[$1] FOREWORD As graduation time approaches, we look forward to the time when we will be able to explore the unknown world around us. We will carry with us all the knowledge and learning we have acquired at Hunting- ton High School. As we recall the many wonderful events we shared during our five years in high school, we shall re- member, especially, the places where we gathered to study, to play, and just to be together. Our yearbook, the HUNTINGTON- IAN, will help us to remember the impor- tant landmarks which contributed to our happiness, pleasures, and even our dis- appointments. We shall remember the eighth grade, our freshman, sophomore and junior years and particularly our magnificent days as seniors. We shall remember 1967 for IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR. ed; cation MRS. MAMYE E. BACOTE With contriteness of spirit, devoted- ness of heart and respect for humility, the graduating class of 1967 dedicates this edition of the HUNTINGTONIAN to Mrs. Mamye E. BaCote, a versatile social studies teacher who has vastly enriched our understanding of world affairs. Whether it be world history, geography, or United States history, as she weaves her intellectual spell, the affect is the same--history made alive. The same warmth, friendliness, and 6 sincereity that is exemplified in her class- room is also felt by those who have come to know her as a teacher and friend. Her devotion, patience, and understanding have made a real contribution to our de- velopment. Among the extracurricular activities offered at Huntington, you can find Mrs. BaCote at work as sponsor of the National Senior Honor Society and as co-chairman of the Student Council. The warmth generated by her dy- namic personality has won her count- less friends. Here, Mrs. BaCote takes time out to chat with seniors. Mrs. BaCote is a graduate of Virginia Union University with an A.B. degree in social studies. She received the M.A. degree in United States History from Hampton Institute. The wife of Theodore E. BaCote, one of our football coaches, and the mother of two sons, Theodore III and Derek. DEDICATION We dedicate this page in memory of our beloved classmate, Edward Tyson, | | who before his demise in the Spring of 1966, was once a part of our many | | activities. ) N EDWARD TYSON We lost a friend long years ago Awhile our paths together lay, And we were happy by the way | Until we parted--years ago. | From out each other's lives we passed; Each went his way, but yet, at last, Or here, or in eternity, God will give back our friend to us. --Paton H. O, wondrous God, of beauty and all wisdom Spread out thy hand and show us all thy might. Show how each one of us may gain more wisdom If we should live by thy Great Rule of Right. Dear Huntington, to Thee we sing our praises Of times gone by and never more shall be. Within your walls we gain a lasting knowledge Of faith and hope and love that flows from Thee. With humble hearts we raise our voices high We love you dear when we are far or nigh. CHORUS O God, as we review the worth of Huntington, Realize do we that all strength comes from Thee. Still guide our minds to reach a greater height And help us know how thankful we should be. ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RENDERS INVALUABLE SERVICES A school as large and complex as ours cannot be rated highly through the efforts of one person. Thus, our Assistant Prin- cipal, Mr. C. C. Johnson, stands next in line to receive our praise. In an effort to make Huntington a more efficiently and progressive school. Mr. Johnson works diligently with the students to help them adjust to the school program. His many duties include director of summer school, study hall supervisor, program director, and disciplinarian. K = ФА n: As the demands for efficiency become greater, Mr. C. C. Johnson finds having helpers make matters go more smoothly. Mary Gayle and Yvonne Holland assist in checking the principal's list for students needing class admission slips. DEAN OF GIRLS FOCUSES HER INTEREST ON BUILDING CHARACTER STRENGTHENING OUR LIVES WITH GUIDANCE Through the years our ultimate objective has remained before us --to excel. Thinking over the past, the road over which we have at last ascended, we must consider the remaining portion. As we consider this remaining portion, we must continue to cling, as previously, to the in- valuable information which has been imparted to us by our Guidance Director, Mrs. E. M. Green. Barry Lockett, a senior, pays visit to Mrs. Green for wise counseling concern- ing college requirements and personal achievements. In a new and purposeful period of intel- lectual growth, students have been aided by guidance in their adjustment to the many expectations of a changing society and world. Mrs. Effie M. Green, Assistant Princi- pal and Dean of Girls, confers with hun- dreds of students weekly in an effort to help them adjust to school life, solve prob- lems, and answer the many questions which plague the adolescent mind. Admin- istering test and keeping student records are additional guidance duties which must be performed by Mrs. Green. Consider that I laboured not for myself only, but for all them that seek my guidance. 5 DEAN OF BOYS SHOWS PRIDE IN STUDENTS ACCOMPLISHMENTS Mr. W. H. Truly the organization has become an active and dynamic liaison between the student body and the administration; it is a leader in the Peninsula and State organi- zations. Many of the local and state offi- cers have been products of our Council and we have been represented on panels at the national level. Miss Smith's foresight in organizing Leadership Classes has served to train 17 large numbers of students to assume offices in the school and the community. As a student body, we say thank you, Miss Smith, for your role in aiding us to attain higher scholastic and ethical standards, and a greater and keener appre- ciation for cultural activities and last, in aiding us to equip ourselves to take our places in a democratic society. Your versatility, your creativity, your indefatigability and your inspirational guidance will remain to us a joy forever. Mrs. V. James, the personal secretary to the principal, finds typing letters, keeping statistics, answering the telephone, recording grades, making the morning announcements and keeping an accurate record of the school staff and personnel but a few of her many task. Assorting attendance cards is one of the many duties of Mrs. T. General. A continuing follow-up of students is one means of evaluating and improving the effectiveness of the school program. Mrs. Seabron realizes that a complete and accurate record of every child is im- portant. 18 EVIDENT IN SECRETARIAL STAFF Mrs. H. Lawson concentrates upon the hundreds of federal forms and pupil affadavits which must be completed and filed in the office of the school board. The school bookkeeper, Mrs. L. Kea is responsible for a complete record of all financial trans- action at Huntington. IT WAS A VERY GOOD DAY Still able to smile after a hard day of work, the secretarial staff takes time to pause for our photographer. 7 GUIDANCE AWAKENS STUDENT INTEREST Ly MANY AREAS | The guidance program at Huntington aims to assist students in understanding themselves and their problems; to enable them to make good use of their personal and environmental resources; and to help them make wise choices in dealing with problems of adjustment and guidance. Lara Butts utilizes the services offered by the Guidance Department in obtaining information from Mr. Holmes about occupational possibilities. М. Wilson assists Lara Brown in filling out her ap- plication to take а college entrance examination. 20 For an effective program, individual counseling must be available to all pupils. Mrs. V. Batten assists Joanne Newman in determining which courses she should take in order to complete her graduation requirements, A good student does not need a large sum of money to attend college. Mr. С. М. Carter explains to Paula Pugh how she may qualify for one of the many scholar- ships available to high school students. Information in the area of ос- cupational education and social guidance is made available to students. Carolyn Batts, LaVonne' Harrell, Shirley Howard and Paula Pugh find Mrs. Lipscomb an attentive listener as they dis- cuss their problems. The web of dead- lines entangles many of the students and teachers into spending their Saturday mornings, and holidays completing unfinished business: writing and typing editorials, iden- tifying countless faces, drawing layouts, and other such tasks. Through the efforts and cooperation of the administration, the faculty, the student body, and the community, the Huntingtonian staff is able to present to you a panoramic view of the 1966-67 school year. Smiles of success beam from the faces of surrounding advertisement solicitors as they turn in their patron list to Miss B. J. Barham. Shirley Howard and Darilyn Vassar busily type captions describing the pictures to appear in the yearbook. A HARD DAY'S NIGHT Saturday mornings and many nights are spent trying to meet the never ending deadlines. Mr. G. R. Blakeney, year- book advisor, gives instructions to Morris Williams, co-editor, on how the hard work is taken out of scaling and cropping by the use of the scaleograph. J BELIEVE WE ARE GONNA MAKE IT Editor-in-chief, Mary Haynes and Thelma Courtney, co-editor, discuss pictures for various layouts. BAND DIRECTOR Few people realize the extent of preparation that is required to pro- duce a band of Huntington's caliber. Director, Wray Herring has assem- bled a succession of extremely capa- ble bands during his tenure as band director at Huntington High School. The secret of his success may be the elaborate preparation he demands from band participants and the pride they derive from belonging to one of the best bands in this area. THE MAKING OF A Band members are taught to march in formations. 70 BAND After qualifying for a posi- tion in the Viking band, top candidates are issued uniforms. The grandeur of the famed Hunt- ington High School Marching Band is equaled only by the superb per- formance of its fine group of majorettes. The long hours of practice prove beneficial as Hunt- ington's band enters the field playing the Viking Loyalty song. IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR A Viking supporter at the beginning of the football season did not have to be a soothsayer to predict a winning season for the 1966-67 school year Peninsula VIA Champions; however, the team exceeded even this accomplishment and fought its way to the exalted position of state cham- pions. Even the most optimistic Hunting- tonian could not have foreseen the opponent crushing machine which rumbled over ten strong teams for the school's first unde- feated and untied season since 1950. That both the explosive offense and dev- astating defense were alternately deciding factors in crucial games thro ughout the Season is indicative of the balance and esprit de corps possessed by the team. Although the team played as a unit, veweral individuals were selected as nf standing players. CORONATION INITIATES HOMECOMING WEEK The theme of the school's annual coronation was Love's Mystic Smile. In a formal extrava- ganza Miss Gloria Clinton was crowned the 1966- 67 Miss Homecoming. Loveliness, charm, and enticement were all invested in the royal court of the coronation. 76 Pageantry, excitement, and color filled Huntington's football stadium in October 29th as Viking followers observed the homecom- ing activities. Miss Homecoming, Gloria Clinton, a charming and personable senior was elected by her classmates to represent them on this occasion. Gloria not only reigned as Miss Homecoming, but she was elected President of the senior class. She is also a member of the Band, the Science Club and the Senior National Honor Society. The program recognizes the fact the goals of education for these pupils must be in keeping with their capacities, limitations, and interest. The major concern is training for participation in the occupational world. The classes seek further to develop the individual as a well integrated personality and a good citizen and to discover his strengths and weaknesses. ARTHUR BOLDEN ROSA BOLDEN ыы KÉ. They're built efficiently and well only by men whose skills and knowledge are broad. That's why Newport News begins at the beginning with its own selective Apprentice School. High School graduates enter on the basis of academic record. But selectivity doesn't stop there. In classroom and shop, in the drafting room and out in the yard, each man's GOOD SHIPS START HERE special abilities are watched and developed. Some become skilled and versatile ma- chinists. Others become expert electricians or precision tool makers. Many become super- visors. Some earn scholarships for advanced training at colleges and technical schools. We think the School's a pretty inspiring place, because its end results are good men and good ships. Zeigler Our year has been filled with moments of laughter, excitement, friendship, and study. Our days have been like a one-way street that we will never travel again. Many of these days may have seemed insignificant; but these seemingly in- significant days contained activities that made our year memorable. Whether cheering our team to victory, cramming for a qui z, or having the time of our lives at the dance, we will come to treasure these moments for they made „A VERY GOOD YEAR. Our time has been wisely spent in learning and working most assuredly toward our later goals of success. We wish to acknowledge the help given us by our parents and teachers. We realize that our many successes were possible because of their help and we are very appreciative. 200 = s s Rs = ٤ u nu E Ы А a LEEE 201 The 1967 HUNTINGTONIAN staff acknowledges the support, interest, and cooperation of our administrators: MR.
