The team played determined to compensate for inexperience and injuries attained over the course of the season. The St. Joe Valley was as tough as ever featuring the number one ranked Mendon Hornets. The Magi came from behind and defeated Athens in their opener. The team defeated Burr Oak in the Homecoming game. They were only the second team to score a touchdown against Schoolcraft all season long. The Magi will return 13 players for the 1988 season and make a concentrated effort to improve their record in the upcoming season. 30 Colon—vs—Opponents 28 Athens 17 0 Centreville 59 14 Climax-Scotts 8 0 Mendon 67 6 Constantine 28 28 Burr Oaks 20 0 White Pigeon 72 6 Schoolcraft 35 16 Bronson 35 31 Row 1: Shawn Yesh, Tim Noga. Michelle Murphy. Kendra Wyant. Janine Saxman Coach: Dawn Wagner The Colon girls J.V. Basketball team is the hope of the future, the well from which a successful varsity program is drawn. By looking at the season record (5-11) some may think the well has run dry. that thought couldn't be farther from the truth. This season 14 girls made up the team, and the only possible negative point that can be found is the below .500 record. Fourteen girls joined the team and fourteen girls finished the season. At a time when many programs are losing people, this accomplishment shows tremendous dedication by the athletes themselves. Throughout the season each player improved their skills and knowledge of the game; they showed good sportsmanship, enthusiasm and used teamwork to achieve goals. These things along with more experience and confidence provide for a successful future for the girls basketball program. These ladies deserve a lot of credit and praise for their accomplishments this year. Having fun at Summer B.B. camp! We LOVE BASKETBALL? Colon finished the season with a 13-7 record, finishing in 3rd place in the SJV conference behind Cli-max-Scotts, and champion White Pigeon. They lost to Athens in the opening round of the district tournament. Gwen Seiler was the leading scorer and rebounder averaging 14.5 poinst and 9 rebounds per game. Kim Farrell led the team in Free Throws at 57% on the year. Anne Oswald led in assists at 3.3 per game and Stacy Decker averaged 4 steals a game. Kim Farrell and Gwen Seiler were selected to the all-conference team, and the all-area team for the second straight year. Anne Oswald and Stacy Decker were selected as honorable mentions to the all-area team. Special awards went to, Kim Farrell: 3 year Varsity Award, Co-MVP., Gwen Seiler: Co-MVP., Anne Oswald: 3 yr Varsity Award, 101%, Jill Eicher: Coaches Award. 36 Go, Kim! Not only did they finish undefeated 12-0 dual meet record they boasted a 28-0 record over the last three years. The team captured it's third conference championship in as many years and qualified for their third consecutive state final appearance. After finishing fourth in the state finals the last two seasons this years team moved up to a fine third place finish. Along with many team invitational championships there were several individual a-ward winner as well. Individual honors went to the following people. Steve Kaukonen—All State—All County—All League Dave Adams—All League—All County Len Haidl—All League—All County Stacy Oldenberg—All League John West—All League Honorable Mention Girls Cross County First Row—Kelli Gilchrist. Katie Martin Second Row—Suzanne Drake. Keri Andrews, Vikki Brown. Coach John Van Winkle The Girl’s Cross Country team started the season slowly in that they had only four team members and could not. as a result, compete as a team. A few weeks into the season a fifth member was added in time to finish the season in team competition. In spite of their lack of numbers the team was able to finish second in the county meet with Kelli Gilchrist, Katie Mrtin, and Vikki Brown being named to the All County Team. In regional competition Colon placed third and was again led by Gilchrist, Martin, and Brown. Gilchrist and Brown also earned spots on the All League team. The third place finish qualified the team for the state finals. In State Finals competition the Magi did a fine job as they placed fifth in team standings. Kelli Gilchrist led the way with a first place finish to become Colon’s first state cross country champion. Gilchrist was supported by Katie Martin who placed 11th. Both were named to the All State Team. Other runners in the competition were Vikki Brown 34th. Suzanne Drake 43rd and Kan Andrews 57th. All runners are underclassmen and will return next season. These girls should form the nucleus of a fine team for the future. 40 Golf First Row—Coach Tim Sylvain, Janyka Ballard, Camille Gilbert, Eric Wagner, Steve Landess, Sean Coakley Second Row—Andy Percival, Jeremy Haskin. They had Jim Tuman come to the school to speak, and the experience was positive and a good beginning for our program. We are presently working on a “Board A-ward” to be presented awards night to the student who best exemplifies “positive self-image!” The Board has made some curriculum changes they felt were necessary and are always working to improve class offerings and schedules. The Board of Education has excellent long range goals and are hoping to be able to implement them soon. 53 Raymond Saxman Support Staff Custodians 54 Oran Hanson Nolan Hanson We would like to thank the kitchen staff, custodians, and bus drivers for their help in the support of our school. The thing that I urge them to do is stick together, watch the grades, and try to learn as much as possible from your coaches. The team has a lot of raw talent and desire but they have to be intense for each game. The highlight of our season was a two point win over Mendon.
