The Colon Hi News, the high school newspaper, is prepared by the entire class. Each member of the class had an opportunity to work at the various duties of a newspaper staff by rotating the members. Special notice is here given to the faithful pressmen; Don Dean, Roger Hall, and Gordon Custer who gained valuable experience in the operation of the mimeograph. office assistants Row 1: Rosalie Outman Audrey Neaman Dixie Loudenslager Diane Ross Mary Beth Kline Susan Warlick Nadine Broker Sandra Ranch Row 2: Rosalee Holderman Janet Troyer Sandra Johnson Karen Andrews Karolynn Barnes Georgia Myers Elaine lobe Mr. W. Our class officers were Frank Piliplck, president; William Broker, vice-president; Dixie Loudens lager, secretary; David West, treasurer; James Lepley, reporter; and John Ray Hacken-burg and Bruce Snook, Student Council members. Our class advisors were Mr. Leroy Evarts and Mr. Gerald Delling. Our Homecoming candidate was Dixie Louden-slager. In our sophomore year we had eighty-one student. Georgia Myers was elected president, Dixie Loudenslager as vice-president, Frank Piliplck as secretary, David West as treasurer, John Ray Hackenburg as reporter, and Mary Beth Price and William Broker as Student Council members. Our class advisors, Mr. Deloss Inman and Mrs. Lorene Meggison, lead us on our winding way. Patsy Case was our Homecoming candidate. For initiation we made the freshmen wear signs. At the evening party they had to roll onions across the gym floor and take part in the Witches Brew. Our hearts were grieved by the loss of our class-mate, John Chapman. At the beginning of our junior year our students num bered sixty-one. Our capable officers were: David West, president; James Lepley, vice-president; Marsha Dougherty, secretary; Roger Bryan, treasurer; John Stark, reporter; and Thelma Masters and Stephen Foster, Student Council members. Our class advisors were Mrs. Ramona Thaxton and Miss Helen Ressor. Our Homecoming candidates were Dixie Loudenslager and Julie McQueen. Our Wolverine delegates were Harolynn Barnes, Frank Piliplck, and Dennis Schumaek-er. In December we were confronted with presenting a play, The Cinderella Complex. With the help of our directors, Mrs. Mary DeCair and Mr. Royden Swa-ffield, we succeeded in raising a considerable amount of money. Our Junior Prom was entitled Tender as the Night , and we had a wonderful time decorating the gy with a lowered ceiling complete with the stars and moon and a flowered fence. The toastmaster was Dennis Schumacker and the toastmistress was Dixie Loudenslager. With our eye on the future needs we worked energetically on two money making projects, a slave day and selling boxed candy. Our last and best year at last dawned on us. Sixty members were led by a fine president, Dennis Schumacker. His assistants were William Broker as vice-president, Thelma Master as secretary, Dixie Loudenslager as treasurer, Karo-lynn Barnes as reporter, and David West and Stephen Foster as Student Council members. Mr. Charles Thaxton and Mr. Robert Dunton were our capable advisors. Our Homecoming candidates were Dixie Loudenslager and Ute Leister. The crown was awarded to Ute Leister. David West and Stephen Foster were elected president and vice-president of the Student Council. David West was football Captain. William Broker, Gary Hughes, and David West received All State Honorable Mention in football. We were very proud of John Stark, William Broker, and David West because of their high rating in the National Merit Scholarship Test and they received letters of commendation for academic achievement. Patsy Case was Pep Club president, Gary Hughes was F.F.A. president, Janet Troyer and Mary Beth Kline were head librarians, Elaine lobe was D.A.R. Pilgrim, and Ruth Meggison was our Annual editor. John Ray Hackenburg was drum major and student band director. Der.nis Schumack-er was our sectional chairman at Government Day at the Sturges-Young Auditorium and Thelma Master was our capable reporter. Ute Leister was our exchange student from Germany. We enjoyed having her as fellow-classmate. We shall always treasure the memories of our trip to Washington, D.C. and New York City, our diplomas. Commencement exercises, and the many years spent with our classmates working, living, and playing together. Coton Township Library Class OfflCCRS Junior: JoAnn Weirich, Pres. Irene Darragh, Treas. Starting strongly, the Magi were unable to overcome powerful Constantine and were dropped from contention by the two key losses. Led by Seniors Bill Broker and Denny Schumacher, the Magi are looking forward to defending their district title as this goes to press. Under the leadership of President Gary Hughes, the Colon Chapter consisting of 30 members commenced activities in September for an eventful year. Several members won prizes for their exhibits at the St. Joesph County Fair. Two members of the chapter, Gary Hughes and John Outman, represented the FFA at the State Convention. Money-making activities included garden-seed sales and two dances. April 10 was the highlight of the year with members, parents, and friends participating in the annual FFA banquet, at which we presented awards. Honorary Chapter Farmers presented our newly elected Chapter Sweetheart at the Sweetheart Ball. Parties and get-togethers concluded our activities for the year. Several members received pigs from our swine chain and the dairy chain was continued. left to right Karen Andrews, Gloria Delp, John Stark, Thelma Masters, Diane Ross, Diane Hughes, Georgia Myers, Sue Lane, Frank Noga, Kathy Oldenburg, Steve Foster, Elaine lobe, Judy Edwards, Carl Pollack, John Hackenburg, Bruce Snook, Arlene Wagner, Christine Ryan, Julie McQueen, Ray Thrams, Pam Williams, and Frank Plllplck. CINDERELLA COMPLEX This was not merely another Cinderella play. True the poor, noble Cinderella was In her torn black dress cleaning the grate; the stepmother and stepsisters were In lovely gowns. But there the similarity ended. Cinderella, the killjoy, -was resentful of her father's remarriage. She even appeared In work clothes and tears at the wedding reception. When her kindly stepmother begged her to put on her pretty new clothes and her stepsisters told her they had a date for her for the ball, she only whined that the work would not do itself and therefore she thought she could not go. But when her stepsister's handsome boyfriend appeared on the scene she convinced him that she was being forced t« Stay at home and work. For awhile three romances' outcomes seem to be In doubt. At the ball she completely captured the vain and haughty Prince. And in the slipper scene when she was ready to go off to the palace she told her family they certainly would not be welcome to come and visit. This was not a disappointment but a relief to the family. Thus, in the end there was no one to stop them from being happy In their new found freedom. Row Is Mr. Dunton, Ute Liester, Bruce Snook, Pam Williams, Pasty Case, Mary Beth Price, Janet Troyer, Dixie Loudenslager Row 2: John Hackenburg, Steve Poster, Dick Jones, Prank Pillipick, Mike Ryan, David Hambright OLIVER TWIST Oliver Twist, child of the workhouse and parochial nurseries of London of the ninteenth century, has been a much wronged and ill treated youngster. After being apprenticed to Mr. Locrberry, the undertaker, where he slept among the shabby coffins of the dead, he escapes to London and the clutches of the wily Fagin and the artful Dodger. His innocence is rewarded by deceit and injustice until he is ransomed by Mr. Brownlow, a charitable if stuffy old gentleman. After gaining the love of Mr. Brownlow and his good mistress, Bedwin, he is captured again by the denizens of deceit and crime and is forced to participate in an audacious crime from which he comes away with a bullet in his shoulder and a pa,in in his heart. His remorse being ministerd to by a kind and virtuous young lady, he finally attains the rich rewards appropriate to his kind and generous nature. The Junior Play Cast included: Margaret Borgert, Opal; Bruce Decker, Sol; Jon Ritter, Brad; Connie Warken-tlne, Gloria; Larry Watson, Officer Joe Yankee; Weldon Johnson, Doctor. The play was under the direction of Robert Dunton. EVERYBODY LOVES OPAL by John Patrick The audience felt suspense, sadness, happiness, and plain ole silliness as our cast put on our play. Faithfully, Opal believed that everyone was virtuous or real genuine . Even when she met three perfume bootleggers (Brad, Sol, and Gloria) and fell for their line, she kept her faith In mankind. Somehow each accident , which were attempts on her life, that these three planned she managed to ease out of each one with a positive attitude toward life. Our play was full of funny lines and funny action but besides these It had a moral, to have faith In mankind. As Opal would say If you have friends nothing real bad can happen to you and that's the truth .
