All Jason's predecessors had failed in the undertaking Yet the brave youth ordered the making of a large vessel, the Argo, on which there was a speaking figurehead. AEolus, god of winds, ordered that the courageous men who constituted the crew should encounter no dangerous tempests or unfavorable winds. Three years ago our class set out to gain a treasure— Graduation. We have endured the trials of our voyage throughout this time and are about to obtain the thing we prize. In various ways some members of our crew have been lost, but most of us have made a safe journey. We wish to express cur appreciation to the deities of Collinwood for their help and encouragement during our undertaking. During the voyage the Argonauts visited many islands and kingdoms, but each time they went ashore, Jason lost several men Hercules refused to continue on the expedition after the death of a comrade; a few stayed to do a good deed for the blind king of Thrace; and many were wounded by a fleck of brazen birds who dropped sharp plumage upon the crew. The Argonauts' most dangerous experience was the possage between the Symplegades, heavy rocks which were forever clashing together. After surviving this and other perilous adventures, Jason finally landed at Colchis, succeeded in slaying the dragon, and thereby won the golden fleece ) To the Class of January, 1936 Because you adopt the ship Argo, as in some sort your symbol, I take it that you are a bold and venture loving crew. You may dream of a search for treasure beyond the horizon. You have hope, ambition, courage, and good cheer. After the launching, you may gain the skill and craft that come only in the rough and tumble of the seas. You may find the Golden Fleece on some far coast. You may find it in the useful and familiar here at home. At all events, here's to the voyage and the high adventure and may you all come safe to port. These four received silver Junior High Honor Pins: Ruth Mangold, Michael Pollock, Mary Roznik, and Ann Yera-shunas. Mary Roznik had received the American Legion medal for excellence in service, leadership, and scholarship. Michael Pollock had been given recognition for outstanding service. As we sailed along in the Argo, many of our crew became outstanding in scholarship, leadership, and service Harold Demshar was elected president, Jerry Zinni vice-president, Ruth Kromer secretary, and Mirko Rovtar treasurer. Those who received gold Senior High Honor Pins for four semesters on the honor roll were: Eleanor Bentley, Alice Busher, Ruth Kramer, Anna Licursi, Garnet Maple, Mary Nass, Michael Pollock, Frank Potocnik, Mary Roznik, Nick Ruscitto, and Ann Yeroshunas. Thirty-three of the class have been elected into the Collin-wood chapter of the National Honor Society. They are: Mildred Ackerman, Alex Barr, Eleanor Bentley, Evelyn Brown, Alice Buscher, Mory Cerkvenik, Harold Demshar, Florence Dunbar, Eileen Elliott, Jean Fuhrman, Doris Kershaw, Ruth Kramer, Israel Kraus, Robert Lambrecht, Anna Licursi, Angie Lupo, Eleanore Miklich, Mary Nass, Margaret Noviak, Michael Pollock, Frank Potocnik, Helen Potopsky, Virginia Price, Esther Rome, Mary Roznik, Mirko Rovtar, Nick Ruscitto, Raymond Slater, Margaret Sneller, Elsie Taborsky, Ann Yerashunas, Marjorie Youngberg, and Jerry Zinni. Twenty-Five 15l515151 inlinlInlOnPnOnCTlinDnDnPi|Iij|g] ODESSEY OF THE ARGO In February, 1933 A.D., we the crew of the Argo, set out to seek the Golden Fieece of Achievement in the kingdom of Coll (chis) inwood. We were allowed until January, 1936, to win the crown of Success. Since most of the crew were inexperienced in exploring new fields and in giving knightly service, the early part of the voyage was rather uneventful. The constellation Music guided Alex Barr, trombonist, to N.E.O.T.A. All-District Band Island, where written upon the walls of an old building, we found the name of Mary Roznik included among those of the one hundred ten outstanding Cleveland musicians who composed the all-high orchestra. On Citizenship Summit, the name of Ruth Kramer was engraved as the outstanding citizen of the tenth grade. Continuing our voyage, we saw a high Tower on an adjoining island and we cast our anchor near the shore. Frank Potocnik, Alfred Sylvanus, and Robert Copfer wanted to do a bit of art work on the Tower . Robert Copfer insisted upon our returning to the Musical Isles that he might gain recognition in the operetta Lelawala . Having lingered among those isles even after the rest of the Argonauts had taken to sea for further adventure, Alex Barr was rewarded by being one of the two boys who won top honors in a high school musical contest for a trombone duet. During the next lap of the journey Robert Copfer, Robert Lambrecht, Jerry Zinni, and Arthur Lovett remained behind in order to work on the musical production All At Sea . On an isle o few leagues farther on, you may still find a yellowed parchment. It bears the following inscription: September, 1934. These shall be the officers of the Friendship Club: Florence Dunbar president, Jean Fuhrman vice-president, Mary Roznik secretary, Alice Buscher Collinwood Twenty-Six representative. The officers of the Alpha Hi-Y shall be: Robert Tyler, Lester Englehart, and Robert Flesher. During this part of the Argo's trip Alex Barr took possession of the Islet of Cafeteria Guards and Mary Nass seized that of Library Guards. We sent Mary Roznik back to the mainland to represent the entire eleventh grade in Student Council. The fourth trip was an exciting one. One of its most important features was the election of officers on board the Argo. The crew showed originality in allowing three adven turers to hold each office, dividing the term into three periods. Those rising to the rank of officials were Michael Pollock, Ernest Kalin, and Harold Demshar, presidents; Nick Ruscitto, Jerry Zinm, and Charles Ehinger who later re signed), vice-presidents; Doris Kershaw, Ruth Kramer, and Marjorie Youngberg, secretaries; Robert Flesher, Mirko Rovtar, and Michael Pollock, treasurers. Now a flog of dark blue, light blue, and white was displayed high above the deck of the ship, in order to advertise the crew's selection of representative colors. Since the Argonauts were not a war-loving group, they sent Harold Demshar and Michael Pollock as delegates to an important Peace Committee then in progress. By this time many isles and groups of people were under the control of Argonaut chiefs. Mary Roznik was Student Council secretary and Mary Nass and Alex Barr maintained their positions as commanders of the library guards ond cofeteria guards. It was with a great amount of expectation that we set sail toward Prom Island. As soon as we had reached shore Alice Buscher, Gladys Vik, Mary Roznik, Marjorie Youngberg, and Mirko Rovtar, committee chairmen, hastened to complete preparations for the 12 B party, at which Robert Copfer was master of cere- monies. The 12B-12A Forewell Dance, planned by Robert Tyler's committees and given in honor of the graduating class, was held soon after the prom. Having reached the isle of our destination we must yet endure certain dangers and temptations if we would find the Golden Fleece of achievement, Graduation. We must contend with the fire-breothing bulls (much homework), ond the dragon (Responsibility), but we ore spurred on by the charming sorceress. Ambition. Certain individuals of our crew have achieved a great deal of success since this lap, the most exciting one of all, began. Gladys Vik is editor-in-chief of the parchment known as the Spotlight . Robert Copfer succeeded Alex Barr as cafeteria commander, and Alex was promoted to the position of commander-in-chief of all hall guards. Robert also sang his way to fame as winner of Collinwood Amateur Night. This semester the crew selected Harold Demshar os President of the Argonauts, Jerry Zinni as vice-president, Ruth Kramer as secretary, ond Mirko Rovtar as treasurer. Officers in the heroic group known as National Honor Society were Michael Pollock, Doris Kershaw, and Florence Dunbar. Mary Roznik is vice-president of the Student Council, and Mary Noss is not only secretary of that excellent governing body, but also vice-president of the Cleveland All-High Student Council. Strutting among us in costume similar to military uniform is Ruth Kramer, drum major of the senior girls band and Arthur Lovett, drum major of the senior boys band. Now in January, we expect to gain the Golden Fleece. Yet there will be more gold which each Argonaut, after winning Graduation, will wish to acquire. It will be a combination of Further Achievement, Experiment, and Progress; it will be the Golden Fleece of—of—perhaps Accomplishment, perchance Success. S i i OLYMPIC HEROES The brave and hardy Olympic athletes on board the galley, Argo, man the oars to row our class safely over the seas of life and through the dark storms of trouble. Upon their broad and mighty shoulders rests the heavy burden of carrying our class to the shores of victory. The following men will be playing a prominent part in our voyage through life. CHRISTY BARTH Christy played on the Railroaders' hardwood cage teams for three years, one on the reserve squad and two on the varsity He was considered by Coach Newman as one of his fastest men and one of the most accurate shots on the team. CHARLES EHINGER Chuck has been an outstanding linesman for two years on the varsity grid squad and one year on the reserves. He was considered by many critics as one of the best guards in the city. Coaches Newman, Hudson, and Yost, all say that Chuck is a valuable man to have on the team, not only for his natural ability to play, but also because of his grit and competitive spirit. Coach Hudson says, Chuck has the heart of a lion and is at his best when his team is behind. He also starred on the basketball team for two years and one year on the reserve squad. Chuck ran in the 440 relay and the one mile relay events on the track team and ran in the State meet at Columbus. WILLIAM CHIDLEY In his senior year, Bill blossomed forth as a full fledged stor on the varsity football team, playing a bang-up game at guard. The backfield's success was largely due to his fine blocking and his running interference. Bill played one year on the reserves and a season in the backfield on the varsity before becoming a regular and winning his letter. He was on the track team two years and won a letter in his senior year, placing in many meets in the javelin and the shot-put. Bill was on Collinwood's only wrestling team. Coach Hudson says, It's boys like Bill that make our team a winner. l5lM5M5M5M5151515l51SlS15l5M51S151515l5l5l5l5l5lSl515lSlBlSTSn JOSEPH DALTON Joe developed into one of the brightest track stars Coach Hudson has ever produced. Joe's ability to get away to a fast start on the 880 relay team won him much distinction. He also was a very good dash man, running in the 100 and 220 yard events. Joe was on the varsity track squad for two years and won two letters. He competed in the State meet at Columbus twice in the 880 relay, and won first both times. JOSEPH HVALA Joe caught in all the games on the varsity hardball team last year and was one of the team's hardest hitters, batting .304 and hitting five doubles out of seven hits. Coach Newman called Joe the most promising player on the field. Joe also started in the backfield on the reserve football team in 1934. Coach Yost expected him to star for the varsity this year, but results of an injury received playing on the reserves kept him out of the lineup. JOHN SZARKA Johnnie played varsity football for two years, starring in the Railroaders' backfield in 1933 and 1934, when Collin-wood was co-holder of the Senate championship. Johnnie was a valuable blocking halfback and his ball carrying was above average. Johnnie was also a star on the track team, running in the half mile relay, mile relay, 220 dash, and the low hurdles events. In addition he was on the cross country team far one year. The following served their school on reserve teams or played in minor sports: Frank Cotman, gym team; Jack Divers, reserve track and gym team; Bob English, softball, baseball, and cross country; Eddy Grigonis, reserve football and basketball; Herman Kirshner, reserve football; Mirko Rovtar, reserve football and track; Laddie Sadar, varsity basketball; Ray Slater, reserve football, basketball, and varsity football; Carmen Silvestro, softball baseball. Intramural sports—Bob Disantis, Nick Pietrantone, Earl Swanson, Tony De Mell and Pete Bostick. Thirty ARGO EPICS Throughout its lengthy voyages, the Argo has encountered many obstacles and much strife. These hove been personified in the form of a Treosure Hunt. Ne'er will you find her giddy or capricious. Red of head, green-blue of eye. Class officer—can you tell why? Singulorly he received track recognition Despite plenty of stiff competition. And of course you must surely know How he ranks in the javelin throw! Two girls—one blond, one brunette Who said, We'll edit your booklet yet. A charming lass whom they all call Swede, Who os head of our Spotlight has filled our need. The student leader of the Honor Society Whose merits ore ample in variety. We have become very fond of these items and hope the receivers will be justly appreciative. The only Speoking Oak which we possess is that within our imagination. That prophet informs us that, having a good fundamental education preparatory to our entrance into the great commercial world, we shall succeed, each one in some definite field, and that each one who uses his abilities to the best advantage will make his position a worthwhile one and a distinguished one, whether he be a manuol laborer or the President of the United States. As to the perils which we are to encounter, if we ore forever mindful of our own conduct and of the conditions that surround us, we may avoid certain catastrophies and derive beneficial experience from the inevitable ones. Above all, says the Oak, we are to purify our consciences and then let them guide us throughout life. Thirty-Four AUTOGRAPHS AUTOGRAPHS
