Then once again he turned to gaze Back to the shore, and through the haze Of yester-years he saw the welcome gleam. The calm and placid flowing stream On which his years had borne him far And brought him to that vague and mystic bar That cleaves the soul, and in the span Of which the callow boy becomes the man. Home and haven lay far behind; To these the lad could not be blind. Still, eagerly, with slight regret He quickly wheeled about and met With swelling heart the plunging sea That caught and held him intimately With its thrilling uncertainty. The commander: I am happy at this time to announce that eight members of the ship received the C'ollinwood Honor Pin, the highest scholastic award a pupil can obtain. They are: Josephine Anderson, William Dodge, Charles Fox, Genevieve Gcrcar, Kathryn Greshaugc, Philip Grimm, William Petti, and Ruth Rulon. Ruth, who leads in scholarship, has never made any grade but E all through high school. Twenty-five passengers were initiated into the National Honor Society because of their outstanding scholarship, leadership, character, and service. The officers of the society during the first semester of the school year 193 3-34 are: William Dodge, president; Ruth Rulon, vice-president; and Frances Stuchringcr, secretary. The members are: Genevieve Gercar, Josephine Anderson, William Petti, Kathryn Greshaugc, Joe Romano, Philip Grimm, George Thcucr, Henry Rcinhard, Frances Godina, Joe Medic, Charles Fox, Betty Myers, Alice Stanonik, Dorothy Archibald, Audrey Brindley, Bertha Drcifort, Frances Koejan, Paul Akers, Olga Vintar, John Thornhill, Nancy Queen, and Edith Bartels. Five more of the passengers will receive this honor before graduation. The Student Council has been piloted through many projects by a number of industrious 12A’s. George Theuer, president of the Council in the 12B and Philip Grimm, president in the 12A, were both excellent captains. George also held the office of treasurer in the 12A. Ruth Rulon deserves merit for her aid given the Council as editor-in-chief of the Spotlight, and as vice-president of the Council. Kathryn Greshaugc is honored for her work in the Honor Study Halls, and Henry Rcinhard for his work in making the noon movies a success. Charles Fox’s excellent work as commander of the rail guards deserves honor as does Anthony Sernel who has directed the student council orchestra. The publications of the school have been given much attention by three of our fellow passengers. They arc: Ruth Rulon, who has been on the editorial board of the Tower, has been literary editor of the Binnacle” and editor-in-chief of the Spotlight; Dorothy Archibald who has been make-up editor of the Spotlight; and Kathryn Greshaugc, who has been managing editor of the Spotlight and editor-in-chief of the Binnacle.” Alice Stanonik and Josephine Anderson who have appeared in the leading roles of The Swan,” The New Poor,” and The Valiant” arc both deserving of honor for treir excellent work. We honor William Petti for his many hours and excellent work in the school bank. Members of our class are not only given honor for their service in extra activities but in almost every department in the educational part of our school. We have found a few pupils who have done outstanding work in a certain department. The art department has three people who have made excellent records. They are: Mildred I.cdcl, Marion Caruso, and Clara Wyttcnbach. In the music department, Charles Mullin, Mardell Sydenstricker, Erna Burmeister, and Frances Stuehringer are the students who arc recognized. Anne Zelvis, and Anthony Sernel arc given recognition for their instrumental work. The English department gives honor to Frank Mlakar, who wrote the pageant for Commencement; Ruth Rulon, who had all E’s in English during junior and senior high; William Dodge, who had all E’s since the 9B; Kathryn Greshaugc, who had all E’s except 8A; and Josephine Anderson who had all E’s except 7B. Ruth Rulon is honored as the outstanding student in Latin. The mathematics department recognizes as its best mathematicians William Petti and William Dodge. In the fall of 1932, the first year in the Senate Football League, Collinwood outclassed all other teams, and won the championship. Due to the very fine record csablishcd that fall, the team played a charity game against Latin and was defeated for the first time by the score of 13-0. Much of the success of that season can be attributed to four members of our class, 1 larry Pahner, Mike Zappia, Walter Kovic, Joe Tomaro. Harry Pahner in the season of ’32 played end, and in ’3 3 played both fullback and end, making a letter each year. He has also earned two letters in basketball as well as one in track. He is a member of the Collinwood Varsity C” Club. Mike Zappia, president of the Varsity O' Club, besides earning a letter in football, has earned two each in basketball and track. Being ineligible for play in his last semester, he devoted his time to being assistant manager and doctor for the varsity football and basketball teams. Walter Kovic and Joe Tomaro, who also belong to the Varsity C” Club, alternated at the left guard position of the stalwart line of ’32. By earning a letter in track, Frank Mlakar also won admission to the Varsity C” Club. He was one of the city’s outstanding quarter-milers last spring as well as a dependable anchor man in the relays. Charles Lumadue won a letter in track in his senior year, thereby gaining admission to the Varsity C Club. He was one of Coach Pludson’s best half-milers. Another who is a member of the Varsity C” Club, but who is little known to others, is Joe Romano. Joe has been manager of the athletic teams during his high school career and is regarded by the players as the finest little manager in or out of captivity.” At his graduation, Mr. Charles Dunkel, faculty manager, will lose a most dependable and able assistant. ■ [28] THE BINNACLE 19 3 4 Although many do not know it, Coll in wood has a tennis team. It is not a recognized major sports activity and therefore the players receive little publicity. Robert Gardner has been one of Coach Weir’s most consistent players for three years. Charles Fox played for one year. These boys have given their time and energy for the school without receiving any rewards other than the personal satisfaction that comes with victory. There are also students who have gone out for some branch of athletics, but who were not successful in earning letters. They arc Edmund Rosenberg, Robert Duthie, Herman Lefkof, John Thornhill, Robert Weber, George Theuer, Oscar Anker, Chester Disantis, Robert Ehinger, and Lewis Goss. Besides participating in athletics, George Theuer won the Greater Cleveland Health contest when a 10B, thereby winning one of the two scales the school now possesses. 2 3vf 9 Girls’ Sports Three girls who have done outstanding work in the Physcal Education Department are Kathryn Greshauge, Frances Stcuhringer, and Jean Capasso. Kathryn Greshauge, who was a Greater Cleveland I lealth contest winner and receiver of one of the school scales, has been a student leader for live semesters and by her personality and manner easily won the respect and confidence of other girls. At all times she has been a pleasant and capable assistant to Miss Mary H. Steeds, senior girls’ athletic instructor. Frances Stuehringer has been one of Miss Steeds’ most reliable helpers. She was always willing to accompany at the piano or to assist any of the student leaders. She has been a capable and cooperative worker. As a basketball captain, Jean Capasso has been most successful. I Icr homeroom was always represented by a complete team. On several oceaisons she has had three teams in the gym ready for play. As a leader and an organizer in athletics she is unsurpassed. [29] 19 3 4 THE BINNACLE THE SAILORS BEQUEATH Wc, tlx efficacious Class of January, 19)4, being in good health and of sound mind (although the l2B’s would have you believe otherwise) do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament. Article One To Mr. Frank P. Whitney, skipper of the good ship, Collinwood, wc bequeath the right to guide other sailors in their voyages, wishing him a calm sea and fair skies. To Mr. Carl J. Stringer, pilot, is left the dull routine of an uneventful sailing, which must of necessity be his after our departure. We also grant to him such sundry duties as arc explained in detail in Article Three. Article Two The 12B's have already received from us a beautiful loving-cup which they erroneously believe to be tin. We wish hereby to correct this mistaken idea, for the cup is made of shect-meial. May they in turn be as magnanimous as we! We also present to the June class the traditional right of every 12A—getting by with murder. Article Three: Minutiae Henry Reinhard, commander, bestows upon George Bowen his qualities of leadership. Bill Dodge’s vocabulary, which has astounded so many of us, is reluctantly granted to Ray Thomas, whose friends, it is said, are forced to consult Webster in order to appreciate Ray’s linguistic ability. From all of Frances Kocjan's great gifts, she selects her secretarial ability to go to Jane August. Bill Petti, whose coquetry is unsurpassed, graciously permits Roscoc Fulgan to try his best to approach it. Be prudent, Roscoe! Ruth Rulon leaves the somewhat doubtful joys of writing editorials to the next editor-in-chief of the Spotlight. George Theuer has decided to entrust his refulgent top to Mr. Stringer, whom he considers the only one who can really appreciate its rosy glory. George has arranged for careful redistribution, however. Mr. Stringer is to hand it to Harry Knox for the next semester, and, in subsequent 12A classes, to anyone who meets the obvious physical requirements. Neal Lytle hasn’t the slightest idea what Adonis-like qualities arc, but having been told that he possesses them, he casts them upon Eddie Warren, the most likely recipent. Are you sure you don’t want them yourself, Neal? The heart-warming friendliness of Jeanette TeLoken becomes the property of May Brown. To the next commander of the guards, Charles Fox leaves the privilege of trying to keep the lobby free from 12A’s who insist upon congregating there to do their civics homework. The histrionic talents of Alice Stanonik, actress extraordinary, arc presented to Ellis Lucas, the most worthy aspirant. With a grand gesture, Paul Akers bequeaths his bashfulness to Bob McPcak. It’s very becoming. Bob. Kathryn Greshauge bestows upon June Pohlman her incomparable dignity. Finding that he no longer needs his crutches, Jack Thornhill joyously tosses them to Clarence Reilly who—alas!—is not so fortunate as Jack. Bob Hodder’s cheerful grin, which he employs so consistently, is passed on to Vincent Nahrstedt with instructions that it appear on all occasions. Although we hate to part with it, we give Nancy Queen’s good nature to Helen Sodja. Frank Mlakar offers to give his witty remarks to anyone who can constitute others as clever. Is that a threat or a promise, Frank? Evelyn Weber and Bill Finn concede their hilarity to Evelyn Kelly and Tom Henry. The inimitable walk of Edmund Rosie” Rosenberg can go to only one person— Tony Cannarozzi. Jimmy Hall becomes the proud possessor of Ed Sawnson’s line, absolutely guaranteed to slay ’em all. Mike Zappia and Harry Palmer’s athletic ability will be dealt impartially to Joe Oros and Dick Nardi, while Joe Tomaro grants to Bob Tait the right to imitate his haircut. Connie Gregory’s nonchalance is something not to be parted with lightly, but we offer it to anyone who can prove himself worthy of it. To Betty Dcl.ong, Genevieve Gerenr bequeaths her dependability, which has been such a comfort to us all. Josephine Anderson and Bob Ruic present their air of good-fellowship to Marjorie Bender and LeRoy Peterson. The class as a whole demonstrated its efficaciousness by winning the Spotlight drive, thereby availing itself of the privilege of presenting the 12B's with a loving-cup. Under the direction of several members of the class, the Student Council was managed most efficiently. The noon movie organization will miss the boys who have played the important part of operators. The commander of the hall guards, the lieutenants, and many of the guards themselves have been members of our class. I Ierc arc more facts: 12A-1 A clan president wc all admire is Henry Reinhard. The playing of Gilbert Rogge and Norman Price in the senior hand is all that can be desired. Charles Fox handled the guard system most conscientiously. The courage and fortitude of Stanley Bolta is admired by everyone. The faculty could desire no better student manager for athletics than Joe Romano. The math ability and also the executive ability of William Petti deserve a word of praise. Everyone concedes William Dodge first honors for his high standard of work in science. The good natures of Neal Lytle and Bob Hoddcr have pulled them through many a tight place. George Thcucr't work in the Student Council has always been a high spot in our class. The basketball ability of Chester DiSantis is worthy of notice. A word of praise should Ik- given to Charles Lumaduc for his track accomplishments. Fred Gardner should be complimented on his work in the Glider Club. Jerry Petkovvek and his work of business manager in homeroom deserve praise. The quietness of both William Sadler and Lawrence 'X’agncr does not at all show their industriousness. The cvcr-ready jokes on the tongues of Earl Stover and B. b Ruic make them well appreciated. The crooning of Willard Gcrt . has drawn many a laugh. The carefree attitude of Joe Demshar is always an inspiration. Bob Ehinger’s interest and participation in athletics is known to all. Charles Abramonitz’s playing in the senior orchestra merits a compliment. Elmer Condo. Charles Corbett, Bernard Mulligan, and Bob Gardner arc hall guards of the first caliber. Frank Doles indifference to weighty matters has gained him many friends. Joel Modica's seriousness shows his plugging nature. The mature actions of Lyle Vl’illiamson earn him the respect of all. Paul Akers is always back and forth in the interest of good citizenship. Fred Scheldt is quiet but full of worth-while ideas. 12A-2 Kathryn Greshauge certainly got results from those gym classes she directed. Jo Anderson and Alice Stanonik produced the very best possible results in the many plays in which they have taken part. Mildred Lcdcl and Clara Wyttcnback's art it all that can be desired. Florence Steiner braved the dangers of taking Virgil and Cicero the same semester, and pulled through. As for Mardell Sydenstricher and Frances Stuehringer’s piano playing, nothing need be said. Betty Sharick and Betty Fleidtman may not have set out to do this, but they've earned the reputation of being a Damon and Pythias pair. Nancy Queen’s well-timed questions have staved otf many a recitation. Dot Archibald has proved herself a good salesman, despite the fact that tickets and receipts just would get lost. Janet Ohly and Natalie Peters arc better looking cs’cry time wc sec them. Audrey Brindley proved to be a most efficient hall guard lieutenant, while Edith Bartels filled the position of information girl very capably. Florence Sobolovit . learned to parlez-vous quite fluently. Betty Myers did a little bit of everything, and did it well. Dot Meinkc’s air of good fellowship is still expanding. Fiazcl Grove and Elsie Duvall conquered those fears which assail all honor study hall chairmen and proved that they had the right stuff in them. Marion Caruso’s drawings arc rhe envy of all of us inartistic ones. Jean Schuclc has acquired the position of being a very charming person. Bettic Licbncr has demonstrated that her exuberant spirit can arise above any difficulties. Olga Vimar proved that small people may yet be mighty. Anne Tel vis is convincing proof that a pupil may enter a class late and still become one of its most outstanding members. Margaret Lays and Edna Govan were two guards who helped manage noon movie crowds. Victoria I.upo dui Iter bit towards keeping homeroom records straight. Genevieve Gcrcar distinguished herself as being the only girl in the class who minored in math, even [32] THE BINNACLE 19 3 4 surviving solid geometry. Jean Capasso lias shown that a captain of the homeroom basketball and speed-ball teams can produce very satisfactory results. Robina Campbell hat developed a very companionable and sociable manner. Dorothy Richards has proved that she can be a lady even in the most difficult situation. Ruth Rulon’s cheerfulness and friendliness have never diminished, even though she ha obtained excellent results in both scholarship and leadership. 12A-3 Harry Pahncr’s broad shoulders have proved their worth in basketball, football, and track. Lewis Goss, in wrestling, has tossed many an opponent down on the mat. Oscar Anker garbs his physique in the uniform of a captain of hallguards. A real treasure in the school bank is Henry Horn. All hail to the main-springs of the Student Council Properties Committee, Alex Savisky and Bill Tisi. Joseph Medic has also been indispensable in the Student Council, serving on many committees. Stewart Boyd and Dominic Hribar—silent men—yet we know them to be all-wise in their silence. Here is a salute to those dispensers of exotic dance music—Anthony Sernel and Stephen Stefancic. These are the boys that have made the wheels in the auto shop go around and kept the teachers’ cars in shape: Sherman Broka, Paul Law. Edwaid Krisch, and iIr- four William’s: Chambers. Dodd, Blcwctt, and Schultz. Embryonic engineers in the making, these boys have served their apprenticeship giving service in the electric shop. Russell Abbey, Edwin Barbie, Robert Rasnrr, Goddard Forbes, and Vernon Wentz. Thomas Edison’s followers had better look to their laurels when these boys begin to practice their science. Their brothers, the draftsmen, have given their time and energy to redesigning machines in the department. Albert Zagar, Joseph Medic, and Anton Pirman have proved adept in making fancy lines become practical plans on paper. Much of the school’s printed matter has been run off by the skilled hands of James Sloan in the print shop. Amid the spinning lathes two boys have guided the intricate pieces of mechanism, Joseph Lcllis and Frank D’Avirro. Many of their efforts have found a practical use around the school. Edward Sadar helped construct the stage scenery for The Swan.” The art work of Bob Blitz, has become well-known in the building. Frank Krasoc and Edward Fritz two boys responsible for the success of the Visual Aid service. Bill Kastelic struts around the hall, a proud lieutenant of the guards. 12A-4 Angie Semcrar, Dorothy Affeldt, Ruth Coulter and Mary Eramo have been very efficient secretaries during their high school careers. Sports have interested these girls: Margaret Pollock, Ursulc Boturis, Pauline Ccrio, Lucille Dclmonti, Angela Iosuc, Doris Shannon, and Lucille Pierce. Caroline Berardanclli. Frances Krncl, Violet Pasquale, and Verona Witkauskas gave service to the hall guard system. Jeannette TeLocken and Nora Petronelli were the student councilors for the homeroom with Ida Farrie as business manager. Jane Clemmons gave service to Honor Study Halls while Norah Grogan gave her services in the faculty tea room. Music afforded much interest for Conway Gregory and art seemed the most important thing to Marie Roihcnbcrg. Household Management had the services of Burdelle Schardt during her last semester. 12A-5 The hall guard system has been greatly helped by the services of John Cuthill, Herman Lcfkof, Steve Rasrattcr, Edward Swanson, James Tarantino, and Ted Tcchman. The officers that the Vs have contributed to the system arc Lester Uingell, lieutenant; Jack Ranilovic, captain; Edmund Rosenberg, lieutenant; and Bob Weber, lieutenant. Not only competent guards, but also indispensable to the noon movies arc Bob Duthic, Stanley Nadrah. and Don Winkle. Bob Weber has demonstrated hi honesty and integrity as homeroom business manager and student helper of Mr. Hague. He and John Thornhill gave willing service to the booklet literary committee. Another movie man is Frank Chesnik, who was the able student councilor of the 12A-Vs. Anthony Hrcn. Walter Kovic and Frank Kovsca (who was one of the musicians in the Student Council orchestra), are the bankers. Mathew Pasquale learned to croon” and played with the Student Council orchestra. Vincent Balaban, a willing helper to all, is deserving of special recognition for his work as student helper of Mr. Hague and Miss Diet . Charles Mullin also worked for Mr. Hague. The Spotlight staff is indebted to John Citraro and James Fisher for their work as printers. Joe Tomaro couldn’t stand being dropped from the roster of Collinwood athletes, even though he had too many semesters. He has an enviable record as football manager. And now, with U hattaman Philip Grimm, who has climaxed his serviceable record with attaining to the presidency of the S. C, we close this brief synopsis of the versatile service of the 12A-5’s to the school, by which their efficaciousness is proved. 12A-6 Eleanor Breyley stands high in commercial work — probably the result of hard study. Bernice Johnson has attained results by never losing hope — a dirficult task with English test, power tests, et cetera. I.eah Rolnilc has bound her many friends to her with hoops of steel” because of her merry Hi!” on meeting them. Bertha Drcifort has remained optimistic through her years at high school. Louise Jenkins has gained a fine reputation—that of being a true friend. Evelyn Weber excels in dancing. Frances Kocjan has proved that she is an excellent secretary. Eleanor Marolt is one g r who can keep quiet. Florence Murphy has got results by her willingness to help anyone who needs aid. Julia Krassa is one of the neatest girls we have ever seen—neatness is certainly a virtue. Wanda Barlag. though innocent looking, we are told, has an unlimited amount of sarcasm (friendly, of course). Elvira Scafert laughs and makes us all laugh. Frances Godina warms our hearts with her friendliness. Beatrice Stanley gets results when she cats pickles and ho: dogs—the result is a tummy ache. Rose Pieely delights us with her excellent sense of humor. Iola Todd has been an 'efficacious' student councilor. Erna Burmcister is a singer whose voice has delighted more than one weary senior. Joyce Kogler, by being careful, got results in sewing. Evan a Kramer's hair makes us admire her. Amelia Lee thinks more than she talks. Beatrice Lewis, by her neatness, has won many friends. Caroline Prot . radiates joy, making us all become happy. Helen Reynolds' meekness impresses us. Mildred Richter’s smile, which she gives freely, cheers us up. Ruth Riddle gets results with her flaming hair—all of us 'neutrals become envious when we sec it. Mike Zappia—the range and quality of his activities can be matched by very few. HE BINNACLE 19 3 4 BON VOYAGE It is early morning. On the grey harbor arc tall and stately ships, riding quietly at anchor. They rise and fall gently, as the waves from the great ocean beyond the bar swell and subside, languidly lapping the sides of the vessels. They are newly painted and fitted out; alow and aloft from truck to keelson they arc trim and shipshape. With all their supplies and their cargo snugly stowed, they seem to heave and strain on their cables eager to heed the call of the great mother beyond. The sun creeps up in the sky. The gray mist lifts. Across the harbor the sea becomes blue and sparkles invitingly. With the coming of dawn their restlessness increases with fretful impatience at the tantalizing delay. Now they arc hove to in readiness for their final voyage. They will not sail together in a fleet as they have done in the past, but each ship will set out alone. Some will have quiet uneventful voyages with fair winds and smiling skies. The bows of others will cast aside foam in uncharted seas and will heave to in strange harbors. All will find this journey easier because of the apprenticeship on the lakes. All their cruises thus far have been spent on inland lakes and bays in preparing. There they have learned how to handle the running gear, how to set the sails and hold the helm. They have learned to plot a course and to navigate. The breeze freshens and the milky sails billow. One by one they slip through the channel and drop their pilots astern. As each rolls by the lighthouse it dips its flag and fires a salute to the beloved harbor. With sails all set and their tackle running free, they merrily roll away until the last spar sinks below the horizon and all arc gone. Bon Voyage!
