Jeff Thrams led the team in rushing by running 683 yards. Shawn Hendrickson had a good year by completing 39 out of 97 attempts for 419 yards. Todd Stevens had an excellent year, catching 14 passes for a total of 182 yards. Phil Carr produced 15 receptions for a total of 109 yards. Both Jeff Thrams and Todd Stevens were high scorers with 40 and 38 points respectively. Charles English had 45 tackles, and Dave Bower, 57 assists. We placed fifth in the league standing, ahead of Centreville but behind Climax-Scotts. Outstanding players elected to the S.J.V. all-conference team were: Wally VanWinkle, center; Charles English, defense; and Dave Bower, line backer. Honorable mention went to: Jeff Thrams, Ron Thrams, and Dave Mumby. We will be losing seniors: Dave Bower, Charles English, Avison McKelvey, Ken Rockelein, Mike Saxmam, Todd Stevens, Ron Thrams, and Wally VanWinkle but with the knowledge of this year's juniors and experience gained by the sophomores who played on the Varsity squad, our football future looks bright. 2 1 J.V. They were, however, a very determined group. Their strength was the fast break, and their ability to score from the outside. They played a brand of basketball that was action packed, which everyone enjoyed watching. The highlight of the year was their upset victory over state ranked and league leading Mendon. It came one week after Colon had been crushed 72-46 at Mendon. However, in front of a standing room only crowd at Colon High School. Colon pulled out an amazing 58-57 upset victory over Mendon. It was a dramatic win. one that will always be remembered. 2 5 JV BASKETBALL Coach Engle, F. Farrand, J. Farrell, R. Hostetler. T. Landis, C. Nighten gale, R. Gray, M. Oldenburg, M. Ganger, T. They finished the season with a 4-0 duel meet record and won both the three and five runner division of the Union City Invitational. At the Vicksburg Invitational Colon was third in competition with class 6 and C schools, and Sue Shackleton set a school record of 19:55. The high point of the season was a first place tie with Three Rivers in the St. Joseph County Meet. This meet sparkled with outstanding performances by all of the Colon runners. Sue Shackleton, 1st, Lisa LaValle, 2nd, and Kathy Shackleton, 5th, were placed on the All County Team. Sue also set a county meet record of 20:08. The team finished the season with a superior fourth place finish in the state finals. Lisa LaValle and Sue Shackleton were appointed to the All State Team due to their outstanding finish in the State meet. Marvin Smith, running as Colon's only male entry, had a fine season winning medals at Union City and Vicksburg, qualifying for the state finals, and earning a spot on the All County Team with his 11th place finish in that meet. Four of the girls will return next year with Kelli Stevens being lost by graduation. This would indicate a strong team for 1982. BOYS VARSITY TRACK Senior Boys School Records S. They finished second in the league with a 12-2 mark. Returning experience, hard work, and The gift from Norway’ (foreign exchange student. Mette Krogsaeter) helped this year’s team recover from graduation losses of last year and the loss of two would-be returning seniors who graduated at mid-year. More important than the wm-loss record is the team attitude demonstrated by this year’s squad. Each girl showed great maturity, unselfishness, and self-sacrifice; and when one gets those qualities from and entire team it makes coaching an easy job. They made the whole year not only successful but a “whole bunch of fun”! AWESOME 4 1 J.V. Pac-man fever swept the country as pinball addiction led to strained muscles and tendons. The Rubik’s cube presented another danger—it made people go absolutely nuts! To cure such diseases nobody was better qualified than gorgeous Rick Springfield. Doctor Noah Drake on “General Hospital.”. What a hunk! Many questions arose in 1982. Were we awaiting doomsday? The planets lined up. and we wondered if California, or maybe the whole world, was coming to an end. And how about Reaganomics, would it work? Or would everybody go broke buying Tom Selleck posters? Lady Diana .. . well the press just wouldn’t leave her alone. Obviously Prince Charles didn’t either. Would it be a son or a daughter? We had martial law in Poland and fighting in El Salvador—in this crazy world, we needed something exciting to take our attention. Then the space-shuttle came along. Actually, what’s the big deal? On other planets they probably had space-shuttles some millions of years ago. Controversies . . . well, there are some of those every year. This year, the biggest one must be the graduation of Colon’s 1982 seniors .... 1 2 7 WHAT YOU THINK 1 . Class Flirts - Kim Fredenburg and Ken Rockelein 2 .
