Here we've known success; we've experienced defect; we've heard The sound of laughter,- we've felt the sting of Tears; we've worked hard and we've played happily Together. For many of us These have been five of The most pleasant years of our lives. In The following pages we have Tried to depict through The media of pictures and words some of the most impbrfonf activities that have Token place during our years, particularly the last one, within These walls. r- mmm- uo-w-v mmrw- - w-r m n--- ,-, ; . 7 a ,AA- , Principalis Message To the graduates of 1957, it is a pleasure for me to extend greetings to you who are completing your secondary education this year. You have iust reasons to be proud of the accomplishments represented by your graduation. It will soon be yours to assume the role of responsible adult citizens. Those of us who have gone before have bequeathed to you a sorry social inheritance. We have ' been so concerned with planting the seeds of selfishness, fear, and distrust that the principles of peace have been woefully neglected. The industrial and social structures of the American economy abound with countless opportunities for each at you to locate some gainful form of occupation in which to earn an honorable living. Remember that your best demands a constant and diligent application to the task at hand and a persistent drive to improve. Lite is a social venture,- no man stands alone. There will always be direct or indirect contact with others. Accord such friendship, dignity, and respect to others as you wish for yourselves. We trust that the loyalty and love that you presently have for your school and each other will grow stronger with the passing of the years. Finally the faculty and administrative staff of your school wish that you maintain a close relationship with them and wish you to know that they stand with a ready willingness to offer such assistance as they my be able in order to insure for each of you a good life. m $ a 1 WWVMW; Mr. .1 WWW WNW ; '- U H u mm ' a; r,;::::;;:;g' W MM + Newport News School Board LEFT TO RIGHT: Mrs. Angelo Lone, Secretary to Mr. Green, Mr. S. This program enables students who are seniors at the college to get actual practice, for six weeks, in teaching in their moior and minor fields. As a result of the experience gained, students go into teaching better prepared to cope with classroom situations. They discover their weaknesses and strengths and in their last six weeks of life on the campus, they attempt to strengthen themselves. Proof of the fact that we pay more than lip service to this principle is our extensive athletic program here. Our athletes are not so much concerned with winning as with participating; not so much concerned with bringing glory to Huntington as with representing the school well; and not so much concerned with personal achievement as with working well with the group. Whether the game played be football, basketball, -track, basebaIl-vorsity or inter-scholastic-the aim is to fulfill the ancient maxim A sound mind in a sound body. Since neither can realize its full potentiality uniess the other does so, we feel especially keen the necessity for insuring the fact that every student who passes through Huntington knows the value of a sound body; and inosfar 05 his native abilities allow, it is our intent to help him to develop it. 116 l956 Football Squad FIRST ROW: Left To Righ'r-Edwcrd Williams, James Butler, Eddie Valen- tine, Co-Captoins-Earl Foison 8x Willie Dolby, William Robinson, Franklin Glee, Joseph Anthony, and Aubrey Herbin.
