colon high school reflections volume 31 400 dallas street colon, michigan pride Pride is defined as: justifiable self-respect, delight or elation resulting from some act. As members of Colon High School, you as a student body and as individuals have many achievements to take pride in. We live in a rapidly changing time. With knowledge and technology rapidly expanding, we can not afford to submit to changing or lowering our standards, but should strive for high ideals. Too often we choose the simplest or shortest route without challenging our resources. There are numerous forms of pride. However, without a total commitment to a task, no matter how great or small it might be, your contribution will be viewed with less respect than if you had put forth a total effort. You do not have to be a star to be in a play. You do not have to be a hero to participate in a sport. You do not have to be a comedian to make others smile. You must simply be able to put something of yourself into whatever you do. Enjoy your achievements no matter how insignificant you feel they might be. Any honest contribution you make in your life is worthy of pride. Be confident of your ability to achieve or create. Each of us is capable of great accomplishments in some area if we are willing to put forth an effort. You will not know what pride is until you have truly given your best. Whether it is the personal satisfaction of completing a term paper, being a member of a winning team, or the shared pride of seeing a first place float you helped build, I hope that as you reflect on the contributions you have made to Colon High School you may do so with a sense of pride. With pride we present Reflections. 3 homecoming of 1977 King Emit? Stauffer and Queen Kris Johnson. Doreen Hostetler crowns Kris Johnson queen. At one point in their season they put together a nine game winning streak. No cuts were made at the beginning of the season, so seventeen girls competed on the squad. With such a large team much team effort and patience and individual determination is required. These young ladies demonstrated that effort. patience and determination. They improved their own skills and consequently improved the strength of the entire team—they made it a winning team. This was one of the J.V.'s most successful seasons. The 1977-78 Boys' Varsity Basketball team finished up a fine season with twelve wins and seven losses. This was Colon's first winning season in eight years and also enables us to finish up in third place in the leagues. Although we didn’t overpower anybody we played good fundamental basketball. The highlight of our season was probably the trip to Waldron climaxing with an overtime win on a shot at the buzzer by Ralph Merkle. Mark Thornton and Rich Hostetler provided us with good rebounding and fine playmaking while Andy Bailey thrilled us with his long shots and Chuck Frisbie by his fine all around play. Honors went to Chuck Frisbie as he made the All-Conference team while Mark Thornton and Ralph Merkle made honorable mention. Mark Thornton's teammates voted him most valuable while Rich Hostetler won the most improved player and Chuck Frisbie the Coaches Award. 23 I hope it goes in. j.v. basketball Top: Mgr. For the third consecutive year the team captured league championship honors, posting a 10-2 mark. For the second year in the three year history of the league tournament they brought home the first place trophy. Their overall record was the best yet putting up eighteen wins against only six defeats (four of those going to higher class schools). Again this year as in the past three years, they qualified for the regional tournament. This year they put together their best regional play yet finishing in second place. What this team lacked in size they made up for in determination, intelligence and persistence. They were a gutty group of ball players who never gave up. They deserve a lot of credit for their achievements. Am I on T V.? j.v. achieved 6-0 record Top: Coach Trenary, Margie Smoker. Char King. Cathy Nightengale. The girls’ Junior Varsity players didn't quit winning when basketball season ended. When volleyball time rolled around they picked up right where they left off. Again they captured first place league honors. This time they completed a perfect 6-0 league record. They weren't shy about playing non-league schools. Two games into their season they traveled to Cold-water and beat the J.V. Cardinals in three games, coming from behind in the first game with a determined 16-14 victory. They finished the season with an overall record of 9-2. For never playing volleyball in a team situation before, these young freshman and sophomore ladies are not hesitant about what they want to accomplish. They have a positive attitude towards improving and success. This attitude has made their desire to learn, excel, and achieve more eminent. The team, plagued by the loss of a few key players who were moved up to varsity competition, finished the season with much enthusiasm and hustle. The lone win of the season came against an arch baseball rival. Climax-Scotts. Trailing 7-0 after several innings of play, the Magi rallied and came on strong for a fine 9-10 finish. Don Weiderman finished the season as the team's leading hitter batting .236. Glen Joesph and Larry Swartz handled the bulk of the pitching duties with Steve Frisbie aiding in relief. Marc Mott showed a key batting eye as he led the team with 23 walks. Marc also made several fine defensive plays during the season. Dan Sharp was the team's base thief as he pilfered 14 bases and managed to strike out 5 times in 18 games. 39 girls’ softball Top; Coach Curlis. The softball team compiled a 6-7 record in their second season. The team got lots of experience as we fielded five freshmen and five sophomores. Midway in the season, we had a very unlucky break—Sherry Adams ankle. Sherry was a veteran player and starter. With a 6-7 record by a young team, we feel that the season was a success and are looking forward to an even better season next year. 40 varsity cheers! 41 J-V football cheerleaders J.V.: Debbie Emmel. This year the Varsity Club consisted of forty-six members. Twenty-nine new members were admitted. In order to be a member of the Varsity Club, students must participate in a varsity sport for one year and earn a varsity letter. Throughout the year, members of the club are actively involved in a variety of fund-raising activities. The club sold Magi hats this year and is responsible for a concession stand during athletic events. Their largest contribution this year was a pop machine for student use after school. With the proceeds from these activities, they purchased a neck machine for the weight machine. Their contributions are greatly appreciated! 50 Vice President-Ron Jordan, President-Barb King. The class worked diligently for nine weeks to bring “Oz to life. A surrealistic approach was used, combining the elements of both traditional and modern theatre. Many hours were spent perfecting the elements of acting, characterization, make-up, and costuming. The play began and slowly the audience was drawn into the fantasy world with some rather exciting experiences. As the lovely Dorathy, Kim Wickey sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and Diane Smith displayed her dancing talents as the Scarecrow in the number, If 1 Only Had A Brain. Randall Wolfe as the Tin Man, sang If 1 Only Had a Heart,” and Ken Kruszka, as the Lion, added a great deal of humor with his rendition of “If I Only Had the Nerve. The weather was beautiful! We tasted the pizza and ice-cream specialties, developed our dancing styles at a Disco, and put our feet in the still cold Mediterranean. Monday we took an excursion to St. Paul de Vence, a small town perched on a hilltop, and visited the Picasso Museum in another town called Antibes. Tuesday we set out for Monte Carlo in Monaco. There we visited Jacques Cousteau's Oceanographic Museum (very impressive) and saw the changing of the guards at Prince Ranier and Princess Grace’s palace. On the way back we visited a perfume factory (Fragonard) and walked through another small hilltop town, Eze. We returned in time for our last dinner in Nice and for some more dancing. Wednesday, we headed for Italy, past Monaco, into the mountains, away from the Mediterranean. In Italy, we noticed many shell-shot buildings, unreparied from WW II and stopped in a town to buy supplies for a picnic. We entered the Mont Blanc tunnel (7 miles long) in Italy and exited in France, going past the ski resort town of Chauisuiy. We went into Switzerland to spend two nights and a day in Geneva. Thursday, we visited the United Nations building (where the conference on the pollution of the sea is underway) and then stopped at the famous clock and watch store of Bucherer. In Geneva, some of us experienced food shopping in a 'su-permarche', which was a lot of fun, and quite interesting. The food selection was very different. We also visited the Old Town. Friday morning we left Geneva and headed west toward the wine country of Beaune, where we visited a wine cellar and gladly sampled the three glasses of wine offered to us. From there we went to Fontainecleau, for a quick peek at Napoleon's favorite retreat, then into Paris. After dinner, some students took a bus ride of Paris by night, while others walked up the Champs Elysees. Saturday, we visited Notre Dame Cathedral, Les Invalides (where Napoleon is buried) the Louvre Museum and the Eiffle Tower. Several students got to visit the famed nightclub Le Lido. We left Sunday morning, and a sad departure it was! The students had become quite good friends with students from other groups, and good byes were difficult. My husband and 1 enjoyed being 'Ma' and ‘Pa’. There are already a lot of things the girls tell me they miss: French bread, the weather, and the guys! 61 co-op Top: Jeff Pattison. Danny Ross. Anthony Drago came to Colon after spending several years as principal at Coldwater High School. Due to his support, this years Homecoming was one of the most successful in Colon's history. Students from each class were actively involved in the various activities during the week and the float contest was more impressive than ever. This year, for the first time. Colon sponsored a Snow Festival. Again, students were involved and appreciated the opportunity to participate in a new activity. He has not only brought new changes, but is receptive to suggestions. We hope that through the combined efforts of students, faculty, and administrators we can continue to make some positive changes at Colon High School. 75 That’s a big 4-10 good buddy. 76 board of education Loren Carlisle—Trustee. Again this year, the seniors of Colon High School took a week break from all the hasles of school, work, and being bored, and ventured to the southern state where the ocean and the sky meet, and the sand is white. Yes, we went to Florida, and what a time we had! We left Colon on Saturday the twenty-second of April at 8:00. We rode and rode and stopped here and there to eat. It was a boring twenty-four hours, but worth it! The next morning we arrived in Orlando. We ate breakfast and then went off to Cypress Gardens. The water show, and the sights were beautiful! We went back and checked into the 1776 Inn. Monday, we had the whole day at Disney World, then back to the hotel and the night was ours! Tuesday, we left for Sea World, and at 2:00, we left for Daytona Beach. Our hotel was right on the beach and we had lots of fun enjoying ourselves in the sun, ocean, and pool. Wednesday we had all day to lay in the sun or do whatever we wanted. Thursday we left for St. Augustine and looked around there. We arrived in Colon about 5:30 Friday. Forty-four burned, tired, and cranky seniors and chaperones rolled off the bus, thus making the Senior Trip of ’78 a memory like all the ones before, but one that will be remembered by all who participated for a lifetime. It was where!? 95 Where's the Party? Coach Says No! Sight at Disney World. The Three Stooges. Plus Two. Snow Festival Queen. Barb King and King, Richard Hostetler. Colon High School bid farewell to two people who have given a great deal of their time and talents to the school and community. Sue Rice came to Colon High School in 1972 and spent five years working as a secretary, “counselor,” aide,” and “advisor for many confused faculty members and administrators. The job of secretary, in itself, is not an easy one, and Sue assumed many responsibilities above and beyond the call of duty. Her efforts are greatly appreciated by all! Gary Groenendyk began teaching business at Colon High School in 1975. In addition to his regular teaching assignments, Gary was assistant J.V. Football coach. He was a member of the Lions Club and actively involved in school and community activities. We thank both for their contributions and wish them luck and happiness in their new positions. 118 119 Oklahoma in spotlight Front: Shelly Parlin, Brett |ohnson. Dawn Campbell. Ken Kruszka. Dancers were: Kathleen Shoop, Lance Thornton, Tom Perry, Lori Davis, Shelley Parlin, Don Muckle, Vicky Tomlinson, Deb MeKercher, Mike Brew, Marc Mott, Toni Buchanan, Kim Richardson, and Todd Schwartz.
