★ Published by January Class of 1935 ★ Collinwood High School Cleveland, Ohio ★ To The Class o f January 1935 A task, a plan, and freedom—these three life should offer. An arm to do, a brain to plan, a heart to dare—these are yours for long pull or soaring flight. The task found, the plan wrought, the freedom won— this is success at its highest. To you, who dream and plan and dare, may tasks be given not beyond your powers, but enough to test in deeds your dreams and plans and daring. 2 ★ PEGASUS ir Long ago, the Greeks told the story of Pegasus, the winged horse: How he wandered over the sunny fields of Mt. Parnassus where lived the Nine Muses, guardians of all the arts; Of how Pegasus was caught and tamed by Pallas Athenae, Goddess of Wisdom, so that he might be used by those who wish to mount on the wings of imagination. ★ This story the Greeks told when they spoke of knowledge and adventure, for they saw how great was the Spirit of Pegasus, flying with powerful sweeps of his great wings through infinite space, bearing aloft to the high places foot-weary seekers after truth and beauty. if The class of January 1935 has mounted Pegasus and is taking off on its flight into the unknown heights. It flies forth undaunted, confident in the knowledge that the Spirit of Pegasus is guiding and protecting its flight. BETA Hl-Y ★ 2 Then whoso will with vertuous deeds assay To mount to heaven, on Pegasus must ride And with sweete poets verse be glorifide EDMUND SPENSER 22 ★ TRIAL FLIGHTS The tenth grade marked the first short if OUR FIRST SOLO FLIGHT flight of our class. We didn't get very far, but we didn't fall many times. During the tenth grade, several members of the class received recognition of their scholastic work in the form of the Junior High Honor Pin. The names of the members of the class receiving this pin are: Helen Sodja Jack Forman Ernest Haberland William Lysoght Lillian Fain Olga Godec Marie Baggott Ruth Dunlap During the tenth grade also, Helen Sodja was chosen as Best Citizen, and Grade Representative. On this our first flight, we noticed for the first time certain members of the class. Sobolovitz, Lundblad, Ken-nelly, and Oros became members of the reserve football squad. Even this early, it wos seen that in basketball, Joe Oros, would be one of the leading players in the city of Cleveland. Gone are the Student Council dances and parties at which we frolicked so gayly; gone also the joy of making up Christmas baskets for the needy. Our first flight was a success in that it pointed out to us the pleasure of striving for scholastic honors and social school activities. In the eleventh grade, we started on our if SECOND SOLO FLIGHT second flight; a flight a little longer, a little more successful, in which we could see a little better where we were going, and how to travel safely In the annals of this period, wo find o great deal of fun, and, although our teachers may not believe it, a considerable amount of work. A competition was started between the boys and girls for attendance at the dances. As a result of the competition, the girls won several dozen lolly-pops. Bill Patterson won the mmiature-golf championship of Cleveland and Helen Davis took third honors in the school trumpet contest. •23 • THIRD SOLO FLIGHT As we near the final phase of our flight, the skies become cloudy and the going rough, but we have full confidence that under the leadership of our four horsemen, the way will be made smoother and we shall ride to further glory and moke our journey one of the most outstanding in school history. As 12B's we had the honor!?) of receiving the Spotlight Tin Cup, having lost in the subscription contest. We had our revenge, however, when we in turn, as 12A's, presented it to the present 12B's. During the twelfth grade also, Howard Bailey hos been the first to receive the newly established aeroplane trophy. As 12B's we chose as our class colors. Blue and Silver. Our 12B party was a great success with the gay-colored dresses of the girls making a bright picture against the blue and silver decorations. As 12A's, we chose Pegasus as our class emblem. Ruth Dunlap made two very attractive designs of the emblem One of these was used in the class book-plates and tags, I2A Party napkins and donee programs; the other one on the Booklet cover. A number of our members have won recognition in various fields, but this will be taken up elsewhere. LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the class of January 1935, being about to take flight into the unknown, and realizing, with regret, that there will be many things which we cannot take with us, do hereby bequeath them, in this, our last will and testament, to those who can best use them. We, the class of January 1935, do give and bequeath to our beloved schoolmates (the 12B's) our best wishes for their success, and our regret that we can no longer be with them. We also leave to the aforementioned class, our gracious dignity and our pleasing manners, together with our earnest prayer that they will make the fullest possible use of them. The class of January 1935, also bequeaths to the class of June 1935, the immense task of finding someone to re- 24 • place Ruth Dunlap in the quantity and quality of art work done for the school Bert Jackson bequeaths his Ford roadster to any 12B who is man enough to get it started. Mory Elizabeth Johns cheerfully bestows her unequalled ability at producing excuses on short notice, upon William Thomas. Frank Papke wills his knowledge of German to Erhardt Dabringhaus, feeling that Erhardt is strong enough to stand it. Dorothy Lowe passes on her ability at gum chewing to Geraldine Bailey, hoping that Geraldine may, after continuous effort (which she seems willing to put forth) become, if not a rival in this art, at least a passable imitator. Helen Sodja bequeaths her mountainous stack of books to Ruth Carlson, hoping that she will make equally good use of them. Ezra Tait and Cyrus Caveney leave their unsurpassed ability to annoy the Booklet Committee, to anyone who is low enough to use it. Mary Kilpatrick wills and bequeaths her Scotch tenacity of purpose and ability to wear down her opponents, to the 12B in greatest need of it. Olga Godec wills and bequeaths her charming voice to Cinderella Paradiso. The boys in 12A Electrical Shop freely bestow their record for excellent work, on the boys of the I2B Shop. They are sure that if the aforesaid 1 2B boys will study their record carefully, they may become, in time, if not as good, at least very acceptable. Lillian Bloomberg wills her gift of gab to Sylvia Silver. William Sneller presents his versatility in music to Louis Izanec. Max Yeran generously bestows upon the 12B Treasurer, Ralph Frey, whatever monies may remain in the I 2A Treasury at the end of the year, ot the some time trusting that ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 25 Ralph has particularly opplied himself to the study of negative numbers, while in algebra class. Ruby Gorham wills her Latin books to Mary Virginia Fogarty. Joe Milner bequeaths his chiseling ability to Bob Joyce. if Arvillo Mills bequeaths Joseph Zele her ability to fall asleep in class. Jason Friedlander bestows upon Joe Cocita his habit of arriving later than meets with the full approval of the faculty. Colvin Frazer wills some of his avoirdupois to Joe Verkler. Milford Phillips hands on his side-burns to any 1 2B who thinks that sort of thing would enhance his manly beauty. Howard Bailey leaves his ability to win his aeroplane trophies to the most air-minded of the 1 2B's. Sanford Blank wills his footsteps to any 1 2B who cores to follow in them. Orazio Sipari leaves his curly locks to John Finnegan, while Iggy Goodrich donates his penetrating whistle to the l2B's for use by their chairman in 366. Helen Davis bequeaths her low opinion of men to Martha Moritz. if And in conclusion, we, the class of January 1935, gratefully and sadly hand back to our teachers and advisers, the time and hard work and humorous understanding that they have expended upon us, in order that these things may be expended once more, and yet once more, as is the way of life, upon the classes which will follow us. 26 Name Abramovich. As we near the temple, the white-robed priestesses of Apollo, god of the Sun, are marching in procession and chanting his praises, for lo! already his chariot is rising high in the heavens. ★ It is to a spacious chamber in the innermost depths of a deep cavern that we must penetrate to consult the mighty Pythoness, famed priestess of the great Oracle. Calm, impassive, she listens to our plea for just o glimpse into the future; her eyes still impenetrable, she motions us to follow her. Our anxious eyes now discern o crevasse gaping at her feet. Over this crevasse hangs a fine mist which thickens and sways as we fall into silence. The Pythoness slowly closes her eyes as she sinks upon her tripod. Her body sways gently in the vapor. The chanting of the priestesses grows ★ louder in the distance—rises—falls. In the vapor, the priestess seems to grow—larger—larger The chanting swells and dies. If he asks her for the pleasure of a dance, and he will, they will rub elbows with Sanford Blank, wealthy boiler manufacturer, and that radiant movie actress, Mary Johns. The orchestra, under the direction of Orazio Sipari, has stopped, and Walter Watson, Master of Ceremonies, has token the microphone. He announces the Pepsadento Toothpaste Hour. Miss Pepsa Dento will sing. •29 From between the velvet curtains, at the rear, comes forth Olgc Godec, world-renowned contralto. Miss Godec enters amidst a shower of applause, and, resplendent in her white satin evening gcwn, sings the famous songs of Pepsa Den to. Members of the orchestra include Mary Sablak, trombone, William Sneller, pianist, and Chuck Percival, cymbals After Miss Pepsa Dento has left the microphone, the orchestra strikes up a Spanish tune and Max Yeran escorts Violet Moylin to the waxed disque where they artistically execute a tango. Ah, what grace! What beauty! The music fades away—the scene dies with the music. The mist swirls before us once more, and we see the Pythoness, muttering on her tripod. The song of the priestesses rises in a rhythmic chant. Once more the mist comes to life, and assuming a deep red hue, it writhes and twists as a serpent in pain. Taking form, the color separates into a lorge russet patch and grouped about it are eleven spots of a similar tint. The shapes are more distinct now and—why it's our worthy president reading a bedtime story to eleven little Lysaghts. Again the mist changes, twists, fades, thickens, and the scenes pass with lightning rapidity THE YANKEE STADIUM + We seek familiar faces, but at first can find no one we know. It is not until Elmer Sobolovitz runs out with a new bat, that we realize he is bat boy. While marveling at Elmer's high position, we search the crowd. There's Helen Sodja cheering her hero. Occupying a box seot, is Ruby Gorham, assistant to Mr. Einstein, calculating the mathematical chances of the game. A FUNERAL PARLOR ★ A funeral is in progress. Attired in the black suit of an undertaker is Theodore Lundblad. Upon inquiry we find that the deceased is dear old Charles Homework. He passed oway after a long-drawn out sickness. But we shall not know how it turned out, for the mist is once more nothing but mist, and the Pythoness stares at us again with her blank, impenetrable stare. ★ 31 CLASS TABLET I TABLET II TABLET III ★ HONOR ROLL Pegasus again spreads his wings and this time he leads us to the Temple of Fame. Along the walls are hung huge tablets of marble on which are inscribed the names of members of the class of Jonuary '35 who have received honor and recognition. ★ On the first tablet, we read the names of those who have guided us through the fogs and storms of our last year: William Lysaght, president; Vinson Reinhard, vice-president; Mary Sablak, secretary; Max Yeran, treasurer Next comes a brilliantly lighted tablet of many colors, bearing the names of those who have attained the highest scholastic honors. The great doors swing open. We leove the dim cool interior, and pass under the towering white pillars of the portico. The doors swing shut behind us. The record is written. The names are graven, and can neither be added to nor taken from. But as we stand, thoughtful, under the great pillars, we raise our eyes, and over the green hills we see other temples shining in the morning sun; temples where the marble tablets are still virgin, where no names have yet been inscribed. And with new courage in our hearts, new resolves for greater deeds in the future, we mount into the blue sky towards the dazzling temples on the far summits. 34 ★ AUTOGRAPHS ★ AUTOGRAPHS
