped to find, 400 blue fish and 200 red snappers, all stuck in the net that was tied around his foot. Now you know why I called him the greatest fisherman the world has ever seen. Cars take people to different places, Including people of different races. Some cars are slow like the Model T's, while others drive fast at incredible speeds. Cars come in different shapes and sizes, From the big old vans, to the Mazda Mizars. Some cars have luxury from end to end, like the Monte Carlo and Mercedes Benz. Some cars are built to drive fast as jets, Like the little Porsches and the sporty Corvettes. There are many styles of the typical car, they come from here and from afar. The main reason that the car came to be, was to please people like you and like me. The Trail My Cycle Failed on John Bruce 8a Greg Faust I was riding my cycle down the trail. I hit the jump and started to sail. My gears slammed into first, and my front wheel burst. I thought it was the end, but it could have been worse. 40 The Haunted Place Everyone at some age in their life 'has a special corner of the world all their own. I had one, too. I passed by it every Monday, after my piano lesson. It was a secluded point hidden behind stretches of moss grass and sand. I called it the Haunted Place. Whenl was there I would forget all my everyday aggravations and start worrying about the Haunted Place. It was evil. Diabolic spirits dwelled there and frightened away all nature, but me. It was gloomy - the sun would not shine there, and the ground was dry - rain would not tread there either. The echoes of history seemed to bounce on and off the ground, challenging me to enter this forbidden territory. My imagination would soar higher and higher as I terrified myself in my sinister fantasy. When I walked by there, the demons chained me to the spot while my stomach began to flutter. It seemed forever till I broke down the invisible wall that enclosed the area and ran away to freedom. As the days passed into weeks and the weeks into months the spirit's power seemed to be diminishing slowly. One Monday it happened. I walked past tlie Haunted Place without ever stopping. Then I remem bered and walked back. I laughed, wondering how I ever could have thought the place looked different than the grass and weeds surrounding it. The sun shone brightly throwing light on the various plants.lI was freed from my childhood mystery of evil spirits As I walked away I knew I had grown older than the Haunted Place. by Michelle Coheln Grammarville . Elayne Kriss The puzzling town of Grammarville Lies past the lake, beyond the hill. There, in a densely-wooded glen, Live two well-intentioned gentlemen. Both are related to one another, Mr. Punctuation is one, Mr. Capitalization is the other. When I venture into their forbidding glen, I I find the pair foften way past tenj Discussing hyphens and nouns of direct address, How a well-placed colon prevents a mess, The capitalization of proper nouns, Like names of days and months and towns, The proper use of commas and quotes, How to punctuate a set of notes, Question marks for every query, Exclamation points when things get eerie, The need for periods, apostrophes and such, Frankly, I find it a little too much. The occasional tourist to Grammarville Finds objects of interest, some rare, But though it's a nice place to visit, Few really enjoy living there. l Along the banks of the James River, A willow tree grows wild, A willow that's stood without a quiver, While the wind and grass beguiled. Before the settlers, before the ships, And here before the seas, Into the river it's branches dip, When the land was wild and free. And while in ships from England's shore, Invaded harmlessly, Standing hundreds of years before, Untouched they left that tree. He had a long black bushy beard and piercing dark eyes. His monsterous hands had a mag- ical quality for setting broken bones. Although Black Frank had no medical back- ground, he would just come to small towns to sell his produce. After awhile people began to hear of his magical qualities and would be waiting for him anx- iously for help. Many stories have been told of how he would place his hands on the injured area and feel, twist, turn and bend until it had been fixed. One of Black Frank's most unusual events was when he healed a boy that had fallen off a cliff. The boy had to be carried home because he couldn't walk. They waited until Black Frank came to town. It was said that he took the boy by the neck and began twisting and manuvering him and that screams could be heard for miles around. When Black Frank was finished the boy was able to walk again. Black Frank would come and go just as mysteri- ously as his hands could repair broken bones, and improve sprained ligaments and muscles. The best part of spring is vacation, when it can be enjoyed fully. Heliotrope Jeanie Nairn You probably won't believe this story, but ...... I will tell it anyway. This story is about a hippo- potamus, whose name is Heliotrope. Well, Heliotrope likes to swim in the Gatun Lake. She swims around the lake and just has a good time. But Heliotrope's favorite place is at the School of the Americas in Panama. The cadets at the School of the Americas see Heliotrope everyday, and she looks so skinny that they have to give herhtheir leftover lunch. After lunch Heliotrope always takes a swim. So, Heliotrope went for a swim to the Gatun Locks. Heliotrope wanted to go through the locks to explore. So they charged her 3.50 to get through. Luckily she had some money with her. Heliotrope got part way through the locks, but then couldn't get the rest of herself through. She stayed there for 2 weeks. Everybody thought she'd be skinny enough to go through the locks but she wouldn't budge. So they called the most popular doctor in the whole world. The doctor gave Helio- trope some diet pills but that didn't work. By then 20 ships were waiting to get through the canal. One guy said, Let's get 5 truckloads of soap and slide her out. They tried but that didn't work either. Another guy said, Why don't we take Hercules , the biggest crane in Panama, and lift her out? They tried but she was so fat that she busted the crane. Then a man that used to sell balloons in Washington, D.C. pumped Heliotrope full of air, painted Good Year on her side, put a motor on her back and now she floats around Washington in the air, with a cage full of people underneath, sightseeing. Benny Gumbates David Delmar Benny Gumbates, the fisherman, was truly a man of great strength and stature. The Atlantic Ocean was his fishing hole and his swimming pool. Occasionally, he would step over to the Great Lakes for a footbath. He started each day by swimming a few laps across the Atlantic. Just for recreation, he would rope a couple of whales, place a foot on each whale's back, and have an exciting chariot ride across the deep blue sea. He had caught and conquered many demons in the dark waters off the coast: squid, octopus, and ser- pents. The real challenge came when he ran into the great white shark Jowls.', Jowls had just attacked the steamship, Queen Mary, and was viciously ramming her bow with his snout. Stop that , roared Benny, in a voice that could be heard in Cleveland, Ohio. Make me, snarled the irate shark, as he made a giant tidal wave with his tail. Benny ignored the rushing water, and carefully picked up the steamship, and placed it in a safe part of the ocean. All the passengers cheered as Benny plucked Jow1s teeth from his enormous ugly mouth. That was the end of Jowls terrorizing the Atlantic for awhile. He flapped his tail one last ripple and swam to the floor of the ocean to grow a new set of teeth. My Brag Elayne Kriss My name is Ezekiel Clampet, Zeke for short. But then, he was black but I don't know about the yellow. He played football like you've never seen. He was so fast that the quarterback would call the signals and Speedy would get the ball from the center before the quarterback could touch it. When Joe was born he had two older brothers who were in junior high school. The oldest, Anthony Brown, was a great basketball player who later went to U.C.L.A. Paul Brown, Anthony's younger brother was a great baseball player. He later went bn to lead the Oakland A's to the World Series. It seemed that Joe would have played football or become another Anthony or Paul. When Joe was four he gdt his first football. His father said, He would go out front, run over a coupla' trees, race a car up the street and flip the light switch in his room and hit the bjed before the switch clicked, to see if he still had it in 'im . When Joe was eight, he went out with his ad so he could teach him how to tackle, but instead ,oe ended up breaking his dad's leg. It seemed Joe alre dy knew how to tackle, he just didn't know he knfw. When Joe was sixteen, he played high school fooltball. His coach said, That little guy can do nothing wrong. He's great, you know, he's great! Spe Brownls name was known by every pro edy Joe scout in America and by just everybody in America.jHe made inter-scholastic superstar in high school and the school, to honor him, made a statue in his name. His name was Ben Roberts. Every morning he went up to a nearby lake to get some breakfast. He'd just hook his axe under the edge of ice, give one or two tug and a whole cover of ice would come off in his harid Then Ben would reach into the lake, take out a lo of 'd fish, and replace the top. Ben was neat and he dr like to leave things lying around. Ss S. n't He'd cook the fish, then he would go out to look for gold. One time, on top of a hill, he discoverfld a whole bunch of gold. Some of the chucks were soj big that even Ben couldn't carry them. He decided to roll them down the mountain to his house at the bottom. He fetched the biggest one and heaved it out over the edge. But he heaved a little too hard cause the bould- er just sailed through the air never once touching the ground. Ben noted it was going south, so he raced down to the United States and sure enough, he saw that boulder commin' straight for him. Ben dodged it and it sank almost a mile into the ground and rolled a long way before it stopped. That's how we got Grand Canyon. I Another time, when Ben was out, he started t a chill, and wished that he had a nice fur jacketflvith the get him. Suddenly a polar bear jumped out and tried to eat Ben. Man was born with honesty, He labored in the fields and fallow, As handsome and tall as his harvests, He was a beautiful being to behold. Man grew and grew, And fashioned weapons for a battle, Took on the duties of a knight, And fought bitterly with each other. Still some men were righteous, And pleaded with the others to stop, But the men kept on, Destroying themselves. When Jason got hungry he'd reach up into a tree for ten or eleven squirrels. Sometimes he'd wrestle a bear. One winter there was a long snowstrom and by the time it ended the snow was up to Jason's shoulders. Jason packed up his bags and set out to help snow- bound travelers. He noticed a drift of snow near the edge ofa cliff so he started digging up a covered wagon. Finally he had dug out the whole wagon and out jumped a dog. The dog jumped on Jason forcing him to step off of the cliff. Jason and the dog rolled down the cliff gathering snow as they rolled along. Towards the bottom of the cliff all you could see was a gigantic snowball. That was the last anybody ever saw of Jason Snow, or the dog. ? -'N Galaxy The stars twinkled merrily to their mentor, the moon, in a never-ending dance of stately constellations and whirling comets ..... When he arrived in New York City, he immediately roamed the streets. To show off in front of the ladies, he picked up two cars with his little finger. He finally met a woman who was twice as big as he was and also weighted twice as much as he did. Her name was Hilda. She told Jake that if he could lift more than she could, she would marry him, but if she lifted more, Jake would have to be her servant. Jake quickly agreed and tried to think of something they could lift. They started out. at Macy's Depart- ment Store. They had no trouble lifting it. They had lifted everything in New York City before a police- man saw them. He arrested them for vandalizing property. After they were caught, they spent several months in jail. Hungry Jack Peyton Roberts Hungry Jack was soon to be the world's super- hero. Follow this story and find out how he gained fame and fortune and lost it, then returned to the ways of a small town. Hungry Jack was born in the northern part of the country in a no-name town. When he was born, his crib was a piano case. It wasn't that he was too large, it was that he weighted too much. When he was a tot between the ages of one and two, he would always eat biscuits. His mother and the neighbors would make nicknames for Hungry, such as plump chump and piece of pie '. Hungry Jack grew tired of this kind of teasing, and decided to try to cut down the number of biscuits he ate each day. He replaced his eating habit with another bad habit - sucking his thumb. This soon became his favorite pastime. He would sit for hours,'just sucking his thumb and day dreaming of how one day he would be famous. Hungry was growing very quickly, soon he grew very tall, and had the strength of ten bulldozers. He was as fast as a train. Hungry would wait 'till 5:00 each evening when the train came, and race it to town. One day Hungry got carried away with himself, and raced the train clear to the big city which was 500 miles away. In the city Hungry found his strength gave him an advantage over everyone. He became a good law-abiding citizen, and used his strength only when he was angry. Hungry became good friends with the entire police force. fthe chief and two deputiesl One day the chief offered him a job. It was as the guard of the one bank in that town. The first night of his assignment, he had taken position inside the bank, when shortly he heard a sound coming from the rear of the bank. He went to see what it was. Hungry found two men climbing through a rear window, he yelled '6Halt . When they did not, he chased the would-be robbers until he caught them, which only took a few seconds. Hungry asked them what they were doing, when they didn't answer Hungry became furious and violent, he grab- bed their arms and tied them in knots. Then Hungry called the police on his Walkie-talkie. The police cap- tain was very happy to catch these men for they were being hunted in connection with another bank rob- bery in the next town. When he asked Hungry what he would like to have as a reward, Hungry replied BISCUITS . The captain sent for a half dozen biscuits. When the order arrived he gave them to Hungry. In an instant the biscuits were gone bag and all. The captain ordered biscuits again and again for Hungry 'cause Hungry was still HUNGRY . The captain was so angry with Hungry, he tired him. Hungry didn't care, he was' too busy eating. Hungry was returned to the no-name town and to this day Hungry is still hungry. Hungry is on a commercial now and then, watch for him, you can't miss him!
