Though we were diminutive, we thought we would be tough competition for our league. We were troubled by a small team and lack of depth, which lead us to a 2 8 record. The Burr Oak games was our playing climax. We scored 66 points in the regulation four quarters of play. The key to our success in this game was the outstanding running, efficient passing and exceptional receiving. Awards for the year are as follows: Best Back-Joey Schwartz, Best Lineman—Craig Greshaw, Best Defensive Player Earl Crawford, Most Valuable Player—Craig Fairchild, Three Year Awards—Dave Sctterblad and Craig Greshaw. The JV Football season, through all the dropouts, the injuries, the academic difficulties and the unblemished win column, produced several possibilities for Colon s football future. Playing close to the edge of extinction every practice, the team survived on will and determination. The season itself, though a disappointment in the win-loss record, gave fifteen boys the experience they'll need to compete for varsity spots next year. The parents were supportive of both the boys and the coaches despite the program's several setbacks. Special mention should go to Chad Schwartz. He was injured early in the season yet he went to all the practices and helped out. Brian Gales captained both the offense and defense Dennis French and Pete Hubly anchored their offensive and defensive positions and improved with each game. If it wasn't for the girls possessing strong character and good attitudes. the season could have been a very long one. The girl gradually gained the necessary confidence in themselves and fought their way back with several well-played games. They finished the season on the upbeat by winning six of their final nine games. This strong finish included two wins in the state districts tournament, and finishing as the district runner-up. Strong character, determination, and good attitudes would best describe the 1986 Colon Varsity Basketball team a team that any coach, parent, school and town can be very proud of. 51 Junior Varsity Front row: Angel Loudenslager. Our season consisted of a lot of close games. We started fast as we won 5 of our first 7 games, and then we started playing a little inconsistent and lost a few games down the stretch that maybe we shouldn't have. Overall. I was pleased with our season, as everyone had a great attitude, everyone worked hard, and I think they had some fun doing it. This is an outstanding group of athletes, and students, that represents Colon High School well, and as a coach, I am proud to be associated with each of them. I anticipate each of them being a part of a strong basketball program in the years to follow. Good Luck to each of you! 52 Kim Carpenter makes a jump shot. CHEERLEADING B«h Merkle. WINTER Basketball Varsity This year's varsity basketball team was faced with the challenge of replacing three seniors who played their roles extremely well last year. The team was also battling a lack of size against most opponents, and were in need of proven scorers. The team used their strength, speed, quickness, and determination to reel off five wins in a row early in the season on their way to a 9-12 record overall and 6-9 in the league This year’s team, which had scored over sixty points only three times, delighted the fans with a 97 95 win in one of their last home games. However, looking back at the season the boys improved dramatically during the second half. They started performing as a team and used a team concept which allowed them to win 5 of their last four games. If they stay together as a team, they should do quite well for themselves throughout their high school years. Good luck. Jennie Thrams This year’s Varsity Volleyball team faced a lot of tough teams. They played their best, but only ended up 2-5 in the SJV. They had a very young team, with only six returning Varsity players. Camille Gilbert. Stacy Decker. Gwen Seiler, and Jennie Thrams were all moved up this year to help the Magi. These girls put a great deal into the team. Jennifer Seiler. Rhonda Gardner. Shanelle Nash. Sharyl Green, and Meg Mangold (seniors) put forth great effort in their last high school volleyball games. Kim Farrell was honored with a place on the All-Conference team and Sharyl Green received an Honorable Mention. 64 Let's get the game going! Watch! I'll do a double flip. VOLLEY BALL This year's JV Volleyball team suffered from the loss of players that moved up to the Varsity. The coach was also replaced part way through the season, by Miss Sattcrlee. The girls seemed to get by these hurdles and tried their best. The team participated in many tournaments to help them get the experience many girls did not have. This helped the girls in the league games. The team was 3-4 in SJV and 4-7 overall. Top Row: Vikki Brown, Kim Carpenter. Theresa Green, Tami Hurley, Juli Broker, coach Laura Satterlee. Bottom Row. In spite of this it has already been a very successful season for the girl team. They have won the women's division of the Colon Invitational and finished second in the Pittsford Relays. The team has an undefeated dual meet season and stand 9-0 overall and 7-0 in league competition. This will give them a decided edge as they head into the league meet which is to take place in two weeks. A win there will give them an undisputed championship. The team has only fourteen members but has managed to be very competitive due to the fine efforts of this small group. They have been led by all state high jumper, hurdler (who placed 2nd at state) Camille Gilbert, and sprinters Anne Oswald and Angel Loudenslager as well as freshman middle distance runner Kelli Gilchrist. 74 GIRL’S TRACK 1st: A. Colon won, 62-60. 81 Nursery School Each year the Child Development Adult Living Class puts on a nursery school for two weeks so that the 53 participating seniors will have a practical experience and so that they would be able to work with the children and know what to expect in the future. This year there were approximately fifteen 4-5 year olds. While they were here they listened to stories, played games, went outside, had snacks, and had free time. The seniors learned a lot and the children had a lot of fun. 82 AWARDS NIGHT Judd Award Robert Spearow Award Outstanding Female Athlete Award Outstanding Male Athlete Award 84 Robert Spearow Award FFA BANQUET Guest Speaker Hostetler Top Sales Winner The annual FFA banquet held this year on May 7 was once again a resounding success. One of the leaders in its organization has been Jean le Jurzawsk i. She has been the bingo director from its beginning. Jeanie and a handful of others had been running 50-50 raffles and bake sales in an attempt to earn money to support the athletic department. After much effort and little profit, they decided there must be a better way, and Monday Night Bingo at Colon was born. That first year the profit brought in through bingo amounted to around $4,000, with an average per person spending of $7. The program has grown so that this past year has shown a profit of $16,120.70 with an average individual spending $26 per night. To date over $100,000 has been earned and contributed to Colon Schools in support of our athletic and physical education programs. The success and growth of the bingo program has been due mainly to the efforts of Jeanie Kurzawski. She and the bingo workers have spent many long hours in an effort to develop a quality bingo program. Thank you, Jeanie, for all your time and effort. We couldn't have done it without you.
