Kathy Shackleton was the team's number two runner all season and had many outstanding performances. Kathy's best performance came in the Grand Lodge Invitational where she finished 10th with a time of 20:41. Colon’s number three runner was Sheila Schwartz. Sheila showed great improvement during the season with a season best performance coming in the Grand Lodge Inv. Her time in this meet of 20:53 was good for 11th place and positioned her third in the area rankings behind her two teammates Running fourth position for Colon during most of the season was Rhonda Schwartz Her best time of the season came at Grand Lodge where she ran 22:03 Molly Comstock finished the season as Colon’s number five runner. Colon’s softball team found some success this season not only in individual games and individual performances but also more generally in the understanding of team dedication and team spirit. We had to fill some key positions from last year, shortstop, second base, centerfield. and pitching. This turned out to be tougher than anticipated. Once our roving athlete and only senior. Dawn Wagner, moved from first base to centerfield the fielding position’s were filled pretty well. It was having to replace all four pitchers from last season that took some time. Fortunately, we had many people (mostly freshmen) who wanted to pitch and did a good job. The position itself just takes a lot of practice and a lot of experience. Overall, we won some tough games and lost some easy ones. We showed signs of brillance and signs of utter confusion. The girls seem to have the talent they just don’t seem to know what it takes to win—yet. ucnvQ -' mririr 7 2 mooPQPQPcaoapaiaHnnionianianiooiQOiaaoaacmgaaro; [DaooiaDBncamogipqipnnnPHiajionpaonic Front row, L. to R.: M. Athletes showing promise this year were Dan Campbell in the shot put and discus. Craig Frayer in the 330 hurdles, Mike Ganger in the high hurdles and Jon VanWinkle in the 440 yard dash. Dan Campbell received the most valuable award while Mike Ganger was named most improved. The 1983 girls track team faired somewhat better. With only eleven members running most of the season, the girls finished second in the Ferris State Invitational and second in the John Green Invitational. The high point of the season was a tie for second place with Constantine for the St. Joseph Valley League championship With only eleven runners Colon scored over 100 points in the league meet Sue Shackleton had an outstanding season setting school records in the mile. 880. and two mile Sue was the league champion in these events while setting new league records in the mile and 880. She received the most valuable runner and 101% awards for her efforts. Michelle Percival was named the most improved runner on the girls team. Michelle was greatly improved in both the hurdle races and did an excellent job on the relay teams during the season The season finale came with Sue Shackleton qualifying for the state finals in three events, Kathy Shackleton qualifying in the 880. and Joey Hemel qualifying in the 100 metre dash. 77 JR. The classes gifts to this school are five trees which are now planted on the schools front lawn. It is hoped that the feelings that this class has for it's school and the tradition of giving will continue with future classes. 1 10 Mwk STUDENT COUNCIL The 1982 83 Student Council showed leadership and responsibility in getting it's duties carried out Never before has the Student Council contained so many doers ' instead of watchers In years to come this will be a great asset Who knows what they will be able to accomplish? Colon Marching Magi received a number one rating this year at the MSBOA Marching Festival. It was all due to the dedication and hard work of the Marching Magi Band Members From the beginning of school, the band, along with their new director. Mrs Colleen Till, worked on their show. They put together four songs: ’•Fame”, Ice Castles”, “Sing Sing Sing”, and Superman”. On October 6th their reputaire overwhelmed the judges, and the Magi came home as something the community could be proud of. They have earned a reputation as one of the better bands in this district and a bright blue medal to pin on their band jackets. Working together and putting in so much time at those Oh so early”, early morning rehearsals, they’ve also gained around 55 friends, that are 55 of the most unique people in Colon High. WOODWINDS C.
