Both the boys and girls teams were young with only one senior, Michelle Percival, on either team. The boys' team started slowly with three losses during the first half of the season, but finished strong with a four win and four loss final in dual competi tion. The high points of the season were third place finishes in both the county meet and regionals. The team consisted of five freshmen, one sophomore, and one junior, indicating a strong team will return next season. The team was led by sophomore Scott Kaukonen. who earned All-County and All-State honors. The girls' team surprised everyone right from the onset as they continued the winning tradition established by their predecessors. The Magi women finished the season with a fine seven won and one loss record capped by a County Championship and a seventh place finish in the State finals. They also captured the Union City Invitational championship. Top performers were Tracey Mott and Stacy Richmond, who were named to the All-County and All-State teams while teammate Rhonda Gardner earned a spot on the All-County team. Much is expected of both these teams next season as they both have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in state cross country circles. Coach John Van Winkle 89 Let s go this way. Where'd everybody go? 10 extra pounds just by wearing this Are we almost there? Is everyone’s shoe tied? 1984 DISTRICT CHAMPIONS The Colon girls’ basketball team compiled a fine 20-3 record. It was their third straight 20-win season for the lady Magi. The Magi girls started their successful season in the summer when they participated in the Manistee summer tourney and then attended the U. of M. team camp. These scrimmages not only helped the girls develop their basketball skills, but also developed strong friendships, team spirit and unity. The Magi opened the season with a strong 67 36 win over class B Sturgis. The lady Magi then went on to win their fifth straight Invitational Tournament by beating Burr Oak 90-10 in the semifinal game. In this game Tracie Craver broke the school single game scoring record with 44 points. In the championship game the Magi beat Athens 66 37. Colon had won 53 straight regular season games before Centreville broke the streak with a 49-39 win. The Magi ended the regular season with a strong 99-16 win over Burr Oak on parents' night. Tracie Cracer became the first player in the school’s history to score over a 1000 points for a career when she netted 26 against the Bobcats. The Magi ended the regular season being ranked 3 in the state in Class D in the UPI poll. In tournament play, the Magi captured their third straight class D District Championships at Qimax. In the opening round, the Magi beat Battle Creek St. Phillip 60 35. in the semi-finals. Colon defeated Qimax 56-26. and then handed Athens a 56-27 setback in the championship game. Colon advanced to regional play at Bloomingdale. but were upset by Grand Rapids Covenant Christian in the first roun d. Tracie Craver was selected to the first team all-state squad in both the AP and UPI. Lisa LaValle was selected to the first team all-state squad in the UPI and honorable mention in the AP. Craver. LaValle and Dicken were named to the SJV All Conference team. Maureen McManus and Joey Hemel were honorable mention all-area while Gndy Dicken. Tracie Craver. and Lisa LaValle made the all-area team in the Three Rivers Commercial. Coach Engle was also selected by the UPI as Region 5 Coach of the Year. At the awards banquet Craver and LaValle were chosen as Co-MVP. McManus received the Coach's Award. Hemel received the Best Free Throw Shooter Award. Myrth Sherratt received the Lyman Decker Award. Defensive Player Awards went to Saxman. Hemel. McManus, and LaValle. The Magi will be graduating five seniors from this years' team. They are Joey Hemel. Lisa LaValle. Maureen McManus. Jackie Saxman. and Myrth Sherratt. 91 VARSITY SCOREBOARD Colon 67 Sturgis 36 Colon 90 Burr Oak 10 Colon 66 Athens 37 Colon 44 Constantine 22 Colon 67 Schoolcraft 9 Colon 74 Gimax 27 Colon 78 Mendon 16 Colon 68 White Pigeon 24 Colon 77 Springfield 18 Colon 59 Centreville 49 Colon 92 Burr Oak 19 Colon 48 Constantine 23 Colon 79 Schoolcraft 26 Colon 78 Gimax-Scotts 30 Colon 68 Mendon 23 Colon 60 White Pigeon 21 Colon 33 Centreville 38 Colon 65 Union City 40 Colon 99 Burr Oak 16 Colon 60 St. Phillip 35 Colon 56 Gimax 26 Colon 56 Athens 27 Colon 32 Grand Rapids C.C 54 92 JV GIRLS’ BASKETBALL 1984 This year's team consisted of four sophomores and five freshmen. The girls starred out slow, losing two of their first three games, but then winning the next sixteen in a row to end the season with a record of 17 wins and two losses. These young ladies were the 1984 SJV League Junior Varsity Champions with a perfect 14 wins and no loss record. The girls were the first Junior Varsity team at Colon to attend Summer Team Camp and to play summer ball. These girls improved a great deal from the summer to end the season not only on the basketball court, but as maturing young ladies. Six of these girls will be moving up to the varsity next year, I know they will continue to make the Colon Girls’ Basketball program a very positive program in the future. Exercises included a Yoga stretching routine, the practices were done without dribbling the basketball and with a number of passes being expected before we concentrated on taking shots. Some of these ideas were slow to catch on, but when the season opener arrived, the game was exciting. Play was fast and furious. Our opponent. Athens, was surprised at our showing, although they prevailed 79 69. The applause and ovation from our crowd was a rush I. for one. will not forget. The Athens coach was very complimentary about our play. Our second game caused questions in everyone’s mind. The loss to Tekonsha (57-109) cast doubts on our ability. Tekonsha. of course, went on to an undefeated season. The rest of the season became a struggle to believe that we could ever be winners. We came close on occasion, only to let down before the final buzzer. The season stats tell us a lot about our highs and lows. We averaged 58.7 points. 14.2 assists, 10 steals and 29 9 rebounds per game. All of those say we had a pretty good season. The killer was the statistic of an average of 20.6 turnovers. The close of the regular season did give encouragement as we captured the final two games, beating Burr Oak 75 70 and Climax-Scotts 78-63. Throughout the year, opposing coaches were commenting about our efforts, our improvement and how the Varsity team was a positive representative of Colon Schools. Although the season could not be counted as a great success measuring by the scoreboard, our image has improved as group of hard workers who can respect the game, the opponent. and the struggle. For that we are proud and can look forward with anticipation. The year ended with presentation of Varsity Letters to all team members and awards to Kirk Fisher as the Most Valuable Play. William Cowsert as Most Improved Player, and Tim Farrell earned the Coach s Award. Kathleen A.
