Boy Mariner Now, sharply etched against the evening sky, He turned, and cast his eager, anxious eye Across the slowly heaving, sullen sea That seemed to grasp and hold eternity. Then once again he turned to gaze Back to the shore, and through the haze Of yester-years he saw the welcome gleam. The calm and placid flowing stream On which his years had borne him far And brought him to that vague and mystic bar That cleaves the soul, and in the span Of which the callow boy becomes the man. Home and haven lay far behind; To these the lad could not be blind. Still, eagerly, with slight regret He quickly wheeled about and met With swelling heart the plunging sea That caught and held him intimately With its thrilling uncertainty. O God, dispel the misty dark, That questing youth may soon embark; For with the coming of the dawn The rising sun shall find him gone. —Frank Mlakar
