We, the members of the 1955 graduation class gratefully and affectionately dedicate this book to one whose guidance, and adherence to those ideals and principles of good living and citizenship have made a profound impression on our lives and have helped us to charter our course for the future. —MR. MILTON С. CALLOWAY 4 ریس нна n IN LI vo oe y единице ISDN сама ы, Ad chnowledgement It would be impossible to list the names of all those who have contributed so graciously of their time, talent and means to make this our 1955 Huntingtonian a success. To you we are deeply indebted and we, the members of the Senior Class, wish to express our sincere appreciation. WESLEY RANEY A.B., Lincoln University M.A., Ohio State W. D. SCALES A.B., J. C. Smith M.A., Iowa I. P. о, 5 Message 7 My young friends the privilege of extend- ing you greetings on your graduation day is unquestionably a highly satisfying experience. You have just reasons to be proud of your ac- complishment. The pleasure we derive from the belief that we have shared in your development is a joy beyond your years to understand. Г should advise that you develop, a dy- namic and reasonable faith in your possibilities to achieve. Study your own talents ánd interests in order that you may determine for yourselves some worthy and attainable life objective. Where defeat is inevitable no challenge exists. Seek to avoid the despair and frustrations that in- variably follow attempts to accomplish the im- possible. Opportunities provided in the world of work are sufficiently varied as to provide each of you an excellent chance to locate and engage in some honorable and gainful endeavor. What sort of world do we have today? Our manufacturing and productive skills are un- surpassed; industry and invention have created a legion of new trades and professions, and science has made unprecedented progress in its war against diseases and the things that cause men to die—Alas, we are unable to resolve human tensions so as to live in harmony with the peoples of the earth. It is now your responsi- bility to understand and encourage all move- ments calculated to promote a more abundant peace. It has been our purpose to aid you in the development of such knowledge, skills, and ap- preciations that would improve the quality of your adjustments. Hold fast to these truths, for they are good. Our earnest prayers and fervent hopes are yours. Let HIM WHO alone can chart the perfect course take the helm of your life and the harbor will be assured. Place: Huntington High School Characters: Narrator 300 frightened and excited Eighth Graders ACT I — Scene I The curtain slowly rises on a large group of stu- dents assembled in the Shipyard Community Center. Mr. Scales: Welcome to our Huntington Family. Im sure your stay here will be happy and prosperous. As you can see, we're in the process of adding more rooms and an auditorium to our school. To accom- modate everyone, we will have double shifts. Т е eighth and ninth graders will come to school from 7:48 a. m. to 11:30 a. ni. The other students will come from 12:00 to 3:45 p. m. Eighth Grader: What a shame! Early morning classes and the upper classmen won't even notice me. Mr. Scales: Everyone will pass to his last year's homeroom except eighth graders. Narrator: The student body leaves. Mr. Rainey, the assistant principal, steps forward. Mr. Rainey: These will be your homeroom teachers; Mr. E. N. Robinson, Miss Duncan, Mrs. Cobb, Miss Watkins, Miss Whittington, Mr. H. N. Johnson, Mrs. Dawkins, and Mrs. Seaborne. Narrator: Mr. Rainey assigns each student to a homeroom. Thus the eighth graders begin life at Hunt- ington. During the second semester, the school is com- 42 pleted, and the regular school day schedule is observed, much to the eighth grader's delight. The new audi- torium is dedicated. The Eastern District Music Festival is held here, and many of us serve as guides. Scene П One Year Later Student: Oh boy! We really belong now. Say let's join some clubs. But which ones shall we join? Student: What about the choir? We're going to Philadelphia, this year. There's the band, and they will be getting new uniforms soon, also the Student Council, Math, Library, F.T.A., Motor, N.H.A., Hobby, and Science Clubs, and the Mirror Staff. Narrator: Yes, we each joined some clubs, and he choir went to Philadelphia. Т е first May Ball was held, and we helped initiate the Cadet Teachers. Scene III Sophomore Year Student: Well, two years down, three more to ро. But it’s fun. Just think, this year, we са be Waiters and Cigarette girls at the Prom. Narrator: We had the pleasure of welcoming our new music instructor, Mr. Bouldin, and seeing the Business Efficiency and Industrial Arts Clubs organized and joining our wide circle of extra curricular activities. Student: This year is almost over. lieve I made it through Biology. year! I still can't be- But next year is Prom Eleventh Grade, here we come. Тће curtain comes down on Act I. АСТ П ACT П — Scene 1 Eleventh grade. Dignified Juniors. Student: Let's start early, and organize our class, and start prom activities. Narrator: And so we did. Our class officers were: President, George Davis; Vice-President, Lowell Thomp- son; Secretary, Shirley Phillips; Assistant Secretary, Er- cell Green; Treasurer, Arthur Lepsey. Our prom theme was Hawaii-Tropical Paradise. The Diversified Occupa- tion program was instituted and the first football dance was held. This year we made history by having а junior, Mattie Hill, as homecoming queen. Her Junior Attendant was Betty Hopson. Student: What a year. ГИ never forget the prom. Although it was raining, the dance was a success. De- witt Cooke was superb. All the, students and faculty had a marvelous time. Even Mr. Scales was dancing a fancy waltz. This was an affair that will always remain vivid in our memories. Student: Yes, it was a fine year. We grew in many ways and began to appreciate many things that had no value to us before. The year ended with great anticipation for a profitable senior year. Scene П Commencement Night Narrator: Yes, here we are marching to that thrilling tune, “Pomp and Circumstance.” Do you see tears in our eyes? Why, of course. Think of all our joys and sorrows through the years. After the exercise, when the seniors are checking in their robes, the flood of memories began. Student: I think this year has been our best yet. Our officers were: President, Earl White; Vice-President, Robert Bell; Secretary, Joyce Scott; Assistant Secretary, Ethelene Batts; Treasurer, James Haynes; Chaplain, Lee Mangrum. To record our successful year, so that we could not forget, was our efficient Annual staff. 43 Student: And these beautiful rings. forever. Say, remember Class Day? ГИ keep mine Student: Ha, Ha! Yes. We were really in style, in our Burmuda attire. And our banquet. Those lovely pink and white carnations. Such dancing. Student: Do you remember Homecoming? Joyce Scott and Cleo Joyner were attendants to the Queen, and Kay Mangana was elected as the first Miss Viking. It was not all work and no fun. Most of us were in at least one extra-curricular activity. We participated in the Choir, Band, F.T.A., Business Efficiency Club, Science Club, Library Club, Social Studies Club, Dra- matics Club, Hobby Club, and the English Club. Others were the Auto Mechanics Club and the G.A.A. Student: Through these five years, we have certainly contributed to winning trophies and to bringing cham- pionship glories to each sport. On the Football team were William Kindred, Sylvester Rainey, Jack Avent, Phillip Smith, James Marshall, James Valentine, Walter Jordan, Charles Campbell, James Simmons, Joseph Buggs, Emmett Chapman, James Haynes, Grady Burgess, George Ruff, Eugene Blair, David Holmes, Bernard Chambers, Thomas Simpson and Gylinza Reed. І Basketball were William Kindred, James West, Herbert Strickland, Grady Burgess, James Simmons, George Davis, Robert Bell, and Gylinda Reed. In Baseball were Walter Jordan, James West, George Davis, James Marshall, William McNeill, Linwood Moore, and Earl White, and in Track were William Kindred, Phillip Smith, Joseph Buggs, Sylvester Rainey, James Marshall, Charles Campbell, James Simmons, Grady Burgess, James Haynes, George Ruff, Jack Avent, William Tucker, James Palmer, Leon Tynes, John Patterson, Ernest Anderson, and Thomas Simpson. Conclusion The laughing and talking continues, and the curtain slowly comes down. Narrator: Yes, the flood of remembering will go on and on. Truly we have made five great years of history, but the greatest is yet to be made. We wish to thank our parents and teachers for these wonderful years, for without their help and guidance, we couldn’t have come successfully through high school. Although we shall be taking our places in the various sections of the country, we will always remember our stay at Huntington High School. вк 5 іг, articipated in the Band, Choi ations, higher learning. chool Organiz Т еу plan to continue 44 ERAI ire 5 үс кузи аг а и == me [| y || || ТНЕ СІ,А55 РКОРНЕСУ Т е time is (е o'clock in the morning of June 10, 1965 and the occasion is the reunion of the famed 1955 graduating class of Hunting- ton High School. Before leaving school, the class decided to hold their reunion in a large city, which afforded many places of entertain- ment. However, since so many of the graduates have attained success and are constantly in the limelight, we on the committee felt that they would prefer quiet seclusion. The Florida Keys were suggested and the lucky choice was the island of Key Largo, which is the scene of our activities today. . Serving as hostesses today are Frances Wil- liams and Harrietté Tucker. Frances, who is head of the New York branch of the Horne- Williams School for Exceptional Children, and Harriette, who is doing U.S.O. work now, and at the present time is stationed in Japan, are seen lounging at the pier in their stylish cre- ations by the noted fashion designer, Barbara Bowes. Harriette, along with some of her co- workers, including Alice Stephens, Ann Sneed and Marion Welsh, also stationed in Japan, was glven a week's leave and flew here to be with us for the occasion. They are soon joined by Marvis Atkins and her fiancee, a French dress designer from Paris. She is flashing a huge diamond and they seem to be whispering sweet nothings to each other, but who can tell—it's all in French! Lazily basking on the white sands of the beach are some of the nurses from the Mayo 46 Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Included in this group are Charlotte Conde and her husband, James Haynes, Elizabeth Jacobs; Gladys Win- field, and Cleo Joyner. After a while, they are joined by Shirley Scott and Beatrice Jones, who are looking “mighty snazzy” in their Burmuda shorts and collie jackets, created by the popular fashion pace-setter, Mr. Aaron Boone (known to the fashion world as the “Sheik’’). A helicopter has just landed, piloted by that dare-devil, Don Lewis. First to alight is Ze- nobia Davis, air force nurse, currently stationed in Guam, and engaged to a handsome pilot. Among her companions we see the shapely physi- cal education teachers, Yvonne Jeffries, Betty Hopson, Justine Brown, and Jean Everette, It is rumored that the girls are doing a wonderful job with the students at Huntington and have turned out quite a few basketball stars. From them we learn that James West, Joseph Buggs, and Jack Avent are now coaching at dear old Huntington and having much success. Someone seems to have gotten a little air sick and is being carried off. We soon discover that it is о е other than Dr. James Palmer, noted physician and surgeon. Right now it looks like he could use a bit of his own medicine! Sauntering into the hotel, we are met by little Sharon Fraser, daughter of the model, Kay Mangana. Yvonne Carter, Jeanne Blevins, and Shirley Phillips, child psychologists, are hot on her heels. It seems that they are trying some of the latest techniques on the member's children who were unable to get baby sitters for the week- end and had to bring the kids along. Amid the screams we see a group of the mothers rushing to get their children. They were known to us in 1955 as Melissa Wiggins, Shirley Ruffin, Helen Cooper, Ethelene Batts, Audrey Black- well, Alice McMillan, and Pauline Reavis. If they decide to sue, they will be sure to have a successful case if they secure the services of the law firm of Campbell, Whittaker, White and Holmes, a prominent firm, now flourishing in Los Angeles, California. Their last case was one of a divorce between those famous stars Lassie and Rin-tin-tin. Speaking of techniques, get this — Shirley Armfield, now engaged to some chap named Madison from New York, is now a successful psychoanalyst there in the “big city.” She has rented a suite of rooms right here in the El Swanko and set up practice! Shirley came here for a week to rest, but as you know, she never was one to let any grass grow under her feet! . „In the south room of the El Swanko we find Dr. Carter Bradshaw and several of his private secretaries in a heated discussion over who gets to take dictation in his lap. Included In this group are Sarah Haskett, Addie Bates, Virginia Simmons, Lillian Poe, and Louise Park- er. Ernestine Walston, his private nurse, comes In and settles the whole mess. As we ente r, the girls are all looking for chairs! Making a grand entrance on the stairway above, we find none other than Grace Harris, the fabulous movie star, and a few of her many admirers, including Walter Jordan, Skinny Thomas, William Kindred, Floyd Keller and Ernest Brown. They have all begged her hand in marriage, but tonight, she informed them that she was promised to another — Leon Tynes, a famous architect. Rumor has it that he gave her a fine Eldurado, to seal the bargain! 47 In the powder room, primping and catching up on the latest happenings are those teachers and girls about town, Nola Wimberly, Gladys Pegram, Mary Stewart, Luvenia Bryant, Mary Clark, Juanita Christian and Frances Wylie. They are speaking of Verdelle Guinyard, who will soon be quiting her job as a teacher to take on the full-time job of a housewife with an outstanding commercial artist, William Scott, once a member of our fabulous senior class. The girls all look tres chic in their new creations by the eminent fashion designer, Leonard Tucker. Music comes floating out to us from the ballroom. There we find the songsters Freddie Everette and Annie Pringle, fresh from their show on Broadway. We had high hopes of se- curing the popular lyric-soprano, Miss Jacquelyn Hyman, of the Metropolitan to appear with them, but as she has the lead in the opera, “Tosca” she was unable to come. Singing in the cast with her are Clarence Smith and Jerome Lyons. We are proud to have had such a cele- brated singer as Miss Hyman as a member of our class! The band leader looks familiar. Why it is David Garrett. Some of the boys in the band waving high to us are Nathaniel Trower, William McNeil, George Small, Walter Steven- son, Willie Branch, Burnice Curtis, Jesse Chris- topher, Bernard Chambers, and James Winne- gan. Man what a racket — crazy, but cool! At a glance we see that the ballroom has been beautifully decorated for the coming event by John Carter and William Holloman, interior decorators. Here comes Lee Mangrum, rushing as usual, pencil behind ear and papers in hand. He invites us to view the beach house which he was engaged to decorate for the occasion. Some of his workers, James Valentine, William Tucker— the great bricklayers, Linwood Moore, Charles King, Daniel Lee, George Jones, Eugene Blair, Marcelle Chapell, and Leon Hayes call greetings to us as we peep inside. At a call from our hostesses we turn our gaze to the pier, where we see an enormous yacht, streamlined and beautiful. On deck is her captain, Sylvéster Rainey, tall, and sun- tanned and handsome. At his side is his loving wife, Joyce, who is now a noted stage and screen star. She recently won an oscar for her per- formance in the refilming of the “Thing” (т which she screamed all the way through). Tossing about in the waves and trying to make shore in a tired-looking motor boat is the great novelist, Raymond Prince. He has just returned from a round-the-world tour to get in- formation for his newest novel, “Т е Last Time 1 Saw Timbuctoo.” He finally makes it with the help of his friends Charles Slade and Ernest _Anderson. On shore, rushing to get autograpbs, we find Mary Randall, Annie Ridley, Mattie Hill, Loretta Palmer, and Rosie Crayton. О the other side of the island, patiently hoping for some poor lost souls to be washed ї , we spot Theodore Savage, a local undertaker and his faithful wife Arizona. It seems that business has slacked off a bit, down here in the healthy sunshine and all, and he is looking for extra work, Lying on the chase-lounge on the patio ot the El Swanko Hotel, in a pose that is making her husband Charlie's hair curl, we see Cath- erine Curtis, now a famous doctor in D. С. That Bikini bathing suit, which was designed by the noted creator, Jesse Jose Taylor, does won- ders for her! The messanger boy is bringing telegrams from some of the members expressing their re- 48 grets for not being able to make it. Among those who were unable to come are Herbert Strickland, Bessie Stanley, Betsy Murphy, and Clarence Johnson who. are attending the fight tonight in Madison Square Garden. We are proud to say that one of our clas s members, Hilton “Sugar Вау” Parker, is fighting for the title of Welterweight champion tonight and the experts say that he is sure to win. Also attend- ing the fight are Doctors Alpheus Rainey and Donald Simmons (who still make sure that nothing happens to our boy George Ruff), Doris Garrett, Cynthia Newby, and Ercelle Green. Another shining speed boat is docking at the pier. Its captain is the celebrated mniister of the National Presbyterian Church, the Rev- erend Dr. Eugene Butts, his charming wife, Peg- gy and their seven children: They have just returned from a much needed rest trip, in Hawaii, and are headed for home in Washing- ton, D. C. А loudblast of the ferry tells us that the rest of our class is here at last. Standing on deck eagerly awaiting the dock are Phillip Smith, James Simmons, Thomas Simpson, Herman Pitt- man, James Marshall, John Patterson, George Davis, ‘William Conde, Francena Fitchette, Rob- ert Bell, Clara Anderson, Catherine Hartwell, Thomas Shields, Harry Crayton, and Leroy Jones. As we rush out to meet them, we bid you a fond farewell, with the hopes that we will see you all at the next reunion of the 1955 Graduating Class of Huntington High School. So-long! P.S. Just in case you’re wondering about the expense of the occasion — don’t worry. The renouned statistician, Barbara Lane has the whole affair budgeted down to the last penny and you са be sure we'll get our money’s worth THE CLASS WILL We, the members of the 1955 Senior Class of Huntington High School, being sound in mind and body, make this our last will and testament. With both sorrow and joy, we do hereby bequeath our personalities, inclinations, and intellectual curiosity to the lower classmen, who have yet to master the three R’s. To the babies of the Huntington family, the eighth graders, we will the ability to adjust themselves to high school life. To the freshmen, our cool, calm, and dignified manners. “Graduation, not acceleration should be your goal.” To the members in the grades just between orientation and graduation, we will the ability to retain the knowledge that they have gained. To the Juniors, we will the ability to recall what they have been taught and to retain the knowledge throughout the coming year. A challenging group of students is willed to Mr. Turner. Joyce Scott, Catherine Curtis, and Beatrice Jones, leave their dramatic ability to Hermine Bacote and William Newby. Pauline Reavis and Cleo Joyner leave four years of model conduct to Susanne Bates. Aaron Boone leaves his ability to chew gum in physics to any prospective physics student. Myra Holloway and Marian Perry leave their fondness for the opposite sex to anyone who wants a good time. Shirley Scott and Gladys Pegram will their attentive attitudes in class to Theresa Jones and Lottie Moore. . Loretta Palmer, William Scott, Phillip Smith, and Melissa Wiggins leave their ability to ask questions to some shy lower classmen. 3 Тће ability to qualify as a member of the Diversified Occupation Club is left by William Kindred, Theodore Savage, Leon Ту ев, George Jones, Betty Hopson, Louise Parker, and Zenobia Davis. 'To Norman Williams, Doris Joyner, and Carol Calloway, Shirley Armfield, Barbara Lane, and Charlotte Conde will their seats in second-year French class and this message, Apprenez parler francais bien. Kay Mangana has decided to leave her ability to charm young men to Gloria Bates. : After some thought, Yvonne Jeffries, Mattie Hill and Justine Brown de- cided to leave their slenderness to Pearl Harris. ‚ To some lucky girls are left the majorette suits of Ann Sneed and Jose- phine Christian. Step high girls and wear them as long as we did. Jacquelyn Hyman has decided to take her lovely soprano voice with her, but she does leave her solo parts in the choir to some deserving soprano. А Ernestine Walston, Marvis Atkins and William Conde leave their seats і physics class to Carlton Rainey. We hope you са conquer physics. Marion Welch, Harriette Tucker and Verdelle Guinyard leave to Marian Poe, Delores Ingram and Lynn Allen, the ability to enjoy basketball games and other school activities without promenading all over the place. 50 To Henry Mangrum, Breon Haskett and Henry Britt, Lee Mangrum leaves his clean absentee slate and alarm clock. School starts at 8:45 Monday morning and is in session every morning until Friday, Boys. Jean Everette and Sarah Haskett will to Maurice Jones, their ability to play basketball. Barbara Bowes and Jean Blevins leave their memories of the school days to Dorothy Byrd, and hope that she can get along one year without them. Gladys Winfield, Annie Ridley, Annie Pringle and Mary Clark bequeath their seats in Mr. Turner's room to Joyce Ridley and Joseph Winfield sincerely hoping that they will find them more comfortable than they did. Nola Wimberly leaves to her sister, Shirley, her high scholastic grades. Better stop dreaming about Andrew, sis, and concentrate on your books. Sylvester Rainey, James Palmer, and Thomas Simpson leave their ability to run track to Richard Gillis and Lorenzo McNeal. Keep trying, boys, and you won't finish last. To Walter Williams, James Haynes, Jack Avent, and George Ruff leave their brilliant football plays. Stop trying to jive the coaches and the chicks. Listen to the coaches and develop some skill. The ability to play a real E-flat is left to John Neal and Joseph Ross by Ernest Anderson. Elizabeth Jacobs, Robert Bell, and Clarence Johnson bequeath their kind- ness and courtesy to the upperclassmen. Clarence Whittaker, Ernest Anderson, Charles King, Walter Stephenson, and David Garrette leave their places in the band to anyone their suits will fit. George Davis, James West, James Simmons, and Herbert Strickland will their basketball skills to Caesar Williams, and Clinso Copeland so that next year's team will equal this о е. To Karen and Janet Leach are willed the ladylike ways of Shirley Phillips, Rosie Crayton, and Lillian Poe. Slow down, girls. Leonard Tucker leaves his half of the piano stool to Gordon Starks. I really enjoyed working with you, Gordon. Carter Bradshaw leaves only memories to Sandra Downing and Maxine Lawrence. Yvonne Carter and Clara Anderson leave their friendly smiles to all pessimists. Willie Branch, John Johnson, John Carter, William Keller, and William Holloman leave their books to anyone who wants them. They never found much use for them. Betsy Murphy, Frances Wylie, and Earl Briggs think that their sisters and brothers are big enough to take care of themselves, so they won't appoint anyone for that task. Linwood Moore, Mary Randall, Thomas Shields, Bernard Chambers and Eugene Blair feel that they have nothing to will since they have had such a wonderful time in high school. Beatrice Jones, Grady Burgess, and Alice McMillan leave excess weight to all underweights. Alice Stephens and Helen Cooper leave their lovely dispositions to all those who might find them of some use. Naomi Bell thinks she'll need everything to go to housekeeping on, so we'll excuse her.
