Deep in the heart of the Jungle is a secret lair. The ferns are disturbed and a tawny figure stands out in dazed bewilderment. It is a lion cub, inexperienced as yet in the ways of the forest. The vast jungle seems full of possibilities and fraught with many dangers, but the cub turns, alert to meet the future. In that manner the January class of 1931 made their entrance four years ago when they stood upon the threshold of high school. They entered their freshmen year with the same timorous mien and cautiously watched the actions of the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Becoming more confident, as did our cub, they, in their sophomore year, realized more fully their responsibilities and determined to bring their class through with flying colors, and achieve the supremacy that a class of their type should and would secure. The courage portrayed by their symbolic lion was with them even then; and. as it was king and leader, so they would be. Juniors!—and with that attainment came their participation in many social activi ties. Who can forget the performances given by I.ois Altman, Robert Johnston, Rennet McGee, Ray Franzen, Al Taylor, and Max Malavasic in Quality Street,” Pickles,” and The Thirteenth Chair?” These members of their class and others justly earned the applause of the entire school (including the present 12B’s!). It was at this time too, that they mourned the departure of Mr. Earl Gudinkunst as their grade adviser, and welcomed the coming of Papa” Stringer, a man well versed in the art of living peacefully in the heart of a jungle! Leaders in the Jungle, leaders in studies, they determined also to be leaders in new ideas. This plan was carried out when as 12B’s their homerooms were united into a single body in Room 201. Their first great achievement was the election of class officers. Much growling and fur-flving took place before they wisely chose Norma I.ockner, president; Edward Murray, vice-president; Lois Altman, secretary; William Novince, treasurer. Next in line was the choice of colors and a name. Green and white were chosen to represent the jungle; and the entire school bowed in admiration as the class proudly came forward with its unexcelled adjective, LEON rOCEPI 1ALOLJS”—(lion-hearted), which they considered typical of the past and symbolic of the future. It was at this time, too, that they staggered the school with their original choice of modernistic rings. The social peak of the 12B career was achieved at the prom, voted by students and teachers alike, One of the best. Then came that day in September when at last Lcontocephalous, a cub no longer, green and white ribbons fluttering ’round his massive throat, his tawny head reared proudly, a fascinating picture of might and strength, surveyed his surroundings— King of the Jungle” at last! It was after the unanimous re-election of their 12B officers at the beginning of their 12A term, that they honored the 12B's with a dance, which proved a huge success. The entire jungle suffered an irreparable loss from the death of their comrade, Ellen Cameron on October 6, 1930. The Senior Prom, December 18, was an event long to be remembered. Under the flickering light of the huge electric sign, Francis Solomon, toastmaster, wittily intro- [25] - T HE LAIR duccd the speakers, Mr. Stringer, Norma Lockncr, and Mr. Whitney. Mr. Whitneys conception of the meaning of the class adjective evoked much laughter from those present. Class night, January 15, introduced Leontoccphalous” for the first time to the world. A short play Gas, Air, and Karl” enacted by Helen Fox, I-ida Merritt, Anne Lckan, Jack Palmer, and Al Reithoffer, under the direction of Miss Charlotte Bockes, was the main feature. Miscellaneous acts, under direction of Mr. Guy Hague and Max Malavasic, provided the rest of the entertainment. Finally, Commencement. In keeping with their ever present tendency toward the unusual, their commencement exercises portrayed William Novince, as a bewildered and innocent youth, who received constructive advice from Robert Johnston (as the Spirit of Learning”) Bcnnec McGee (as Life’’) and from other spirits who convincingly interpreted the various elements of human emotion and environment. [26 J THE L A i R Jubilee Day in the Jungle ar and vi ide were known the deeds of the Tribe of Leontocephalous, but on the day of recognition, the whole jungle assembled to pay homage to them. The trumpet blasts welcomed the approach of the leaders in sports and in scholarship, as the parade neared the reviewing stand where sat the great judges, Mr. Frank 1 . Whitney, Mrs. l.ucy Carr, Mr. I . L. Simmons, Mr. P. S. Yost, Mr. C. H. Hudson and Miss Mary Steeds. Coach Yost summoned Max Malavasic to the platform beside him. Turning to the other lions he smiled and said, You, the 'Leontocephalous’ ones, can well be proud of your jungle-mate, Max. As a cub, he played tackle on the Junior High football team that won the city championship in 1927. As he grew older and became more sure of his abilities, he became varsity captain. His fierce attack struck fear to the hearts of opponents as he brought them swiftly to ground. 1 gladly present Max with his third football ‘C’ as right tackle. The applause of the jungle kings greeted Max as he took his place beside his friends in the audience. The next lion to be recognized is bill Novince,” continued Mr. Yost. Erma stepped aside to make room for Frances Moody. Eleanor Scott, Angelyn Bogus, and Helen Fox. These girls moved back, and Miss Steeds called forward the basketball players, Lois Stewart, Helen Fox, forwards; Betty Bechtel and Eleanor Parry, guards, through many successful games against other homerooms. Miss Steeds then called forth Lois Altman, who had received recognition as a health contest participant when a cub. and William Novince and Helen Fox, who had won their places as healthiest boy and girl for the 11A grade. Amid a storm of applause those honored in athletics stepped aside. Mr. Whitney then stepped up to introduce Katherine Schneider, who in 1V28 fell into the deep swamp of Foreign Languages. Everyone thought she would be lost to the tribe forever. But, however, Katherine came through successfully, winning the French Medal in the city contest. Next in order came Ann Semerar who had set a record for all future sociology aspirants by making the highest score ever received in the mid-term sociology exam. Then,” continued Mr. Whitney, we have Sanford Ball who, as a cub, made excursions into the depths of the jungle and returned with many aviation trophies. These squads had caused much worry to the class but not to Ed and Cyril, who took by force all four, thus gaining first place in the Math division of the 12A power test. He then had the pleasure of recognizing Angelyn Bogus, w'ho had acquired the position of student teacher in chemistry—another victory for the tribe. She was the first girl to work as a teacher’s assistant, in the chemistry lab in the Collin wood Jungle. Barbara Scott, who, while still a 12B, wandered into the dense wilderness of literature capturing an award with her short story. Not content with this conquest, she allowed her lucky spirit to lead her into the deep woods of Obcrlin College, where the ancient Tribes of Knowledge dwelt. Here the chiefs of the Obcrlin Clan bestowed upon her the English Scholarship. Mr. Whitney, calling the five remaining leaders to the front declared that he looked with great satisfaction upon the achievements of Betty Bechtel, Norma l.ockncr, Katherine Schneider, Grace Reinhardt, and Ed Murray, who received honor pins for scholastic work. � 4 � Suddenly, just as Mr. Whitney concluded, the audience was disturbed by a commotion. Bob had achieved much in many lines of endeavor before being honored by his fellow classmates. His athletic ability at basketball and football placed him in the limelight many times. Even his success in the school musical comedy field did not affect his modesty, a characteristic probably which did the most toward gaining him his office. Virginia Sandow Secretary Sandow has wielded a wicked pen during her term of office. Her natural lively qualities did much to help her fill her position. Virginia has been known to be most energetic in her service for the Student Council, having served in one capacity or another in this organization from the seventh grade to the twelfth. Virginia has been continually dubbed “Good Kid” and Good Scout”—our sentiments exactly. Charlotte Rutter Charlotte Rutter became the first lady of the class of '31. She has proven herself to be an executive of great resourcefulness. Her sunny personality remains the same throughout all trials and troubles. Charlotte will be remembered by the undergraduate body for her clever acting in The Thirteenth Chair, Quality Street, and “Monsieur Beaucaire. Albert Spehek One would hardly suspect happy, smiling Al Spehek of concealing heavy, financial troubles under that smooth, placid countenance of his. But he has done this and accomplished his task well. Spehek played a beautiful guard job in his three years at football. Lipton Club C 34 J Eurret X931 From Apprentice to Master Craftsman AtAVING at hand certain records concerning the many accomplishments i of this group. I have resolved to write its history, recapitulating some facts, supplying others that have been omitted, in order to hand down a record worthy of remembrance for times to come. Therefore the following will parade some of the honors that we have achieved during our high school careers. The greater part of our class was formed from the sixth grade graduates of the surrounding elementary schools, Nottingham, I ong fellow, East Clark, Bret Memorial, and Memorial. 1-ater we received many additions to the class from Patrick Henry and St. Jerome. One of the first bits of class history that we can lay claim to is that of being the first class in Collinwood to be divided into individual boy and girl homerooms. Now after this had come to pass, our next bid for recognition was in the winning of the basketball championship of the school, by defeating the 12A's. Then as 12A’s we again repeated this feat, by conquering the junior champs. Then Frank P. Whitney, by the grace of God, principal of Collinwood High School, conducted a vocational conference wherein we paid homage to our ambitions and aired our life plans. During this period many of us chose a goal, and set our course accordingly. Among the many honorable deeds performed that will be held in perpetual remembrance by fellow guild members, arc some of the dramatic and musical presentations, in which we participated. Do you remember Bob Henry and Yetive Todd in Pickles,” Charlotte Rutter in Quality Street and Thirteenth Chair; then too, there was Bells of Beaujolais” with Walter Mclvcr, Willard W'anke, Margaret Gifford, Charles Jones, Earl Mihnine, Josephine Fleming, Bob Henry, and Yetive Todd. The next big show following this was the Vanishing Princess starring Grace Schullian and Ray Lewis. But between there was also given Here We Are.” One of our latest accomplishments was Eincr Muss Heiraten, a German play featuring Bob Langhirt and Bob Esser. I will now relate some of the literary abilities of this class of June '31. We have had Lois Wilkins. Ruth Grant, Josephine Hogan, Josephine Belay, and Frank Brown on all of the school publications, the Spotlight, Class Booklet, and the Tower. Our high school life reached a minor climax during the election of class officers. We elected Robert Henry, president; Charlotte Rutter, vice president; Virginia Sandow, secretary; and Albert Spehek, treasurer. Following this we selected our class colors, green and black. Also, at this time, there was a committee chosen to select the rings. Now let us speak a little of the scholastic abilities of this group. David Leach and Robert Esser were our representatives in the competitive scholarship exams at Obcrlin College. David Leach won a scholarship in Latin, and Robert Esser. one in German. Doris Mason won a scholarship to Baldwin Wallace in a competitive examination. At the end of the 11 A, we had four pupils receive scholarship honor pins. They were: Russell Rol rts, Doris Mason. Lois Wilkins, and Ruth Grant. Then in the 12B. Joan Penko. Jean Walker, and Agnes Kantz received their honor pins. At the end of the 12B semester. Robert Esser. George Ross. David Leach, and Dorothy Wilson had been on the Honor Roll for three semesters. [36] 1931 ®lj turret Now turn we unto club activities. In the International Honorary Journalistic Society, (Quill and Scroll) wc had three members, Ruth Grant, Josephine Belay, and Frank Brown. In the Collinwood chapter of the Hi-Y, all of the members and officers were our class mates. Kenneth Day, John Stonehack, Victor Leckie, and Willard Wanke were officers. Ruth Grant held the presidency of both the Valerian and Friendship clubs. Lois Wilkins, Dorothy Stirling, Betty Snyder, Peggy Astley, Barbara Violett, Matilda Schonauer, and Grace Krause are the committee chairladies of the Friendship club. Drama and scholarship are not the only honorable enterprises that this guild has undertaken. Perhaps you can recall some of the athletic endeavours of our boys, Klug’s phenomenal forward attack, Henry’s tip off, or Iafelice’s superb guarding. More about our athletes is found on other pages. We have played a very big part in student control at Collinwood. Two Student Council presidents have been members of our class, Walter Mclver and Dan Galbraith. Other class members who arc officers in the Student Council are Doris Mason, Ruth Grant, Jean Walker, Albert Spehek. and Virginia Sandow. We have also contributed greatly to the hall guard system, having Walter Mclver, as commander of all the guards. All of the present captains and lieutenants are members of the group. Then too we have sponsored successfully two new undertakings, the Honor Study Hall and the noon movies. A class was established for the furthering of drama in Collinwood. This was called the 22 Playshop. During the year and one-half that it has existed, our class has been its most ardent supporter. Charlotte Rutter has done the most outstanding work in this project. But Charles Jones and Earl Milmine have been main factors in its success. Other 12A members are: Doris Mason. Ruth Grant, Bob Henry. Violet Miller, Margaret Meek. Howard Schwarzman. Henry Wieler, Melvin Whittle, Margaret Gifford, and Clara May Rutledge. Wc have also helped much in the success of some of the less important undertakings. The seniors on the Spotlight staff attended the N. S. P. A. (National Scholastic Press Association) convention held in Cleveland in December. Doris Mason was elected an officer on the All-Hi Council. We also placed a classmate on the Hi-Press. Albert Broadbent and Frank Brown were Collinwood representatives at the Cleveland Public Library’s Book Review Club. We also contributed greatly to the gym demonstration and Open House nights. There was the exchange of dances with the present 12B’s and the alumni. Our greatest social successes were the 12B and 12A proms held in the cafeteria. Another important event was the first induction of Collinwood pupils into the National Honor Society. East High School sent its representatives to conduct the very impressive ceremonies in which twenty-seven of our group were thus honored. All the officers of our National Honor Society are 12A’s. But the last chapter in our history was the most exciting—the Senior play, “Monsieur Beaucairc”, starring Charles Jones, and Charlotte Rutter; Class Night celebration, “Do Say—Just So”, headed by Walter Mclver, Marie Anderson. Ray Lewis, James Clark, Josephine Fleming, and Margaret Gifford; Commencement Night with Russell Roberts and Doris Mason as student representative speakers, and Bob Esser, Ruth Grant, and Jean Walker as faculty choice speakers. Last and most important of all was the receiving of our diplomas. [37] tC6t ■■n 193 I Elj ffiurr t Craftsmen Exhibit Skill in Jousts f HIS section is devoted to those athletes who in the last three years have served their apprenticeships, passed through the period of the journeyman, and now in the graduating class of June, 1931, are masters. Let us roll back the pages of Collinwood history and give recognition to those athletes who have played their last game under Collinwood colors. Dominic Iofalice: With the graduation of Dominic Iafalice comes the loss of one of the most versatile and consistent players that Collinwood has ever seen. He has been awarded two varsity letters for football and in these two years “Iaf” has never been injured. Those who saw him play will long remember his hard plunging and accurate passing. On the basketball court he was a mainstay of the Senate champs of 1930 and also of 1931. “Iaf” has won honors both years as a member of all-scholastic teams. Albert Spehek: A1 is another whose loss will be keenly felt. His driving, slashing type of play on the Collinwood gridiron was a pleasure to watch. A1 was never better than when pitted against a formidable opponent. There are a few athletes who can excel in scholarship, and A1 is one of these that is outstanding both on the gridiron and in the classroom. He came out for football in his junior year, and although he played on the varsity, it was not until last season when he played guard in every game that he won a well-deserved letter. Ed Exl: A few football men can fight liko wildcats. Ed Exl is one. He was easily the hardest and best tackier on the team. Ed played end during the 1929 and 1930 seasons and his end was a danger zone to opposing teams. Ed and his team-mates will always remember the Tiffin game when hardly a Tiffin play in Ed’s direction was successful. Exl also tossed the shot for Coach Hudson’s cinder pounders. John Klug: There is no better example of an athlete in this group than Johnny Klug. For three years he has participated in every major sport at Collinwood. In the tenth grade although John did not make the varsity, he played on the football squad the entire season. The next year he was headed for a varsity berth when he dislocated his shoulder. The same accident occurred the following spring in the Collinwood-Hcights track meet. Then last fall when Johnny was certain to make his letter, “crack” went the shoulder for the third time. Although John received nothing but doctor’s bills for his service on the Collinwood gridiron he deserves the highest recognition and honors a player can get. In track John made his letter when only a tenth grader. He has been a great help to Collinwood track for three years as a high-jumper, quarter miler, and dash man. as well as a participant in the broad-jump. On the basketball floor we see Johnny upholding the Collinwood banner in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades. John is also a letterman in this sport. He is one of the few three-sport athletes in the history of Collinwood. John Goodrich: For three years Johnny Goodrich has carried the pigskin through mud and grime for the Blue and Grey football teams. Goodrich has been an important cog in the varsity backfield for the past two seasons. In 1929 his stellar play was a good portion of the Railroader’s attack. Although handicapped by injuries throughout the past season his work at quarterback was exceptional [39] ®1? turret X93X and in Johnny’s strategy rested the play of the team. He is also known as a trackman. In the javelin and shot put events, Johnny has been a standby for the last two seasons. George Afacholls: It is the general conception that those athletes who make letters arc the ones who have given the most service. Not so, for if Collinwood gave letters for service, George Macholtz would have one. For three solid seasons George has been snapping the ball back from the center position to Collinwood backficld men. On the practice field there is not a more diligent worker. When a man sticks to it for three years you know what he’s made of. And although George doesn’t wear a letter he has laid a foundation in those three years that will carry him a long way. Pete Scaffidi: Pete Scaffidi is another who has served for three years on the football squad. During the past season Pete played quarterback on the varsity squad. He has also been a member of the Blue and Grey track team during'his entire high school life. Robert Henry: There is no Collinwood athlete whose fame is spread as far as Bob Henry’s. He has been an unanimous choice on All-Scholastic basketball teams for two years. There are few centers in scholastic basketball that can compare with Bob. The class of June 1931 certainly is proud to have as its member and as its president this athlete. Charles Jones: Track is Chuck’s long suit although he probably would be wearing a football letter too if he had not been forced to give up the sport before the season was over. In 1929 he played end on the football squad and during the past season he played tackle. In track Chuck has competed for three seasons and won his first letter when an eleventh grader. His events are the pole vault and high-jump, and for both he is well known. Chuck was one of the best pole vaulters in the city this season, and he has totaled a large number of points for Collinwood in his two events. Ray Lewis: Ray is one of those athletes who specialize in one sport. In Ray’s case it is basketball. In his three years of high school play he has played on the Collinwood seconds and on the varsity. Coach Newman will miss Ray’s familiar face when he calls for candidates next fall. Charles Wagner: Collinwood track loses a valuable man when Chuck Wagner receives his diploma. Chuck has run the dashes for Collinwood during the past two seasons. Both years he has won his varsity letter. In 1930 he was a member of the half-mile relay team that won at the Interscholastic meet. Many are the opponents that have seen Chuck’s heels. William Barnard: Quarter miler and 220 man on the track team, football man, and constant supporter of Collinwood. are the words which classify Bill among Collinwood’s athletes. Bill won his letter for track in 1930 and has been a member of the team for three years. Bill played football in his senior year. Robert Graf: Bobby Graf served as student manager of Collinwood athletics for two years and received his C for his work in that capacity. Bobby’s service will be remembered for a long time. Walter Melver: Wally was a member of the tennis team for two years and made a letter in that sport. He has gone a long way in boosting the tennis record of the school and he ranks as one of the most outstanding scholastic players in the city. Tennis isn’t Wally’s only sport, for last season he played varsity football. I 40 J 193 X JEurrrt These are only a few of the athletes of this class. A number of others have served on Collinwood teams and also deserve recognition. Roy Hartley, John Schulte. Carl Grissard, Grant Schwalm, Mel Whittle, and Guy Troiano all ran the distances for the Blue and Grey cinder artists. Orville Wilcox and Carl Lindquist are two hurdlers whom Coach Hudson will miss next year. Gail Fligle, Frank Rokavec, and Tony Pasquale have all been members of the football team while Tony Pasquale is a letterman in basketball, and one of the reasons why Collinwood won the Senate title in 1930. Add to this number all the non-varsity men. and it is plain to see why the guild members of the June 1931 class are proud of their athletes. £ OME of our guild members under the supervision of Miss Mary Steeds have acquired enviable records in the various sports and other athletic events staged. F.stcllc Kniffin, a gym leader of no mean ability, has excelled in archery. As captain she has led her basketball and baseball teams to many victories. During the last three spring semesters she has taken charge of the roof playground. The Open House events have always found Estelle taking active part in pyramid building and dancing. The Play Day events last semester were part of her activities. Betty Snider is noted for her ability in swimming. She excels in the American crawl, backward and forward. Each semester Betty has been a captain at the swimming pool. In the gym she has been an outstanding leader. During the annual Open House she has participated in the tumbling, dancing, and pyramid building. Track on many occasions has seen Betty coming through with honors in basketball throw and high jumping. Her basketball record as a forward has made her a star of the girls' courts. Jacqueline Cilibcrto has won letters in basketball and baseball. She has always appeared in the Open House events. Her courage and endurance in track have won honors for her in racing and baseball throws. She lias also served on the roof playground. Jean Walker is best known for her dancing, so often demonstrated in Open House events and gym exhibitions. She has won much notice by her swan dives. The roof playground has received much of her attention. In archery she runs a close second to Estelle Kniffin. She has always generously given her services as a gym leader and dance instructor. Virginia Ballous high jumping has always been a feature in track meets. She has participated in the tumbling, pyramids, and in the dancing in all the Open House events and represented us at Heights High School on Play Day. She has been most helpful on the roof playground, and as a forward in basketball and a shortstop in baseball she has been invaluable. Dorothy Nye was awarded a cup for breaking a record in high jumping, which still holds city-wide. She has been very active in baseball and basketball games. Others who deserve honorable mention as participants in Open House events and as gym leaders are: Dorothy Wilson. Josephine Fleming. Madolyn Bender. Matilda Schonauer. Charlotte Rutter, and Orpha Boulis.
