Dedicated To Richard Hummel With deep appreciation and esteem, the 1978-79 Yearbook Staff wishes to dedicate “Legenda” to Mr. Richard Hummel who had given himself to instituting, coordinating, and developing the reading curriculum at the Junior and Senior High School level. His personal warmth, interest, and devotion expanded the reading program at Colon Community Schools into a never ending process. For the past five years his continuing effort has enhanced the educational process. We wish him continued success and good luck wherever his educational endeavors may lead him. i COLON HIGH SCHOOL 1978 LEGENDA Volume 32 400 Dallas Street Colon, Michigan We Have A Lot Of Living To Do Table of Contents Organizations and Clubs Senior Portraits Sports Fine Arts Underclassmen Pictures Administration and Faculty Student Life Senior Activities Advertising All School Index Laughing 8 Searching 34 Striving 42 Creating 70 Learning 78 Guiding 94 Seeking 104 Remembering 120 Selling 132 Looking 148 3 We’re alive! We have a lot of living to do. Colon High opens its doors to us for six years, guiding and encouraging us to high ideals, to achievement with honor. We’re proud of being Magi. And now our greatest goal is making Colon High proud to claim us as alumni. Sitting in class day after day—Dreaming, listening, dreaming again-We begin to wonder, “Why am 1 here?” So begins our search for an answer—The basis for all knowledge, all wisdom. Soon we discover that no matter how much we learn, there is always more to know and we have a lot more learning to do. 4 At a small school like Colon High we have a lot of competing to do. Each of us is given an opportunity to excel, to do better than someone else. Sometimes this offers little challenge, and stiffer competition must be found. Eventually we discover that our best competition is with ourselves. 5 There are many things which make us smile—understanding from a favorite teacher, passing our hardest exam, talking to friends between classes—things which may seem small at the time, but linger in our minds to make us happy. Happiness cannot be hidden; it must be shared, and so we have a lot of smiling to do. We have a lot of reflecting to do as we close our books and lockers the last time. What has meant the most to us as Magi? Each of us will answer in a different way for we are all unique individuals with our own interests and accomplishments. And now that the year is over we must go on to meet new ideas, new challenges, new goals. 6 7 “Grief can take care of itself, but to get the full value of joy you must have somebody to share it with.” We have a lot 8 of LAUGHING to do Homecoming Packed With Emotion Colon High School’s varsity football team was overcome October 6, 1978, Homecoming Night by White Pigeon Chiefs. While the defense shut out White Pigeon in the second half, the Magi offense had difficulty establishing any points on the board throughout the game. The final score was White Pigeon 20, Colon, 0. At halftime, the results of Friday’s voting for Homecoming Senior King and Queen candidates were announced as King, Chuck Frisbie and Queen, Kathleen Shoop. Student Council President, John Dudasko, crowned them during a brief ceremony. Other members of the court included, Senior Teresa Bontrager escorted by Karry Hostetler, Senior Kim Cinklin escorted by Dave Leighton, Junior Cathy Nightingale escorted by Larry Swartz, Sophomore Dawn Campbell escorted by Shane Clipfell, and Freshman Marlys Hooley escorted by David Bower. Throughout Homecoming Week, classes competed with each other in various contests and Dress Up Days sponsored by the cheerleaders. Monday was Crazy Day, Tuesday was Hillbilly Day, Wednesday was “50’s” Day, Thursday was Dress Up Day, and Friday was Red and White Day. Highlighting the class competitions were the Powder Puff football game won by the Junior Class girls, 12-0, and the Pep Assembly, where it was announced that the Juniors had won the overall class competition. Yes, you guessed it, this is a cheerleaders life ... but only half of it. Colon High School's Varsity Cheer-leading Squad worked hard to encourage enthusiasm in the team and student body. They strived for crowd participation at the basketball games and pep assemblies. During tournament time, the girls busted loose to show Colon School and their team how much spirit they possessed. Signs and streamers were used to decorate the player’s buses after the tournament games, inside and out. A breakfast of pancakes and sausage was made in honor of the basketball players by the cheerleaders, and cake or cupcakes were served to the players after each tournament game. 17 Freshman Basketball Cheerleaders 7th Grade Basketball Cheerleaders L. to R., Front Row: Christie Minor and Deanna Clark. Membership is based on scholarship, character, service, and leadership. All members are selected by a vote of the faculty of their school and must have shown desirable characteristics in all four areas. Colon High School's chapter has been involved in a number of activities this year. In December they traveled to Chicago for a shopping sightseeing trip. Back Row: Lance Thornton and Tom Perrv. “I love you rabbit, and someday you will be real “What is real”, the Velveteen Rabbit asked the Skin Horse. “Does it Hurt? These were a few of the questions that were answered in the Drama and Acting Class production of Margery Williams classic story of the Velveteen Rabbit” that was presented to Union City, Burr Oak, Pathfinders, and Colon Elementary Schools. The Velveteen Rabbit concerns the adventures of a toy rabbit as she tries to become real. On her way the Rabbit must deal with the Top Banana Nana who rules the nursery with an iron hand. The musical moves between the worlds of the toy closet and the nursery and is sprinkled with songs. With the beginning of the winter term the Drama and Acting Class focused their efforts on the full length play “Flowers for Algernon, written by David Rogers. The show was presented to the public May 18 and 19 in the Colon High School Gym. The play centers on Charlie, a mentalb retarded man, and the strange inter weaving of his life with Algernon, mouse. Experimental surgery has been pe formed on Algernon increasing his i telligence three fold. The operation is trv on Charlie (Nathan Bingaman), who re idly changes from a moron to a genius, more intelligent than his teacher, Miss K nian (Kim Richardson), or the doctors v created the operating technique. Hard work and dedication made this reality for the second time during the band’s history. Participating in the University of Michigan's Band-O-rama Day was one of many highlights of the year. Afterwards the band spent an exciting night at Howard Johnson’s Motel in Ann Arbor, money raised by fund raising activities and by the continual support of the band parents. Other activities that the band participated in included: Concert Band Festival, the Michigan Day Parade in Sturgis, and the Memorial Day Parade held in Colon. Jr. Band Receives 2nd Division Rating L. Board members interview new superintendent candidates. 96 Farewell Dr. Hansen Dr. Robert Hansen left us January 30. 1979, to take a position as the new superintendent of the Paw Paw Schools. He was with us since August of 1972. In those 6V4 years he commenced a number of programs. Such as full day kindergarten and fifth grade band. Distributive education, co-op, and vocational shared time programs, guidance services, the industrial art program, and girl’s sports were expanded under his direction. Foreign language was again introduced into the high school curriculum, and also the offerings in mathematics, home economics, and business were extended. He received his high school education at Waugegan Township High School and graduated in 1945. He furthered his education at Northern Illinois State College and in 1952 received his Bachelor of Science degree. In continuing his career, he was awarded a Master of Arts degree from North Western University of Illinois in 1958 and his Doctor of Education certificate from Western Michigan University in 1971. He's been extremely active in community projects such as Lions Club. American Legion, and securing and promoting the Hills Opera House project. Colon High School will miss his guidance and leadership in our school system and community. 97 Mr. Myers New Superintendent Mr. David Myers, Superintendent J.
