Text from Pages 1 - 126 of the 1942 volume:

Our Point of View A madman in Europe has unloosed the hatred and desperation of millions of downtrodden people. He leads them on with false dreams and false hopes causing them to trample down the dreams and hopes of other little people and at last this great fire has threatened to engulf even our beloved America. But our people have risen as they always will rise when their freedom is threatened. Some of our classmates have gone into the service of our country already and many, many more will go before the war is over. We of the Class of January 1942 are going forth into a world strangely different from that in which any preceding graduating class has found itself. The setup of the whole world has changed and so have our small individual worlds. Those of us who remain at home must make sacrifices and do our part that these boys may have something to fight with. Many of us will give up things long dreamed of, car, college, new clothes, but I am sure that when we look at the condition of those who have bowed to the conqueror we will see how many thousand times better off we are than they are over there. To those who are watching us from the outside World and those whom we leave behind in Collinwood v e give this message We may make mistakes at first but we will keep doing our best. When the final score is taken I believe we will have done our part. What more can anyone say or do? PAUL DUNHAM, EDITOR kuimmuimuuuiiiuuHiumillllluniiJ To the Class of January 1942 Just what does America mean to you? Does it mean enough so that you are willing to make the sacrifices for it which without question you are now facing? If it does, then Collinwood will not have failed of its purpose. History will record your answers which are now obscure. May you willingly, happily, and earnestly accept the challenge the future holds, and discharge your responsibilities better than have we who call ourselves your teachers. Amnasan. The 12A term is done, We'll miss dear Collinwood forever a day, Our school, with colors blue and gray. Think of us in the years to come; School mates we'll remember, loyal everyone Saving the farewell until the last day. It's so hard for us to break away Oh! we'll remember the way we used to linger in the halls; Teachers didn't like that at all. And we'll remember the envy as we watched the others go. And now our time is here, we can't hold back the tear So, show us now your happy smiling face. No school could ever take our Alma-Mater's place. Ours is the class which is loyal and true The class of January forty-two. j V ORDS 3Y VIOLET TIRABASSI We are indebted to the above people for their aid in their capacities as grade advisers: (left to right) Miss Alice Nigh, Miss Edith Erickson, Mr. Ralph J. We hail thy colors, both the blue and gray, Thy spirit leads us on our upward way; And as we come to take our leave of thee, We pledge our love, our faith, and loyalty. Oh Collinwood, thy sons and daughters free, Go forth to love and serve humanity; The lessons thou hast taught in hall and field Shall be to us a bulwark and a shield; And if the years shall bear us far from thee, We'll hold thy name in hallowed memory. Music by Sibelius Words by A. H. Ford 4 i Tu flic Class uf June 1942 3 wy a 4 The present generation, on the basis of record, has no right to offer advice to the oncoming one. Certain it is that the lessons of World War One were not sufficiently well learned to become effective in preventing World War Two. The passing generation then hopes the oncoming generation, of which you are members, will learn from their mistakes and so direct the affairs of our nation as to procure for yourselves and for posterity a world-wide, stable form of government. With the passing on of this problem to you, we wish you every good thing in life to which your enterprise and effort entitles you. Principal MiMiifirics We'll Cherish We are leaving a senior high school that has given us in three brief years enough memories to last a lifetime. When we talk over the old days we will chuckle when we remember the homework that so often went undone, the comic books that helped us endure our detention periods, the worried wait for the homeroom teacher to pick up our cut slip, chemistry experiments that went amiss, long nights of cramming for tests the next day, crowded busses and streetcars, sloppy-joe sweaters and station-wagon coats, saddle-shoes and knit ties, boogie-woogie in the Social Room, cokes at the drugstore after school, muffled whispers and flashing beams of light in noon movies, the trophy cases and statues in the front hall, gym showers and lost tennis shoes, pink passes and hall guards, Student Council dances, and all of the countless little things that have made school so pleasant. We will feel sad when we remember the tower, quiet and dark against the sky, the color and charm of the cafeteria on Prom Night, the songs and good fellowship after a hard fought football or basketball game, and the lump in our throats when we heard our Alma Mater float across the hushed auditorium. Then we will long to sit again on the fence in the spring sunshine, to be pushed and pulled about by the jostling crowd, once more to be a part of the roaring mass of humanity packed into the Stadium to cheer our football team to a Senate co-championship, and yes—we will still want to sneak quietly back into school with a paper bag containing hamburgers with onions and a bottle of Pepsi-Cola clutched in our hand. We are graduating into a chaotic world that is torn and rent with war. We shall all be seeking one thing—Happiness. We shall be successful if we find as much happiness as we have known inside the walls of Collinwood High School. Editor Our Friend and Commencement Speaker Mr. Frank P. Whitney Mention of the June '42 Commencement will bring back thoughts of Mr. Frank P. Whitney for at the request of the class he is making our Commencement address. We are all proud that we shall have a man so well-known in educational enterprises to speak at our Commencement. In addition we would like to say that it gives us great pleasure to see Mr. Whitney back in the educational field once more for we have all profited by his long experience and vast knowledge. As principal of this building for seventeen years he elevated Col-linwood from a mediocre local high school to an educational institution of national prominence. -1 We present the officers of our class v ho have successfully directed our senior activities. Thomas O'Connell Stanley Tomsich John Trebich - ftr NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY TUTORING CHAIRMEN CHAIRMEN OF STUDENT CONTROLLED STUDY HALLS Hov proud we were when we or our friends were among those chosen for the National Honor Society. It seemed that they had reached the pinnacle of success in school. The beauty and charm of the induction will never leave our hearts. The Tutoring Room was always abuzz with voices of the learning and the learned. Here cooperative teaching was practiced and learning enlivened. Leadership and character of the tutors and those being tutored helped to make this room a citadel of learning. The student guards in the Honor Study Halls tried to provide a quiet and peaceful place for us to study —no gum chewing or gossiping allowed. No teacher was needed to keep the rooms quiet because all students were on their honor. Through the Student Council we all had an active voice in our school government and also planned many of those after school jam sessions. The full meaning of democracy we learned by practical application. COLUNWOOO HIGH SCHOOL USRAKf STUDENT COUNCIL i y MADRIGAL CHOIR The musically inclined among us found an outlet for their talent in the boys and girls bands. The clamor of the band room was sometimes deafening as members of the bands started their musical exercises on the different instruments—the rhythm of the drums blending with the whine of the clarinet, the sharp clang of the symbols struggling with the mei low sound of the French horn, the bcom of the tuba overshadowing the trill of the piccolo. It started at seven a.m. and lasted until five p.m. Their marching at the football games helped to cheer us all when we were losing and their music helped to warm us when v e were shivering from cold. Who can deny the stiffening of backs and thankfulness in our hearts when they played the Star Spangled Banner? The boys and girls in the Madrigal Choir have the most beauti ful voices in the school—low and high, strong and gentle. The leads in the operettas were chosen from this group. Remember The Second Hurricane and The Emperor's Clothes ? They practiced until six p.m. every day for three weeks for each of these operettas. The Spring Concert, in which both the orchestra and vocal units participated, was perfect and we shall never forget the purity and splendor in their voices as they sang A Song of Victory! NOON MOVIE ORGANIZATION The thrilling flickers we saw very day were due to the efforts : the noon movie boys or the boys with the flashlights in their :ands — also known as the ping o.ng whizzes and Mr. Gudi's boys. The junior police system, commonly called the school guard • stem. How often we tried to get . y the sentinel at each door to go at and buy a coke and how often were gently called back, w wonderful it was to know the .ard at the door and be able to 'eason with him. GIRL GYM LEADERS The George Deen course offered by the Higbee Company was an interesting project for the girls that took it. It was a course that supplied actual experience in sales as well as the theory work. GEORGE DEEN CLASS Collinwcod's Girls in White were the girls in the Ushers Club. They ushered at all school affairs and looked pretty sharp in their white dresses. They were poised and gracious hostesses. USHERS CLUB of7the school what other was happen-fr. SOCIAL ROOM STAFF PLAY PRODUCTION CLASS COLLINWOOD SPOTLIGHT STAFF WB!W !WS The Boosters Club was the organization which drove our teams to victory. They yelied lustily and loud, showing the teams that the whole school was behind them and cheering. The girls Friendship Club was a club of comradeship and sports. Ping pong, basketball, baseball, and tennis were favorites. The honor of being a Girl Reserve was much sought after. The dances and spaghetti dinners at the Y.W.C.A. were also swell . FRIENDSHIP GIRLS BOOSTERS CLUB The friendly rivalry of the different Hi-Y clubs was fun to watch. In basketball, football, and baseball they fought for top honors. The Hi-Y dances and festivals at the Y.M.C.A. were super . The boys learned good sportsmanship and fair play and how to be leaders as v ell as followers. 12A HI-Y BOYS CAFETERIA GUARDS The cafeteria guards stood ever on v atch. Watching for what? Spongers in the food line, too famished to wait in line, were the victims whom they pounced upon and escorted to the end of the waiting throng. They were pleasant people—the cafeteria guards—weren't we? VISUAL AIDS SERVICE The visual aid boys had charge of the showing of all the educational films that we enjoyed in our classes. They were the projectioners. No one noticed the cokes and hamburgers that sat on the shelves in the visual aids room, for everyone gets hungry once in a while. CONTROL ROOM STAFF The major control board of the P.A. system with all its little gadgets was no thing of mystery to control room boys. Every time we passed the control room we could hear swing music coming out. Could it have been that the boys were listening to music when they should have beer, studying the mechanism of the control beard? t, o ✓ o' -WES 3 COACH URBAN VACCARIELLO Giving evidence from the first game at Sandusky that they were out to capture the championship, the Railroaders rode through the football season in a blaze of glory. Until they met the Lakewood team, the boys were undefeated—in fact, they had held the rest of the teams scoreless. No one car. forget the thrill-packed game the Railroaders had in the Stadium with Lincoln, west side senate champs. A 12-12 deadlock and a gold cup will forever remind all future Collin-wcodites of the successful football championship the Railroaders and the class of June '42 enjoyed. Big and fast they were, that Railroader eleven of 1941. Smashing everything before them, they wore the terror of the East Side. Since Dec. 7, however, the Rifle Club has assumed a new meaning, that of improving its members' marksmanship if they should ever be called upon to defend their country. Fast stepping Collin wood tracksters performed what no other school (especially Lincoln) thought possible when they won the Senate Cross Country Cup from Lincoln High, West, Rhodes, East, Wes: Tech and Cathedral Latin. James Taylor, John Ryan, Tom Flowers, Den Essel and James Davies ran in the meet for Collinwocd. The track trophy is in the trophy case of the main hall to remind all Collin-wood of v hat their track team accomplished on the morning of October 19. L 1942 TRACK TEAM Ready, set, go—down the track come John Ryan, half miler; Arthur Saye and Dick Mertineit, relay runners; Dick Pada-vick, high jumper, and James Davies and Tom Flowers, milers. All these thin-clads are graduating after having brought numerous track honors to their alma mater. The track team of the Railroaders is always in there near the top competition and the track team this season was no exception. The team won the first twilight track meet ever held in the history of high school track. The meet was against Glenville and John Hay. Early in the season they upset John Adams to the tune of 67-47. Oh, here the boys come now—tired, but still smiling that smile of victory. DICK MERTINEIT ARTHUR SAYE
