OON THE MEMBERS of your class will be scattered throughout the state, nation, and even the world, but the memories of your school life with its fun, its struggles, and its final accomplishments will remain with you long after the last farewells are completed. The faculty of your school wishes you much happiness and success wherever life may lead you-in office, factory, college, and, finally, in your own homes. 70e 'Defiant The blue and gray colors of dear Collinwood High, The stately tower rising to a cloudless sky. Our memories engraved deep upon our hearts; They will be dear to us, till each of us departs To other fields. These dear emblems will remind us Of all the fun we had, which now is all behind us; Of the dreams we dreamed, and the friends we made. Now, as we join the never-ending cavalcade Of youth, we shall remember the lessons taught us. And smile gayly as we recall the joys brought us— The 9A farewell dance; entering senior high; The picnics at Metro 'neath the blue and cloudless sky; NHS inductions; and'12B elections. We find now that we made the right selections In our officers, our leaders, and our dear friends, Who have stayed with us and guided us to such high ends. We have other memories, also very dear. Senior plays and operettas, with their laughs and tears; The Spotlight, noon movies, programs over the P. A., The Prom, Commencement. These and all the rest Are brought to mind as we bid our last goodbye. They prove to us that Collinwood is the best. She's rhe I2A class secretary. 7i iU enteMt en, The January 1947 class turned the spotlight on itself when two 12A girls held the highest executive offices of the Student Council. They were also the first students to hold these positions in the first schoolwide elections conducted under the new Student Council constitution. Judy Dangler organized the new Student Council with the capable assistance of Doris Pike as Vice President. This term marked the first time that girls have ever held both top positions. Instead of the usual prom to wind up social events of the senior class, the January class turned original and entertained at a unique dinner dance in our favorite Night Club placed in the cafeteria. Feature attractions from Class Day entertained us in between courses to make the night club scene complete. Our own school band furnished the music for dancing and several talented musicians in the class performed. We didn't have a class day but at the dinner dance these acts rounded out this gala affair into a beautiful memory. Mike Cannanozzi has kept up the family tradition by being a valuable lineman on both offense and delenso. Miko was the heaviest member of the Railroaders and received honorable mention on the All Senate team I Spurring Collinwood drivo on the fighting eloven wan Center Dick Hudson, who is recognized by all as a rugged ball player. Dick did a bang-up job as an excellent and tough tine-backer and was always in there plugging. His hard plugging earnod him his letter this season. Collinwood will never forget his outstanding work as an athlete. Reaching the height of his career in his senior year Captain Sil Cornachione distinguished himself as an outstanding alhleto when he took scoring honors in the All Senate League by running up a total of 79 points. Sil has been a first stringer for 2 seasons and has marked up a brilliant record for himself and for Collin-wood. Climaxing his success in high school. Sil took honors as the first Football King” in the school's history Wo can well say that Collinwood will miss Sil. Returning to Collinwood after playing first string in 1944. Nick DiCicco received his position back on the fighting eloven as right half to tally up an excellent record. Nick, boing very last and an elusive runner, earnod a position on the All Senate team. Coming back to Collinwood after receiving his discharge from the Marines. Wade Fennoll played his second semester on the varsity team Having an excellent record before entering the service his luck changed when ho received a broken heel at midsemester Wade received a letter for his fine work as fullback. Nick DiCicco started on the wrestling team two years before he entered the service. He won recognition for the Blue and Gray In the 134 pound class He received two tellers in wrestling, and one in track in addition !o the two he earned in football. Playing for 2 yoars on the varsity baseball team, and earning letters for both seasons. Frank Kovacic has distinguished himself as a brilliant baseball player. Being an outstanding left fielder. Whitey also received recognition in his junior year, having a batting average of 400. Blaise Ferrato played first string basketball for two seasons. His hard playing, coolness of mind, and dosire to win has won him the praise of everyone. Whorevor there is a tough game, you're sure to find Pits in thore fighting. Frank Kovacic. receiving a letter on the baskotball team in his junior year, is woll on his way to earning another this season. Seeing considerable action as a forward, you can be sure that Whitey” will be in there playing . a Tine game of basketball. Lou Ruscilto. in his sophomore year, received a letter for his brilliant work on the lightweight relay team and also as a 220-yard man. Turning to golf as a senior. Lou also found his ability again by winning a letter on the golf team. Richard Melocik received a letter in his tumor year on the light-weight relay team. Dick continued his tine track work into his senior year and has been very helpful in keeping Collinwood's record high in scholastic standing. I Joan Griffith, all around outstanding alhlele. served as president of the girl gym leaders in the 12A. Phyllis Bergner and Shirley Taggart entered the club in the 9A. The 12A boy gym leaders, under the direction of Mr. Paul Fiening. were recognized as leaders for the first lime this year. Picked by ability and scholastic standing, each boy was assigned to a squad which he had complete charge of during tests, apparatus. work, and exercises. Mike Gattozzi's slogan, Don has proved to be a Frank Brunkus—Was aided in his campaign for office by Dick I atessa's arrangement with Perry Como to sing “One More Vote” (Via phonograph record). Light hair, blue eyes, Frank has taken over capably in Don’s absence. Anna Marie Cirino—Full of pep and vitality, “Andy” stepped into the multitude of tasks of secretary with characteristic efficiency and briskness. Joe McGovern—The boy with financial worries did a fine job of keeping our class out of the “red.” He was campaigned for by Paul Thomas, in the role of an old-time politician. IDE TilRll THE PAGE In the years to come, it will be like opening a book of memories to glance through these pages. They will unite us all in spirit as one class again. We will he able to recall old friendships, familiar class rooms, and helpful teachers. We will remember our lunchroom antics, competitive sports, and extra curricular activities. While we look over pages of past gaiety, serious thoughts about our high school will creep back, too. It doesn’t take anyone of us long to realize, now, that our school life was primarily for learning, and that what we did learn, no matter how remote it seemed at the time, had a necessary bearing on our future living. Today we experience a deep feeling of regret at the closing of our high school days at Collinwood. With this regret is our sincere appreciation for the opportunities Collinwood has extended us. It was like closing a book of memories when we walked through the halls and to classes for the very last time. Then we knew that this building with its familiar sights was really saying, “I’ve written my chapter in your book of life. English Class UJE LOOK BACK... There is so much to remember from these six years at Collinwood. It hardly seems possible that it was four years ago when we were only eighth graders and Mike Cattozzi had a big write up about giving ISO pounds of tin cans to the current drive; Tony Cammiere received his first plaque in a physical fitness program; Paul Brown was only four feet four inches tall and had to have Mr. Steigerwald give him a box to stand on in print shop; Nadine Reed had to sing a solo in Miss Quilly’s English class because she used the word “guy’ ; Shirley Parker had a lead in the junior play, “Indian Captive.” And then when we were almost seniors, in the ninth grade, Dick Cross was absent for five weeks because of scarlet fever; Pete Tancredi wanted a badge for Christmas so he could be a real junior commando; everyone belonged to the Victory Corps; homerooms were having contests in War Bond sales; Carol Balich wrote a story about her “Victory family ; when “Mairiy Doats was the song rage; Marge Bowles and Elaine Retallick were president and secretary of the Junior Student Council; when Alex Sanderson was bring kind to greenies and Wally Maher played Oliver Twist on the radio; Bing Stearns and Joe Torok starred in “One Mad Night ; and Shirley Carrell was sporting a beautiful tan after spending six weeks in Florida; Frank Sinatra created a near-riot when he appeared at the Palace theater; when all the language classes held a joint picnic at Euclid Beach; Sully Talbot just arrived from Cincinnati and Collinwood received a Treasury Department citation for buying u $500,000 ambulance plane; and how shocked we all were when President Roosevelt died. When we were finully out of junior high school English classes were reading Silas Marner; we got a half-holiday so ration books could be issued; when all the kids were singing “Don’t Fence Me In and Home in Indiana was a box office hit; Jane Yannanluono worked in the Lost and Found and was confronting everyone with a foot-long dagger. When we came back to school the next September and found a new principal. Mr. Simmons in charge. We were sorry to see Mr. Rowe leave. There were many things to occupy our minds; On The Air” was the operetta; Cunnar Johnson and his crowd were raving about their vacation in Canada with Mr. Fiening; Fred (.ocnikcr. on the same excursion, got off the train at the wrong station and still answers to the name Steve Zcrppia Zapp Hi Y. Homeroom .. .THROUGH SIX YEARS “North Bay”; the band was playing popular songs at football games; “Atchison, Topeka, and the Santa re was popular; Miss Kimber had that famous third period English class; Ernie Kupfer, Luther Lynn, and Wallace Russell were still in our class; Ladies' I)av was held with only girls, or boys dressed up to look like them, allowed in the gym; a music convention was held in Cleveland with visitors from all over the world; over three hundred Collinwoodites participated; school threatened to close because of flu epidemic that resulted in over 3,000 absences in one week; on the first school-wide election pupils voted for Student Council officers; “Junior Miss” was the senior play; and Mr. Eddy had two solid geometry classes—one with three girls, the other with two; “A Tale of Two Cities” was an English requirement. As 12B’s we came to school to find that Miss Dietz had resigned; we had our class elections with l ena the Hyena a famous campaign poster for Frank Brunkus; Stewart Kline and Connie Dapkunas were chosen basketball host and hostess; “Tire Mikado,” operetta, was a huge success; Mr. Zahour left the school and Mr. Hudson took his place; Collinwood was chosen to present a city-wide Brotherhood program and the Spotlight got its first All-American rating; Paul Thomas acted as campaign manager in both Class and Student Council elections and the club program was initialed in school; Kilroy made his appearance; our first football king was crowned; the Heights-Collinwood football game was designated as “Band Night” and the musicians wore railroad uniforms; they rode onto the field in a real locomotive. And, then, finally the I2A! What a greeting we received when we took the Ohio Stale Psychological Test: how it was on the same day as our first 12A dance; and when the second Indies' Day was held and the boys had a beauty contest; when commercial students went to John Hay High School to take day-long tests and how Collinwood made the best attendance record of its history; how everyone was singing the Anniversary Song” and Al Jolson once more came into his own; the Spotlight was awarded All American” and Medalist”; Collinwood was chosen as one of the schools to be in the Inter-group Education plan; student bankers started a shoe-shining business for themselves and “The Merchant of Yonkers” played on two nights; swimming was a choice for 12A girls instead of regular gym, and Open the Door, Richard was born—and soon after died; K I Cym Leaders got pins for the first time; we struggled through the Power Test on the morning of Class y and-but that’a all.
