John Iron Man Trussel The Colon Magi Football Team had somewhat of a disappointing season. But it depends on how you look at it. Considering a majority of the players were juniors who were in there learning process. The Magi's overall record was 3-6. The wins coming from Constantine, Climax-Scotts, and Sand Creek. Chris Klawinski had a fine season of 1279 yards and a single game high of 251. He was also voted most valuable player. The most improved player award went to Berry Meyers, the 101% award to Don Muckel and Mr. Lift award went to Roger Smith. L. to R., Front Row: 8 Meyers, R. Thrams, T. Clipfell, L. Bontrager, R. Making an offensive change of this nature is difficult for a team to completely accomplish in one season. Colon's transition was further hampered by some ill-timed injuries. Colon, however, handled it all very well. The first few matches of the season were slow and at times Colon's play looked poor and unorganized. The middle of the season found Colon playing super one game and badly the next. Consistency was difficult and frustrating at times for Colon to come by; but when it finally did arrive, Colon played some exciting, well executed matches. Colon finished the year in the district finals playing their best volleyball of the season; but Battle Creek St. Phil was not to be out done, and Colon placed second in the tournament. Colon's season record was 18-8 overall. Colon ended with a 13-1 league record and finished as St. Joe Valley League champs for the fifth straight year in a row. Colon placed three players on the All-Conference first team, Vicki Kime, Kathy Nightengale, and Dawn Campbell. Two players were placed on the second team, Char King and Kim Richardson. Penny McClish made honorable mention. Vicki Kime was chosen as the leagues Most Valuable Player. Vicki was also chosen as the teams Most Valuable Player. Kim Richardson was given the award for the Most Improved Player, and Denise Frohriep was presented with the Coaches Award. 13 girls j.v. basketball FRONT ROW: Tracie Swift, Julie Pattison, Kelli Stevens, Marlys Hooley, Kendra Gre-shaw, Tammy Carpenter, Hiedi Holtz BACK ROW: Glorita Smith, Lori Church, Sharon Gordon, Angie Inman, Gena Blake, Mr. Engle. we they 38 Tekonsha 9 27 Bronson 24 34 Constantine 24 27 Schoolcraft 19 30 Mendon 26 45 White Pigeon 32 13 Centreville 11 33 Burr Oak 28 45 Climax 8 40 Constantine 21 40 Schoolcraft 12 35 Mendon 20 23 Bronson 26 28 White Pigeon 30 30 Centreville 21 29 Burr Oak 25 29 Climax 22 28 Tekonsha 25 14 7th-8th girls basketball FRONT ROW: Wendy Rogers, Michelle Percival, Joey Hemel, Wendy Allen, Jackie Sax-man, Julie Noragon, Denise Rial. Lone team member, Barb Loudenslager Once again the varsity team has lost to the skeet. This was to be expected since the skeet have always won. At the beginning of the season it was felt that this would be our year to win. The reasons for these high expectations were that league rules had been changed allowing for the use of a 50 cal. machine gun instead of the usual shotgun and the fact that the teams could be co-ed. Interest for being on the team was low due to our past record. Barb Loudenslager joined the team last season as a skeet trainer and team manager. This year she was elevated to first string and only shooter. Colon participated in five league meets this season. During these contests, Barb fired 549, 213 rounds of 50 cal. ammo. In the process of all this shooting she did manage to nick one skeet. This one hit was the best record in the league. girls j.v. frisbie team 3 points for Colon. The Magi won their first 3 games before losing, and then won 17 games in a row before losing in the regional final. The Magi girls posted a 13-1 league record sharing the SJV title with Schoolcraft. The Magi had to play over several injuries to key players to win this years league championship, but the ladies met the challenge successfully. Colon captured the Class 'D District Title at Athens. The Magi defeated Athens in the semifinal game and Centreville in the championship game. The Magi then travelled to Lawton for regional play. Colon defeated Galien in the semifinal game, but lost to Muskegon Christian in the championship game. The Magi were able to use their quickness and speed this season along with their excellent shooting ability to average 52.8 points per game, while holding their opponents to a 37.8 average per game Three Magi girls established school records this season in scoring, assists, and rebounding Vicki Kime became the first girl to score over 400 pnts. in a season. Vicki finished the year with 412 pnts. for a 18.3 average Penny McClish became the first girl to pass over 100 assists in one season. Penny handed out 165 assists for a 8.3 average, and Kim Richardson broke the rebounding record with 321 rebounds for a 14.6 average Vicki Kime, Kim Richardson, and Penny McClish received All-Conference recognition this season. Vicki was voted the leagues Most Valuable Player. At the teams banquet this winter several ladies received awards for outstanding play. Vicki Kime received the teams Most Valuable Player award, Penny McClish was the recipient of the Coache's award, Terri Truckey received the Defensive player award, Kim Richardson the Most Improved Player award, Char King received the Lyman Decker award, and Dawn Campbell received the Best Free Throw Shooter award. The Magi will be losing three seniors to graduation, Vicki, Penny, and Terri. They will definitely be missed but with 7 returning letterwomen, the Magi hope to go for it again next season. 25 junior varsity volleyball The 1980 J.V. Volleyball team was made up of ten hardworking young women. For some of them, this was their first year of competition and they improved dramatically. The Sophomores were a stabilizing influence and we counted on their steady influence and we counted on their improvement as the season progressed. The team faced tough competition by more mature teams, but still managed to place 5th at League meet. The majority of the team members were freshmen and sophomores, however the outstanding performances of the senior and juniors cannot be overlooked. Graduating members of the team included, Don Muckle, Barry Meyer, and Lloyd Walton. Dave Bower tied the school record in High Hurdles at 16.2 seconds. Coach Blanchard cited Dave as most valuable player. His ability in the Hurdles and Long Jump helped him to accumulate an overwhelming point total. In the League meet, his individual point total was enough to defeat two other teams. Randy Schrader, a freshman, was given the honor of most improved, having cut over a minute off his two mile time. A special award, entitled true grit , was given to Dale Carr for his effort in track after recovering from a knee injury. All in all it was an exciting year with some terrific memories of good competition. That is what sports are for! LEFT to RIGHT: Coach J. Blanchard, T. Perry, S. Clipfell, D Bower, L Walton, L. The new decade that we have begun holds forth a promise of shortages and economic uncertainty. The financial stresses will demand that we reconsider our values. We will be required to choose what is both most important and what will serve us in the future. The Chinses use the same word when they speak of crisis and opportunity. The 80's will bring both to all of us. We must refuse to let a present crisis cause us to lose or mismanage our opportunities. Mr. Loren Carlisle President, Loren Carlisle 102 superintendent david myers THOUGHTS FOR THE EIGHTIES The education of young people is in a state of great transition. Parents and other adults expect more of todays educational system. This is coupled at a time when finance, due primarily to inflation, is under increasingly severe constraints. I believe the eighties will be a period of great challenge. Change will be the watchword of the era. Technological change will continue to modify our life style Family and interpersonal relations are a vital part of society's future. I think of all the things that schools and churches try to do, the most important is to teach young people to set good, consistent examples. We must love, honor and respect one another. J.
