Our officers were: Ray- mond Saxman, Presidentg Tom Penrod, Vice-Presidentg Shirley Wagner, Secretaryg Diane Freeland, Treasurerg Judy Carpenter, Student Council memberg and Mary Tray- ling, Reporter. JoAnn Perry was our Homecoming candidate and Shirley Wagner, our candidate for Halloween Queen. We were given a guiding hand by our advisors, Mrs. Virginia Ash and Mr. Lawrence Starr. For our initiation, we had to wear an onion around our neck, carry a pall, and polish shoes. Our get-ups included: long un- derwear, coveralls on backwards, fancy dresses for the boys, and plenty of make-up. After recuperating, we gave a return party. Fifty-seven ambitious students started out as sophomores. Tom Penrod was our Presldentg Bob Weaver, Vice-Presidentg Shirley Wagner, Secretaryg Diane Freeland, Treasurerg Judy Carpenter and Jerry Eberhard, Student Council membersg and Mari- lynn Farrand, Reporter. Shirley Wagner was our Homecoming candidateg Diane Free- land, Halloween candidateg and Mary Ward, hth of July Queen. Our advisors this year were Mr. Melvin Flowers and Mr. Bruce Loomis. There were forty-eight hustllng Juniors to start the year. Tom Penrod was re- elected President with Mary Ward, Vlce-Presldentg Shirley Wagner, Secretaryg Diane Freeland, Treasurerg Marllynn Farrand and Jerry Eberhard, Student Council membersg and Judy Carpenter, Reporter. Mrs. Flora Ambs and Miss Helen Reesor were our ad- visors. Our Junior Play, Crazy But Cute was directed by Mr. Malcolm McQul11an. We edited our flrst lssue of the Colon Hl News in April. Shirley Wagner was Homecom- ing Queen, and Judy Carpenter was our candidate for Halloween Queen. She was also the hth of July Queen. We sent Diane Freeland to Wolverine Girls State. Our theme for the Prom was nEnchanted Evenlngn ln a Hawaiian setting. A wish- ing well in the center and Hawaiian murals at each end of the gym furnished the exotic atmosphere. A volcano, towering in the background, and a rock garden added to the decorations. Judy Carpenter was the toastmlstress and Jerry Eberhard was the toastmaster. As Seniors we elected Jerry Eberhard as Presldentg Bill Esseltlne, Vlce-Pres- ldentg Shirley Wagner, Secretaryg Diane Freeland, Treasurerg Sandra Hughes and Jack Barton, Student Council membersg and Rita Mast, Reporter. Our advisors were Mr. W.H. Judd and Mr. Manley Van Voorhees. We were proud to have had Colon High Schoo1's first exchange student, Regina Rudolph, ln our Senior Class. She has earned A and B grades in our subjects and maintained a full activity schedule. She comes from l23DOldenburg,l.O. Elisabethstrasse l6a, Germany. Our Senior Play, nLuclndy Peck From Cabbage Neckn, was directed by Miss JoAnne Purcell. Diane Freeland was Homecoming Queeng Mary Yeatter, Bill Esseltine, Mary Ward, and Tom Penrod were Colon Hi News Editorsg Diane Freeland was D.A.R. Pilgrlmg Sandy Hughes was President of the Future Teachersg Sharon Hovis, Head Usherg and Jack Barton, President of the band. Marilynn Farrand was Cherry Pie Champg Mary Yeatter, Betty Crocker Future Homemakerg Mary Trayling, Pep Club Presidentg Regina Rudolph, Bible Club Presldentg Rita Mast, Head Librariang and Shirley Wagner and Dick Mathis, Annual Editors. Bob Roach was football captaing Tom Penrod, Varsity Club Presidentg Bob Roach and Tom Penrod, basketball captains. Marilynn Farrand and Diane Freeland were cheerleaders for four years. Jerry Eberhard and Richard Janes were Government Day Leaders with Shirley Wagner and Diane Freeland as re- corders. Richard Janes was F.F.A. President and won honors in public speaking. Mary Yeatter, Sandra Hughes, and Marilynn Farrand were Valedictorian, Salutatorian and Historian respectively. Our senior trip was scheduled for New York and Washington. We chose blue and white for our class colors and the red rose for our class flower. nToday Decides Tomorrown was our class motto. Our Commencement speaker was Mr. John Shiraef of Charlotte, Michigan, noted traveler behind the iron curtain. 19
