Hold Your White Plume High In MEDIEVAL FRANCE lived a certain Cyrano de Bergerac. A man of large stature was he. His personality made him a leader among his fellowmen. His forceful manner made others respect him. One prominent impediment, however, deprived Cyrano of the fair Roxane, his ultimate goal, and that was an abnormally large nose. A physical handicap had barred his way to happiness. He did find, however, that satisfaction was granted those who devoted their lives to others. Despite numerous disappointments, Cyrano led an active, useful life. One day he was murdered. With his sword in hand and his back propped against a tree, Cyrano de Bergerac nobly declaimed: Yes, all my laurels you have riven away And all my roses; yet in spite of you, There is one crown I bear away with me. And tonight, when I enter before God, My salute shall sweep all the stars away From the blue threshold! One thing without stain. Unspotted from the world in spite of doom Mine own!—And that is ... . My white plume. No one had succeeded in robbing him of his integrity. His courage and his honor were unstained. And so may we meet life face to face, guided by our class motto, To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield . If when death is nigh we are still holding our white plume high, we shall have succeeded in life.
