According to custom, we gave the Tenacious Ones’ a dance in the cafeteria. I)cc. 5 The Thirteenth Chair”—shivers and screams! Four seniors in it. Dec. 17 Trimmed in silver and old rose, the cafeteria was the setting for our semi-formal Prom! Did we have fun? Jack Murphy was toastmaster. Page fourteen “CONTACT” Over the Horizon HOW positively enjoyable ami enticing will the “We Flyers Inn” be to our hungry aces—especially with Marjorie Ott and Mary Rupnik the head waitresses. After a long spin through the air, how delicious Dorothy Hirsch’s hot doughnuts will taste to our heroes. Dorothy Steel and Edna Thomas, two of our most active workers, have already put in their applications as mechanics and if their tactics don't work, they’ll talk the planes into running. A new gas has been discovered by one Wildabclle Bosch on which a plane can run for three hours on one-half a gallon. First trials arc unnecessary. Roberta Wilcox is always out for a breezy time and declares she will marry anyone who really knows his airs. Beatrice Porter and Evelyn Dracgcr, beauty eulturists, are predicting a new fashion for women’s hair. Two long sideburns on either side and a little peak in the front is the mode. While revolving up on our “Hispos”, we wonder if Frieda Bartels, Hilda Klein, Marv Gentile, Geraldine Hogan, and Marion Pratt are going to be see’s” at general head-quarters. Eleanor Jordan, Margaret Jolly, Edith Rider, Catherine Rand, and Dorothy Quine all are going to start their careers in a two-room apartment and are going to follow up their “kiwis”. We all know that when off duty the aces will sec in the most exclusive beauty salons, pictures Mary I.ou Flanigan, Christine Howe and Mildred Cook will have posed for. When at the theatre or music halls, the squad is sure to see Audrey Moses and Phyllis Leach giving dramatic roles or Marion Faranacci and Anne Weisx warbling operatic selections. Alice Norton and Mary Perfors arc aspiring authors who will write about the future kiwis and aces. While not traveling around the world in their personal planes, Corrine Gray, Mildred King. Margaret Porter. Ruth Jordan, Rosalie Astlcv and Naomi Winkle plan to be ladies of leisure and stay at home. On the vaudeville circuit Lucille Hcnnig and Josephine Schultz will amuse the squad off duty. Page fifteen “CONTACT’' And then as a finish Kamilla Larson and Clara Chanon are going to he comptomctcrists at Ci. II. Q. The well-known lawyers George Stanley and Thane Laymon, are going to handle all accident cases for the Drome”. Midshipman David Mcriclc will show the latest thing in seaplanes to William Johnston, designer at the field. Kenneth Warren, producer of the play, Wingless Days”, written by Gus Klauminzer, plans to work at ground school to study up on fine points of flying before producing the play. ■; -••(“If Joe Infalvi will entertain the directors of the field with a song and dance act. Professor Harry Sehauss will teach Math at ground school. Harry Wheaton. John Ruie and Frank F.ntke will he employed as destruction engineers. (You know, dcstruct things.) Coach Edward Ackley predicts a great future for the field football team. Herbert Primosch plans to be publicity man for the field, aided by Jack Murphy. Bv their figures you shall know them. William Backus and Bob Satkovie take the positions of crack auditors in the company. The second Buddy Rogers, Adrien Truesdnle. is training to take the lead in the newest airplane thriller just about to be released by Paramount. William Hoffman will do tin- ground work on the newest plane. George and Harry Foster arc going to be salesmen of the Aircraft Corporation. Never to be late again Frank Coschia will wake the field up with his milk wagon at four a. m. Ernest Kaufman will be successful in inventing a plane that goes straight up with tin- help of Louis Pirc. Walter Arnold wants to be a cloud inspector for the U. S. under the direction of Bob Kenworthv. It’s such easy work. Wingless Kenneth Flanigan and Albert Anker will try to become flyers, hoping to use their experience as truck drivers to aid them. Breaking out in print Daniel Darnell and Arthur Davis are going to be reporters on the Plain Dealer in order that they may get passes to things. Because of his impressive voice, William Schleicher will be the radio announcer at G. II. Q. Bruce Umstcad and Mario Liatti will set up in business for themselves—an undertaking establishment near tin- field. They can expect lots of business. As they were entering the park they heard the Boyds singing in the Bash accompanied by the crying of a little lost Goarley named Rath. Since it was early in the afternoon the faculty jumped into their Newman bathing suits and Swicked out into the Donghtery water. As the air become Koehler they adjourned to Booth’s Eating Palace, where Miss Booth reigned as the supreme honorary chef. Mr. F. M. Carl was chosen for the position of Masters of Ceremonies. Mr. Carl, because of his experience trying to teach dumb pupils, physics, Could well appreciate a witty situation. Aside from the fact that he allowed Naujoks to be told he filled his position admirably. At the end of the meal he announced that it took a good Cook to make a big meal with only a Peck of potatoes and a Porterhouse steak. Seeing that the appetites were appeased, Mr. Carl stood up and asked for the attention of each and every member present. “As you all know, this party is ir honor of Mr. S. H. Hurt nek, who has received a raw Deal during his career. He will now be repaid by being presented with a brand-new Eastman Kodak.” Modestly Mr. Hurtuck marched forward and Neeles before his benefactors and murmured, “Thank you muchly, I mean MorleyV’ and immediately began to cry with great heart-rending sobs and wept Bahls of tears. Some one came running with Douglasses of Bopp and the hysterical man gulped them down. This big drink proved too much even for this husky man teacher and he had to be taken back to the hotel Allerton where he was staying. Miss Feniger offered to take him back in her limousine. Her chauffeur Hughes persisted in speeding all the way downtown. Upon their arrival at the hotel Miss Feniger called a doctor and Mr. Hurtuck was ordered to a hospital to a Simmons bed, where he was attended by nurse Prettss. His illness put a damper upon the spirits of the rest of that illustrious group and they all started for home. While driving home Mr. Matthias picked up a hitch-hiker, who said that he was a Carpenter and a Christiansen. After listening to him for about an hour Mr. Matthias was heard to shout, “Cowan! Get out of my machine.” So saying, he shifted his Gehres and started out for his home town, Co Zmpsville. On the way he ran out of gas and so he stopped at his friend’s house and asked, “McLennan me some money?” His friend replied, “Sorry, but I’m broke, you’ll have to go to Thompson’s for it.” At Thompson’s he found that Miss Nippell had previously borrowed all the money available. Mr. Matthias decided that life was not worth while and so went out and pushed his car home. Moral: Kindness is to do and say the kindest thing in the kindest way. Scott. Time passed and as we gradually became accustomed to the intricacies of Collin-wood’s many halls, we began to make ourselves known. We won banners in attendance and athletic contests until the seniors gave up in despair of ever triumphing over us and said, Those greenies!” With us the Thrift Club originated and we know that its membership has increased to a very large number. When we were in the ninth grade, Mr. L. S. Hunter became our grade adviser, and so—we became “Tenacious.” Later, when we were llB’s, we first saw our mascot, “Napoleon,” the English bulldog who symbolizes “TENACITY.” No one but Mr. Hunter knows whence “Napoleon” originated. However, it was and it still is one of our proud contentions that we were the first class at Collinwood to possess an authorized mascot. On April 25, 1929, two of our number took part in the Annual Senior Play, “Quality Street.” They were Mildred Sobolovitz, who played “Patty,” and Harold Boehm, “Ensign Blades.” Happy recollections bring to mind our 11A pin and picnic committee sponsored by Mr. Hunter, and made up of Florence Rothenberg, chairman; Fern Brindley, Grace Jones, William Schwed, Albert Miller, Lillian Westfal, Julia Jaco, and Anna Thomas. Our pins were replicas of “Napoleon” with ’30 engraved on his side. June 4, 1929, was the date of our picnic, which took place at Euclid Park. The boys played baseball with Mr. Hunter, Mr. McStay, and Mr. Ford, and we remember that it was Kenneth Field who made Mr. Ford strike out on three slow pitches which “breezed easily” across the corner of the plate. During the summer we were saddened by the death of one of our classmates— Richard Flanagan—whose absence from our midst is still deeply felt. When we returned to school in September as “Tenacious 12B’s,” we found our enrollment to be 238. Six weeks later we elected our officers after an exciting campaign. Philip Hintz became our president; Kenneth Field, vice president; Anna Gerbec, secretary; and Earl Linsz, treasurer. We adopted blue and gold for our class colors and in a motto contest conducted later by the “Tenacity” Board, Ruth Jones’ contribution, “VINCENS ET VICTURUS” (Conquering and still to conquer), was chosen as our class motto. On October 24, 1929, the musical talent in our class distinguishedly” manifested itself as many of our classmates took leading roles in the musical comedy, “Here We Are.” They were enacted by Frank Naisby, Paul Tyler, Angie Mancini, Maude Ferree, Isabelle Hemphill, Norman Burkhardt, John Herman, Christine Frazier, Duncan Lamont, and Tom McKnight. Ralph Ingram probably remembers his 12B history class in which Miss Collings asked him to tell some of the characteristics of our Revolutionary War leaders and he said: “Well, there was Anthony Wayne. He was a Pennsylvania farmer and he raised a regiment” All of us remember the three-hour Ohio State Psychology test we took with the “Ubiquitous 12A’s,” who found us intellectual rivals of the first caliber. Then there were nine of us who competed for scholarships at Oberlin College on October 26, 1929. We were pleased when the announcement was made that Joseph Maddox had won honorable mention in the chemistry examination. Well-initiated into the art of being seniors, we decided to get our rings and pins before the Christmas holiday, and so we got them—octagon-shaped with black “C’s” and miniature towers engraved therein. A facsimile of this emblem is to be found in the design on the cover of “Tenacity.” Page Twenty-five TENACITY MuniuRinuauiiinimmaiiiiaiim jm. iuxuM wim M. nr’.:: (Mt u: nnitii'iuiim.’iaini Many of us were ushers at the Commencement of the “Ubiquitous” class. There we had opportunity to visualize what was in store for us as succeeders to an unquestioned position and glorious prestige which are natural rights of all 12A’s. Then we reached this climax of our twelve years of school life! We were 12A’s! Our homeroom 333 immediately took on a dignified aspect, for housed within its already distinguished portals were almost two hundred of us. We still regret that our overwhelming number made it impossible for all of us to be assigned seats in 333. Our 12A5 homeroom had to be assigned to room 362. One of our first official acts in conforming to tradition was to entertain the unsophisticated and bewildered 12B’s with a dance in their honor. In keeping with their juvenility, we supplied them with multi-colored dumbell-suckers. Of course, all of us remember the rich, blue-colored programs with the gilt bulldog heads, if only by reason of the blue strains which our hands and clothes still bear. We must not let ourselves forget the Sonnes-Harry Power Test which we took for three hours one morning during our career as 12A’s. Duncan Lamont rose supreme among the intelligentia by coming out first in the high scores. In the Ohio State Educational Department Test, Duncan Lamont, James McKinney, and Tony Debeljak won honorable mention. As we proceeded with the business of being 12A’s, our president appointed more committees, among which were the Prom Committee with Miss Lucile Patterson and Mr. A. H. Ford as sponsors and Frank Naisby, chairman; the Annual Committee with Mr. J. Morley Nutting as sponsor and Florence Rothenberg, chairman; the Class Night Committee with Mr. H. J. McStay and Miss Ethel Wilson as sponsors and John Herman, chairman. The Girls’ Dress Committee was sponsored by Miss Patterson with Marjory Newman, chairman; the Boys’ Dress Committee was sponsored by Mr. McStay with Hudson Fowler, chairman; and Class Picnic Committee with Mrs. Olive Dunham as sponsor and Grace Jones, chairman. The activities of these committees began immediately and results were shown before long. The first big result” was our Prom, which took place May 22, 1930, in the cafeteria. Earl Linsz was toastmaster and speakers were Principal F. P. Whitney, who with Mrs. Whitney was guest-of-honor; Mr. Hunter; Frank Naisby; and Philip Hintz. The cafeteria and tables were decorated with our class colors, blue and gold, as were the programs. Needless to say, the Prom was a huge success—conspicuous by the fact that it had the largest attendance (190) of any other single class affair at Collinwood. At one of the class meetings which were held during the third period on Thursdays, we selected our class speakers for Commencement. They were Norman Burk-hardt, Florence Rothenberg, and John Raymond. Thereafter until Commencement, these students were in a frenzy of speech-preparing on the subject “Music.” Commencement soloists were Christine Frazier, Angie Mancini, and Frank Naisby. In the meantime, Class Night and Commencement rehearsals w-ere keeping us busy. We were sorry to hear of the illness of Mr. Guy Hague, who was to have coached us. The sponsors of the committee, Miss Wilson and Mr. McStay, with the invaluable aid of the chairman, John Herman, and Isabelle Hemphill and several other students, contrived to make our Class Night on June 6, 1930, Collinwood’s best And even during this flurry of committee activity, the Tenacity” Board was not at leisure. Under the excellent guidance of Mr. Nutting, the detailed research work, the fatiguing mounting of pictures, and all minute tasks connected with these, the production of “Tenacity” was made possible. Two of our classmates, Fern Brindley and Mildred Au Rand, received honor pins. Then, after “millions” of final examinations and last-minute Commencement shopping, we dazedly realized that we were on the stage in the auditorium on the night of June 19, 1930, living the last few minutes of our “natural” school life. We listened to speeches, solos, and announcements, and then sadly arose to the strains of our processional march. We marched across the stage, accepted our diplomas sorrowfully (?)—and—it was over! We were through! And so we blindly entered a strange world — all on our own. Finis Page Twenty-six ■DUIIIIMIttaillli TENACITY Hast Will anti Testament We, the June class of nineteen hundred and thirty, hereby do ordain and establish this, our last will and testament, being of sound mind and weak body. To Principal F. P. Whitney we will and bequeath the difficult sustenance of the school, after our departure on the nineteenth day of June. To Mr. Hunter we leave our “tenacious” temperament, that he may bestow it on another class worthy of such honor. To the class of “31” we devise our undubitable right to run the school as we see fit, along with our dignity, simplicity, and economy. To the coming officious ones Frank Naisby, Fern Brindley, and George Peters bequeath their offices in the Council. To the aspirants to the varsity basketball team we leave the places made vacant by Jack Barrett and A1 Miller. To those desiring to ape Red Grange, Kenneth Field and Bob Stampfel offer their places on the “eleven”. To the executive chair of the 12B class, Philip Hintz leaves his “heart to resolve, his head to contrive, and his hands to execute.” To William Novinc, the treasurer of the next graduating class, Earl Linsz bequeaths his philosophy that “money talks but often merely remarks, ‘goodbye’.” John Raymond allows his ability to lead cheers and argue to anyone capable of doing the same. We bequeath our successful project of the hall-guard system to any class that thinks it can demand more passes than ours has. And in turn, to the few fearless ones, wrho would endanger their lives by being passless, Florence Rothenberg bequeaths her divine right in the halls. We bemoan the fact that we must leave the alcove empty of “tenacious” lawbreakers, but will it to the next victims of Mr. Gudikunst. To those seeking fame over the footlights Christine Frazier and Isabel Hemphill bequeath all missing cues, tops to cream jars, lost chords, and old dancing slippers. Maude and Tony bequeath their—but alas we cannot hear what it is, for they have parted at the door of 274. Charles Brenner wills his list of nicknames to be distributed to those present at the reading of the will. To those leading in scholarship Mildred Au Rand bequeaths her knowledge of French and Latin. There will be more than enough to supply the entire high school. To the future short-story editor of the “Tower” Virginia Jewell bequeaths her aptitude to write and collect stories. To the anemic underclassmen we bequeath the illustrious example of potential manhood, namely, Karl Kleinberg and his “feats of strength.” Dan Gardner bequeaths his seat in the lunchroom to any three 12B’s (human) who can successfully pass the course in post-graduate lunch. Elinore Brookhart wills her six thousand miles of chewing gum to be used for a benefit class in jaw exercise and to be distributed to those enrolling at the time the class is assembled. James Wylie bequeaths the atmosphere around the ceiling to be breathed by anyone industrious enough to carry a step-ladder. To anyone looking for his future in music Marie Ross and Jean Rulon bequeath their pianistic talent. We, the undersigned, request that this, our last will and testament, have a public hearing on the forty-fifth day of Sol in the year of our Lord, three thousand nine hundred and thirty. ISA Class.
