COLLINWOOD HfflF) BCHOOL UBRAR 15210 ST. CLAIR AVE, CLEVELAND 10. OHIO Zo the Class of January 1943 This Commencemeni means for mosi of you lhe acceplance of new responsibilities, both personal and civic. For most of you, it marks the end of formal education. For most of you the period of completing your education without the guidance of teachers is about to begin. The volume of success you secure in this new phase of life upon which you are now entering depends primarily upon the amount of interest you generate in it, and, secondarily, to the extent to which you apply the techniques of home study and menial alertness Collinwood has tried to teach you during your high school days. Your success will be our security in years to come. For selfish as well as professional reasons, we wish you well. And then there was Bernice Reschko who did a wonderful job of I Found a Million Dollar Baby. A million thanks should be given to Dick Hagomoistor who really did a grand job at tho piano ... To Ann Marripodi who brought a bit of Hawaii on tho stage with her gracious Hula Dance ... To Archie Frame lor his witty sayings and his crazy poem (remember?) ... To John Olsen ar.d Sheldon Zoslov for their sporting ribs_And of course there wero othors ... all real sports ... all fine kids . . . The dance was successful too—The gals were all purty In their new dressos and although some of our heroes held up the left wall of the girl's gym very well—we all had a grand lime. There were many other laughs and a lot of swell kids who worked hard to put the thing over. The idea of the whole show was to bring into the limelight all the things of historical. entertaining, and musical importance that happened during our reign on this earth (ahem) . . . Which about covered the years 1924 lo 1942 . . . Catch on? Although it wasn't as elaborate and oxciting as the Prom, and although it was a bit on the corny side. Class Day as presented by the kids won't be forgotten for a long whilo yet. It produced many a laugh and. yes. even an occasional bronx cheer was heard In the audience. For instance remember the swell Master of Ceremonies Blair Schroyor made and how the class howled when he announced the title of our presentation as Only Yestorday or Who Loft The Ring Around the Bath Tub? . . . The kids got quite a kick out of that and their onjoyment was addod to when fellows liko Bernard MacGroarty. Jerry Jankovich and Jack Caputo wont out on that stago and practically ad-libbed the wholo thing ... but it sure brought results. . . . And Shore won't be a poison who won't agree that the biggest hit of Iho show was Howard Connor's uproarious impersonation of fiery Carmen Miranda. What an outfit ho had on—remember? Ho was perfoct—from tho wigglo of his hips lo that wickod gleam in his oyos . . . Incidentally our singing quartet composed of Ernest Scott. Ken McManemy. Ray Monday, and Budd Bernhardt certainly put the Ink Spots to shame. CLAIR AVE. CLEVELAND 10. OHIO JUNE 1-94 3 A.LM . M TER Oh Collin wood, thy praises now we sing; Dear Col inwood, to thee our gifts we bring. U e hail thy colors, both the blue and gray, Thy spirit leads us on our upward way; And as we come to take our leave of thee, We pledge our love, our faith, and loyalty. Oh Collin wood, thy sons and daughters free. Co forth to love and serve humanity; The lessons thou hast taught in hall and field Shall be to us a bulwark and a shield; And if the years shall bear us far from thee, We'll hold thy name in hallowed memory. M uc by SIBELIUS b A H n mi urn m mm ma HE OUTSTANDING CHARACTERISTIC of the class of 1943 which distinguishes it from its immediate predecessors is its marked spirit of gay camaraderie. This spirit has been noticeable in all the group activities of the class. Hopes for the continuation of this spirit of controlled gaiety and good comradeship into the serious lives of the individual members of the class are cherished by the entire faculty of Collinwood High School, dL Those individuals travel farthest along life’s road who do so with serious intent but, at the same time, with hearts filled with laughter. (H. It is my wish that your days in Collinwood have helped you acquire in addition that poise, courage, and fine sense of discrimination necessary for success in your future undertakings. HE GAY FORTIES! This is the theme of the June 1943 class booklet which is being published in the midst of one of the most serious times that the world has ever known. Then why, you ask, do we think of gayety? It is because we believe that without losing sight of the grave problems of our day, we, as a representation of the youth of the world, must keep burning within us the adventurous, gay spirit which through countless ages has been an impelling force behind progress. We must keep alive the fire, the daring, the optimism, and as well as the levelheadedness which is necessary to build a new world. Now you are questioning whether indeed it has been the youth who have made the most outstanding contributions to progress. We think it has. As people grow older they become more set in their ways, more careful, and less willing either to invent or to accept changes. It is the youth who, in their enthusiasm, dare to do things, who at every step of the way give humanity its forward shove. In spite of the struggle in which the world is engulfed today, we are gay, we dare and we do, many times wit lout sufficient caution or oversight. But we will come through and we will help to build a better world than has ever before been known. We live in the forties, which by our spirit we have made gay and which we will continue to make gay. It is for the future, the gay fifties and sixties and seventies, that we will strive. Our hope is that for us they may be as happy and worthwhile as have been our days at Collinwood High School. fl'EiiS OF TIE EiMfLf PATRICIA BACNALL Secretary MARTIN BENTE. Prrudent BIEL CONNELL. Our graduating class is well represented in these three branches of the armed forces. Boys have left a boy’s life to enter the service in answer to America’s call, and serve with our allies. Listed below are the names of those boys whose pictures we were unable to get for the book. The list may not be complete but no names have been left out intentionally: JACK WATSON MATTHEW PURPURA DOUGLAS MacLEAN GERALD GENCOPE BOB METELKO DONALD LEE MORGAN PAT MANCINI LARRY HOGAN RICHARD KUHR 5 TIME Sjf Svk I ROM LILLIAN RUSSELL to melodramas—that was the Gay 90’s, jffl But for us, from “greenies” to “grads” are the Gay 40’s. Way back W then we certainly made a grand entrance-so we thought. At least as greenies we were unique. Jim Potocnick achieved early fame by writing a notebook titled, “How to Win Favor and Influence Grades.” (System work, Jim?)......Then the fact was smelled out that Bob Carifo accompanied his father on skunk hunting trips. He was even the proud possessor of a skunk pelt.... Remember when — Evelyn Jahn and Carolyn Merhar were campfire girls — (pretty hot, huh).....Gilbert Tutina received a Junior High Honor Pin (times have certainly changed)....There was a girls basketball team called The Bullets” (somebody must have shot them, though)........The Junior Play “Galahad Jones , with Connie Flynn, Claudine Wood, and Jackie Luderus. We wonder how the present 12A is who wrote this long ago on a study hall desk, “Nobody loves me; I'm going into the garden and eat worms. Yesterday I ate two wooly ones and one smooth one.” Time goes by, still here. Then, as lime went on, Jennie Herrick became girls marble champ...Hazel “Sunny” Allen came from the country......Mary Ann Wilson was conspicuous wearing her brother’s green tweed jacket......Ralph Rossman carved the initials, “E. W.”, on everything and was true to her by never looking at other girls (how he has changed)........Virginia Lang won the American Legion award......The 9A ended with a flourish at the 9A Farewell Party. Remember when Pat Erickson. Eleanor Meglich, and Jennie Herrick were initiated into the Gym Leaders Club. How many arc Gym Leaders now, hummmmmmmmm...............Connie Flynn’s story of her vacation in Missouri were she was horseback riding and navigated about 20 miles off course... then a few girls were scribblers, too....Lillian Henickman, Alice Kosmerl, and Phyllis (da boss) Boyd won prizes in the Tower writing contest. Ah yes, the Tower......Carl and Carol Schneider serenaded the Eaton Axle Employees at the annual Christmas party.....and it’s a good thing that Gordon Renwick and Ernie Rinaldi arc graduating.........maybe they’re getting tired of totin’ all the scrap metal on their chests. Believe it, or else — Kay Mulligan once played the clarinet.in September Joyce Haessler took all the honors for having the smoothest tan.and then “Chops” Colabuno once terrorized the other Senate football teams with his big brown eyes.....Dot Koss and Carolyn Pibrovec won Gregg shorthand speed certificates (fast girls, huh?)...musical Lois Miller went from asst, drum majorette to president of the girls band.then, too, we remember the boner Gordon Renwick pulled in his civics class. He called the Panama Canal an “alimentary canal.”.....Tch! Tch!........Senor Vince Francioli challenging all comers with an imaginary sword (gym class horseplay.) CUES B¥ Then, too, we had “Berkeley Square”, the headache of headaches, to get costumes for......it was worth it though. Remember, too, when you donated a dime for the United Nations flags, and their beautiful display between halves at the football games. Rosemary Martin spending her summer in a downtown toy department.......... Isobel Brunton eating her sherbet with a fork..Franklyn Schultz selling his zoot suits so he could buy a new convertible......Chuck Schmid being shadowed by his little brother while walking Dot Kenig to classes..Helen Morris sporting a brand new grass skirt.....Hall guard Bill Connell and his black eye!....Dot Crowley warming the bench at the Adams game......... Paul Sheridan’s locker being broken into....Betty Davies, Carolyn Merhar tooting off the draftees..Drum Majors Dorothy Scudicri and Jack Braun in their snappy new uniforms....Violet Marinero in first period gym....the Pagnard twins corresponding with Mr. Kay....Andy Post making goo-goo eyes at the girls in his modem problems class.........Bob Schlappal tallies twenty-one points in Shaw basketball game......Theresa Picciano begging Santa for big handsome Marine.......Gruesome twosome — Mary Cigoj and Fddie Intihar.....Arlene Foster campaigning for Doug MacDonald in the 12A elections.....I Ida Tavoletti promising to get to bed earlier..Larry Hogan leaving for the Marines.......Phyllis Koch sporting a new sparkler, same as lots of other engaged girls.....Del Leuszler and Barbara Downer still cousins after twelve long, long years of school.Pat Bagnall handing out photo appointments.......Larry Bclcastro, Mary DiCera, Viola DiSantis, Louise Mancini, Vince Francioli starring in the Italian play.......Thelma Vaughn getting a weekly gardenia from her honey in the service.....Joann Dossett and Jane Brown switching clothes........Frances Costa balancing Spotlight homeroom accounts.....Dorothy Masec coming here from Marshall and Elaine Boyd from South......Eleanor Zrimsek coming to school for an education, of all things—strange—nobody else does.....Millie Kramar tops in first period girls commando gym......Ray Phillips and his swell radio script given in assembly.....Doug MacLean leaving for the R.C.A.F......... Big deal—Art Wahrenbergcr’s date paying for his ticket to the senior play. Karl Naugle existing in suspended animation due to his love affair.James Drennan and his he-man voice....Bryant Everest striking an oratorical pose— as usual.....Bob Delamater getting his dates mixed at the first 12A meeting (school dates, not female ones).....Pat Erickson always squirming from behind a stack of sheet music to smile at Mr. Lake....Phyllis Boyd and her weekly tantrums over the Spotlight..Frances Simonivich cutting her own hair.....Conchetta Ciliberto and her Gildersleevc laugh..Frances Brate, a victory gardener from way back........Reggie Resnick and his piano playing...... Put them all together and more, they spell the twelfth grade to which we now say farewell ! ! ! MSB fi Moonlight mood, hoys and girls dancing. Gay little notes, leaping and prancing, Filmy white, and billowing yellow, Starry young ladies and every fellow Pleased and amazed when he looked at the girls In luscious colors and all their curls. To strains of sweet, hep music playing, A garden of rainbows, the skirts were swaying, Soft spring blue, pink, and green. Flashing red, and black were seen; Slender feet in silver slippers Flying fast like winged clippers. Fellow in luxes and white dinner jackets Looked a lot different than they do in classes. Buttonholes sporting red and white carnations. Long draped zoot suits causing sensations. Accidents happen at every dance— Perhaps it was just the air of romance, But the inevitable happened; gowns, first-lime worn. Ended the evening with hems slightly torn. The posters standing at the back of the room Certainly guaranteed death to all gloom. A big fat policeman looking terribly lough Warning all comers not to gel rough; A giant quartette, perhaps singing “Home Sweet Home, In large white aprons and their mugs dripping foam. The smooth star-dusting of Dick Lezius and band, Inspired dancing of every brand. Everything was included from conga to waltz And none of those beaming smiles were false When fellows and girls down the center by four In a grand march formed a line at the door. Where lights on cookies and shining punch played The setting of the gay, gay nineties stayed As everyone broke into broadening grins When handed those horse and buggy pins. The spirit was wonderful, never a fall In the fun that was had by the sponsors and all. The second of three days every 12A finds dear To his heart in all his senior year. Class Day, came and went off with a bang As the Flora Doras danced and the Crease Spots sang. Judgment Day left us rolling in glee As the teachers were given the third degree. Now ue look forward to the day of days Which will bring an end to our high-school ways. When we shall hear from one who is great Of the world of tomorrow that must be made. What better song of the new day could we bring Than the theme that China and we must sing? We hope that we find as much triumph and fun As we have in our school, when our lives are done. FTER one has participated as an active member of any athletic team, he cannot help retaining qualities which will stand him in good stead wherever he goes and whatever he does. The fellowship built up by the atmosphere of the locker room, the showers, and the odor of freely perspiring bodies giving their utmost for the love of the game will never be lost. Smoothly functioning muscles with sleekness unsurpassed are exhibited by the track team in all its various phases; the fast charging defense of the football team as well as its greased lightning offense; the synchronization of a basketball team as it breaks down the floor, these are all signs which any athlete recognizes as the result of long, tedious, and tiring hours. Each moment, never to be regretted but actually envied, as former “greats” make room for new boys with the same determination to excell. Our graduating athletes will, more than ever before, find these experiences most helpful in solving the problems which will arise and puzzle the indomitable spirit of all American boys as they proudly trade civvies for the uniforms so common among us today. Participation in sports will help us become better citizens as we realize, through teamwork, that the job cannot be completed by expending a unit’s endeavors in several directions, that only by close cooperation can a government, a team, or an army bring about the desired results. Better citizens of the world is the aim of every peace loving citizen and the opportunity given Americans will render this dream a truth if and when the ideals and practices of democracy are made available to man universally. Compulsion never made a man entirely willing to do a deed. As long as the spirit of liberty lives, tyranny will never reign permanently. Teamwork is an essential of any undertaking, and the world is realizing this more and more by the activities of “undergrounds.” This essential of freedom is gradually being learned by our enemies. Americans know that the fundamentals of teamwork arc their greatest time saver in the training of our country’s defenders. We know our students will be better equipped to oppose oppression and demand justice as a result of athletics and the type of education we have had made available for us. The spirit and will to win which has been developed in our classrooms, gymnasiums, and athletic fields, present the world with a fine example which we hope will be followed by all nations. ED COLABUNO______________________________ Coaches Vaccariello and Miller consider “Chops ’ “One of the mainstays of the Collinwood line and also “one of the fastest guards in the city.” ANDY “Vac’s” praises are almost boundless for “All Scholastic.” “Probably the best lineman on the team. He was an exceptionally hard man to move; very few gains were made around Andy.” BOB KIBLER ____________________________ The strength of the second team gives one an excellent picture of the first string. “Although he didn't see much action he was a very valuable substitute. say the coaches. CORNELL AMNASEN__________________________ About Vitamin Pills” Amnesen, Coach Vac” says, “He was one of the cleverest wrestlers on the team and was particularly quick at absorbing the tricks of wrestling.” KENNETH KAMINSKI ________________________ Vac” says: “He loved the sport immensely and was one of the hardest workers on the team. He improved greatly as the season progressed.” The opinion of the Coach seems to agree with ours as Ken was one of the best students in our class right from the start. BOB KIBLER ------------------------------------ He always had to spot his opponents between ten and fifteen pounds; ne finished with a fair record considering his handicap. His work was always excellent and his sincerity during practice was surpassed by none of his team-mates.” Fine praise from your coach. Bob! ft c s JIM TAYI.OR _________________________________ Our class can be well proud of “the best half-miler Coll in wood has ever had and one of the outstanding hoys in the state, as Coach Siiuukka so ably puls it. “Studious was unable to participate until his senior year and Coach Simukka regrets that he was unable to run his first two years. The Coach claims he would have been much faster and would have helped the relay teams greatly. ANDY POST________________________________ Andy’s ability is not confined to the gridiron as is evidenced by his two track letters. His natural ability is the biggest reason for his success, says the coach. AL VAIKSNER ------------------------------- CHAS. SCHMID --------------------------------- The girls with Al would like to spoon; The boys have time to burn. But he doesn't date, the big baboon. But Chas just likes to “learn” ( ?•) BOB SCHLAPPEL_____________________________— Coach Newman expresses his opinions of these three Schap is a shrimp, but unlike Al, graduating basketeers as young men who “produced Hr likes bis dales a little loo wrll. for their school and who have been excellent leaders. AI. VAIKSNF.R----------------------------- Al’s hitting as well as the classy work he turned in around the keystone were a boon to Coach Shafer. BOB PUDLOCH——---------------------------- Valuable as a utility infielder,” is what Mr. Shafer has to say about Bob. ROY JOHNSON______________________________ The coach thinks Roy’s assortment of pitches made him one of the mainstays of the staff.'' FRANK MAH ___________________________________ Frank held down second base on the varsity nine for two years. The coach claims that he is one of the better players on the team.” BOB CABLE_____________________________. Bob’s loyalty to the school is expressed very well in his contribution to the baseball team, comments the coach. -o'N - A- . -A vv - S' v ' SOLI J f t CJ I INTENT!
